United to sign Lukaku??

I agree with your general point but I don't want us buying more players who are dreaming of playing elsewhere, we have 3 young strikers to develop already and I'd rather we focused on them.

I think he'd be a great buy. In my opinion, he is a vast improvement on two of our young strikers, and he is a player who offers something completely different, something that we don't have. With him being so young also, if we bought him we'd be likely to make more or less what we paid for him if we sold him.

I wouldn't write off Mame just yet, so that makes 4. Then there's King, Cofie and Keane, who, while perhaps too young to be part of the equation just yet, are superb prospects all the same. Lukaku is obviously an exceptional talent, but the money would be better spent on other positions in my opinion.

I wouldn't be surprised if United were interested in this kid, as are most clubs in europe. Not many 17 year olds make that sort of impact so quickly at the top level. Any move for a player like that would likely be to beat another top club to him. I doubt any amount of decent kids in the reserves would stop that if United decided they needed to move for him.

I don't know why people place so much emphasis on daft articles, probably misquoted and translated umpteen times. This kid is 17 and just that, a kid. How many 17 year olds wouldn't want to play for Real Madrid, or United, Barca, Chelsea or Inter for that matter?

If united wanted him then he'd have the decision on any move. Besides, you can't buy a player and ask him to commit for his whole career. Some players like a new challenge - its no reason not to sign them in the first place.

I'm laughing hard when I read some of the stuff in this thread. It's not his 'dream' to play for Real Madrid. It was more like: "How would playing in Santiago Bernabeu be like?" A: "Like a dream". He would have said the same if the question was about Old Trafford or Stamford Bridge. In Belgium there were even articles on various footballnews websites about the fact that marca had several pages about Lukaku, and that lots of it was left out (e.g.: the fact that he won't leave Anderlecht untill he finishes school) and lots of quotes were 'air' or completely out of context.

Anyway, Lukaku is like the most down to earth and genuine guy you could meet in football. He's very smart about planning his carreer and how he can get the most out of it (and I'm not talking about money) and everything he says en does confirms this. Recent example that springs to mind about him being down to earth: When asked in an interview if 2010 was the year of Romelu Lukaku, he immediately replied it was the year of Anderlecht. And you can just tell it's genuine when he says it.

Another important factor in this whole story is Lukaku's father. He's a former pro and he knows what goes on in that world and he protects Romelu as much as he can. He'll be an important factor in Lukaku's choices in the near future, and that's something positive, as it's all about the development of his son's skills and money won't be the main factor. That reminds of another thing that was in the Belgian press last week: In an interview with father Lukaku, he said that Romelu doesn't want to hear about which clubs have called him regarding Romelu. When Romelu was 13, his dad said that a big club called for him, and Romelu didn't want to hear about it, and said he doesn't want to hear about that from then on.

To conclude, there's little to no chance Lukaku will leave Anderlecht in January and I'd put good money on it. It's also still well known and true that Lukaku's a fan of Chelsea and Drogba (that didn't suddenly change because Marca has an article with ridiculous quotes in it about Lukaku), and that's still the club I'd put my money on for him to join when he leaves Anderlecht although I'd prefer to see him at Old Trafford.

Here's an article with actual quotes from a press conference from a week ago with Romelu himself, which is also a source for some of the things I posted (It's in dutch though):

www.jupilerproleague.be: Lukaku: 'Verlaat Anderlecht niet in januari'

Won't leave until he finishes school, what school would that be? I'm not Belgian and I know the school system over here is way different then elsewhere so what, he's gonna finish it this June or?

Chelsea better play the Drogba card as soon as they can. No hurry though as I'm sure he has two years left in him.

I admire him planning his career like that and wanting to finish school but that can backfire with some bad luck. Maybe not on the scale of his talent but for many I can. I personally know a guy who rejected Rangers for the same reason. He's very gifted and is still very good but before last season he left his home team to join another team who then went on to win the league for the first time and were massively scouted because their team is basically made up of 18-23 year olds. He got injured before the season started and not only missed that season but also the success of our U-21 squad which he would be a part of. Now he's got some work to do and maybe has to spend one more year on this island.

Yes. At least if he doesn't fail, which he probably won't, he'll finish school in June.

Even though they are more direct rivals I'd prefer to see him go to Chelsea than Real - where inevitably his progress would be hampered

Don't every club want the best price for their players, does that rule us out of all future transfers then
