United States, Mexico and Canada to host 2026 World Cup

Absolutely awful to see. Weird that you seem almost gleeful about it mind.
So you are assuming that I am gleeful based on this post? Congratulations on your wrong assessment.
I specifically asked a question to see the forum takes on it, specially for the vocal posters in the past WC. Selective morality should be challenged.

He's here to point out the "hypocrisy" of "the West" in having criticized Qatar, which of course doesn't take into consideration the rest of the criticisms of Qatar that were unrelated to migrants.

Last 3 world cups should have been boycotted, not sure about SA, don't remember what issues there were there

So no, we take these people to task instead

I don't think you'd find many people endorsing what's happened there, would you? Even given that, do you not see the difference between that and the wide range of things people were knocking Qatar for?

A country like the USA should not hold a prestigious event as the WC. The suffering they cause around the world for hundreds of millions is far more than whatever evil Qatar can think of. It is not only migrant workers.

That is not what I was asking. I asked are they going to boycott the WC?
What wide range of things knocking Qatar for that the USA have not done 100k times worse? Invading countries? bombing children in their beds?

The US has already successfully hosted a WC by itself, as have Mexico. Democratic nations are precisely who should be hosting world cups, not religious autocracies like Qatar.

You must be joking . Israel too is a democracy, I bet you would be rooting for them to host the WC.

War raging, country invading, children killing countries SHOULD not host a prestigious event.

Israel isn't getting a WC though so its a moot point. The only prerequisite isn't being a Democracy of course. Its a combination of that and having the infrastructure, ideally having previously proven it has the resources to successfully hot a major event (as in a WC or numerous Olympics). This is of course not a US WC - its shared among three nations as a North American bid.

Qatar have zero military power so I'm not sure how you'd expect them to invade other countries or bomb children in beds? Qatar do, however, have stoneage attitudes towards women's rights and the LGBTQ+ community. But you've already proved again and again that their interests aren't of interest to you. What you want to focus on is autocratic states not being criticized.

He's ok with autocracy as long as it showcases the region and its highly evolved religious customs before a global audience.

No, I do not care for that, In fact autocratic states should be criticized rightfuly just like the war raging countries like the UK and the US. But the harm is done by these mini states is microscopic compared to what the UK and US. How are they allowed to host prestigious events? According to the poster above the USA will host it because they are a "democracy" and hosted one the worse WCs ever existed. A state with no football heritage where they do not call it football in the first place. If Qatar is to be criticized and boycotted so does the worse countries. I would expect the admin above to defend the WC in the states because he is an American and his take on the subject will be somehow biased, but I expect the neutrals to take another stand.

Democracy v Autocracy - The differences between the two aren't particularly hard to distinguish. Criticisms of Russian and Qatar were conspicuously absent among the recently vocal US shouldn't host a WC brigade. Not withstanding the fact that its actually not even a US WC.

No whataboutery please. Discuss the criticisms of the US as a WC host. What other countries have done in the past is not relevant. Thanks.

I was at USA 94 and thought it was pulled off pretty well given (at the time) a lack of interest in the sport by Americans. That has obviously changed now with the Premier League and other leagues constant on TV as as well as the evolution of MLS. I would expect this one to be the biggest sport tournament in history given the location and the fact that North American fans will turn up in big numbers along side Europeans and South Americans.

Just hope everyone makes it out alive. That would be a success in and of itself.

I think it's because you go straight to advocating a boycott, somehow conflating the US with Canada and Mexico. Even given your anti-US views, why would you boycott a World Cup in the latter two countries?

I never said I will boycott it. Not even in the US did I say I will boycott. I am not anti US, I am anti war. I was asking who are goint to boycott this one, because everytime it was brought up in the Qatar thread, the theme was "create a separate thread for it and it will be rightfully discussed".

War raging countries? You do realize that most countries in the world have their current borders due to some kind of war in the past? How long does it take for a war raging country to become a peaceful one?

As for having no football heritage, at least USA had previously qualified for WCs before they hosted it unlike Qatar.

You're not anti war, you're pro Qatar/the ME. Nothing wrong with that but just own it.

I mean, he obviously refers to the US wars in Afghanistan and Iraq which are still "recent" wars.

I presume he also refers to US involvement in all kinds of coups and interventions worldwide.

Which World Cup was this?

You are trying hard to paint me as "pro Qatar" despite me in multiple times criticizing them saying they are a backward state, but whatever, you can think whatever you want.
But how do you know that I am not anti war? I witnessed multiple wars, lost friends and family because of it. Family and friends scattered all over the globe because of it. I know what war is.

You do know there are wars are still ongoing or very recent, do you?

You are literally the first poster in this thread since the bump to reference the last world cup. Maybe you should try taking your own advice and restrict discussion to this world cup.
Yes, I bumped it with report and a question about this WC.

Fair enough. Apologies, saying you aren't anti war was silly.

Fair enough. I just think boycotting sports events that have multiple host nations could end up becoming an unfocused mess and do very little to confront human rights abuses. If there was a boycott of the 2026 World Cup, would it include Canada and Mexico? And speaking of which, is there a blameless country on earth (Canada's residential schools were a blight on our nation)?
