Uniteds summer activity

You lot wouldn't sell Welbeck if a 14m offer came in?

£14m is the kind of borderline price for me that I would consider. Certainly not an instant "yes!" but nor a straight refusal - I think we need to wait until the end of the season before being sure either way.

As for Young, for a start im not convinced that another winger is our priority. Young wouldnt be cheap, even with his contract starting to run out - there will be other teams interested (i can see Spurs being involved) and his wage demands will probably be pretty hefty. Cleverley can play wide, and I would rather see a combination of him, Bebe, Obertan, Park, Giggs and even the Twins providing our cover on the wings.
Our priorities have to be GK and a central midfielder - neither of which we can afford to skimp out on.

Fair play then, like I said I don't think he's a bad player. I just see most of our players have a role and can only see him as a (great) backup for Valencia/Nani. I edited my previous post regarding Park:

/edit: Park isn't a better winger no, but he does bring something to the team that Nani/Valencia don't. His energy and relentlessness often help us in the big games, whereas I can't see Young being anything but a slightly worse Valencia or Nani.

Dont get me wrong on Park, hes definitely got a role to play, in my view hes better off central but ive never rated him as a high quality winger, he simply isnt, he dosnt have the attributes to be one, what he does is provide a very disciplined option in certain games, and for that alone hes worth a place in the squad.

Next season will probably be Giggs's last, in an ideal world wed probably sign Young next summer, but its not an ideal world, we have a chance to sign a very good player for realitvely very little money in todays market and replace the position of a key squad player in the process, hence why im all for signing Young.

You make a good argument there. I think it would depend on prices and wages for me. I wouldnt spend any more than about £15m on Young. If we can get him on the cheap, he would certainly be good value, and would mean we are less reliant on Giggs, but we do have plenty of young players coming through on the wings - if we sign Young I would assume that at very least one of Bebe/Obertan would be let go.

Without meaning to sound harsh that wouldn't be a bad thing in my opinion! id give Bebe more time as hes clearly still VERY raw but Obertans never looked a United player to me, from day 1 i said he looked like a left footed version of Bellion, nothings changed my view.

As for Youngs price, i doubt it will even be 15 mil to be honest, hes only got 1 year left on his contract, lots of stories about the deal being around the 12 million mark, which, in todays climate, for his level of player is a steal in my book.

I can't see him being less than around £15m and he currently earns c. £70,000 a week and has allegedly been offered a big pay rise to stay. Can't see him moving for less than £4.5m a year. Not exactly little money, but maybe in today's market that is a bargain.

Well you must remember this is the market where James Milner went for 27 million, Andy Carroll 35! anything 15 million or below for Young is a steal in todays game, you have to move with the times, the days of getting a world class player for 20 million are long gone, today 20 million gets you Gareth Barry.......

True, wouldn't it be brilliant if we just went out and got another version of Hernandez in central midfield/wing. Buy of the season.

It would indeed, but for every Hernandez theres an Obertan/Bebe, id rather spend a little bit more and know what your getting than risk an unknown potential gem not working out.

Javier Hernandez's are very thin on the ground.

Someone id like us to look at would be Ever Banega of Valencia, watched him a lot this season and he looks class, wouldnt cost the earth either i dont think.

Im not convinced - when you take PL experience etc into account - that Banega would be that much better than Young, but would probably cost significantly more.

Obertan is right footed.

Milner wasn't 27 million and Barry was nowhere near 20 million.

I said this in the other thread I would loan Welbeck back or to another PL team so he can have another year experience under his belt. I cant see him benefiting being 4th choice here at his age he needs to play.

With Young a proven PL player at around 12mil would be a steal I just look the way he plays with better players at England over the last month or so he looks good at that level so I think he would improve at United.

imo Young is as good if not better than both Nani and Valencia were before they joined United and he'd fit in perfectly with our wide and fast attacking style. Fergie creates world class players from those he purchases; United teaches players to play for United.

Young will be 26 in the summer. Nani was 20 when we bought him and Valencia was 23. They were players young enough to be moulded into quality wingers. Young is a decent winger with neat technique, but he is not special like Nani, nor is he the powerful and consistent figure that Valencia is.
He's only 20 ffs. Just because you personally can't see potential, doesn't mean Premier League football managers can't; why does that fact annoy you?

I am an excellent judge of talent. Rodwell has not done enough to warrant the hype surrounding him. His development has stalled, and he is not worth the £25m fee suggested.

Ashley Young's a proper footballer, the type of player that typifies United's wingplay over the years, and long may that continue

You lot wouldn't sell Welbeck if a 14m offer came in?

Yes, let us sell a homegrown 20 year-old talent who is among the most promising of his age to sign an average Premier League winger for even more money. This does not make sense.

Welbeck is a fantastic talent. If he was not a United player, there would be threads with posters salivating over the prospect of signing him for a lot of money.

No. Why the hell would we sell a homegrown young talent with fantastic prospects for the future?

Why the hell are people so obsessed with getting money for our players?!

Speaking of Obertan, where the hell is he? Is he injured?

Nope, played and scored for the reserves in midweek... I think Fergie has lost trust, at least for now. Starting Fabio and Rafael on the wings against Arsenal spoke volumes.

lets assume that these rumours being talked about where we do a swap with nani for schneider are true (yes, yes, bullshit i know but just for the sake of debate).

would you take that swap?

No point we'd be back square one in missing a key player. Before we had wingers and were missing a creative midfielder, after that swap, we'd have a creative midfielder and be missing a winger.

Bernd Schneider is 37 years old and has been retired 2 years, I'd hardly give away our best player for him.

I read on another forum that van der Sar's successor - our new goalkeeper - will be in the stands tonight watching the match.

Don't kill me, if it doesn't come off, but that fella is usually pretty reliable.
