Manchester United have made a firm move for Atletico Madrid goalkeeper David De Gea.

The Sunday Mirror says United have already opened talks with Atletico Madrid over an £18m move for De Gea.

United are on the look out for a new goalkeeper with Edwin van der Sar's, 40, career drawing to a close.

Sir Alex Ferguson has identified De Gea as the man to succeed the Dutchman.

From News of the World, doubt there'll be a real quote.

Found is these old quotes from De Gea himself

'All I know is what Atletico have told me - there has been contact between the two clubs,' he said. 'I believe now is not the time to move. I was about to go to Wigan last summer but I wanted to remain at Atletico and take my opportunity another time.

'The Premier League would be enjoyable for any player and it is an option I would like a bit later on in my life.

'I won’t rule anything out but at the moment, my head is focused on Atletico. For me, Van der Sar has been one of the best in the world in recent years.'

I still think we are wasting valuable money on a keeper, when Tomasz Kuszczak is as good as most keepers out there. Very rarely has he let us down and deserves his chance to step up as the number one choice.

I know what you mean but I don't necessarily agree with the bolded bit. TK is a good solid GK, no doubt and I'd much rather have him then Almunia and most other average to good GK's but the thing with being at United is that as a GK you need to be a bit better then "decent or good". You need to have that confidence factor which you instill in the backline, your distribution needs to be tops and TK just doesn't tick many of those boxes for me.

Maybe you're right and when given an extended run in the team, he might prove the doubters wrong but for me he is a great shot stopper but just a pretty good GK - nothing really special.

I hope we can come to some sort of agreement with De Gea/Atletico, even if it means getting first option on him or buying him and loaning him back to Atletico for another season - if VdS does not retire this season. (and De Gea sounds like he would prefer to remain at Atletico and develop a bit more).

I've only watched him about 6-7 times but for a 19 year old (he is 19, right?) he looks amazing. Reminded me of Casillas when he first started at Real and looks a bit like VdS

Luckily for us, Real is stocked in the GK department for the next 5-10 years, so we wont have to worry about feeding them another top player ;)

Failed to stop a very saveable shot last night which cost Athletic 2 points. Of course it wasn't his fault entirely that Madrid didn't win but it's mistakes like that shows how reliable (or unreliable) they are which instills (or *insert opposite word for instill here*) belief in the back 4. But I guess he's still very young....

He's very good, at £18m I obviously don't want him but he'd probably cost closer to £10m if Wigan could make a bid for him.

He's extremely young for a goal keeper, established himself for a top side and then when you add the United tax, I could easily see us having to fork out around £18 mill. You also have to consider the weakness of the pound at the moment too.

Yeah, but there's a risk the he won't make it just like a dozen of goalkeepers didn't here, that's why I cannot see us spending £18m on a goalkeeper when we could get someone talented on the cheap and try him out for a season or two. Besides, an £18m price tag would put way too much pressure on the lad.

Wigan bid for him before he'd played a game for Atletico's first team, though.

I would love it if we bought a young goalkeeper who was good enough. Just knowing that for 10 years we don't need to look for what could be argued is the most important part of the team would be amazing.

I hope we sign him just for the headlines. "Gea lords it over..........", etc.

I'd be more surprised if we weren't talking to Atletico about De Gea. That doesn't mean he's the only keeper we're looking at, but he's certainly one that we should be looking at.

The best young keeper I've seen since Casillas first appeared. With a young player, it'll be as much about his personality as his talent - with any luck United are finding out what they need to know.

Just don't pronounce his name with a geordie accent.

Watching the Atletico match yesterday on Sky the co hosts were saying United had put in a bid...

I have never seen him play before. But 18m seems steep for a gamble on a young goalkeeper.

How about 15m on Buffon rather?

Q: What do Sir Alex Ferguson and Steve Jobs have in common?

A: Neither of them give a feck about Windows.

If he is as good as some of the Caftards claim, 18m will look like a steal in 3-4 years

I'd still rather Tomasz Kuszczak was given a well deserved long run as first choice keeper. The money not spent on another keeper can be used on the more urgent replacement for Scholes.

Personally i hope Fergie can persuade Edwin to do one more year if he's feeling good enough to carry on. Then we can observe De Gea more as well before splashing the cash.

After the debacle of trying to replace Schmeichel last time, I think its imperative we get a fantastic keeper who can replace VDS. It will no doubt be tough and might cost a bit of money, but the goalkeeper position can easily save you around 15 points per season (not to mention get attacks going with the right distribution)

For me, he simply is not good enough.

He has terrible command of the area, is poor on crosses and his distribution is very poor.

he is a very good shotstopper, but then he is a keeper, if he wasn't you'd have to question his clasification to begin with.

Kuszczak is, imo, a very good backup, but certainly not a player I would want to see given the faith of the number 1 spot when VDS retires. If he was, it would be like us having Carroll in goal again, or like Arsenal with Almunia - Kuszczak simply isn't good enough for what United need.

Why on earth would you want to waste 15m on a Buffon who's forever injured and not playing anywhere close to his older level?

He misses atleast 3-4 months every season. That's the keeper you want? The only one happy with that signing would be PIG

This.

Ive never been a Buffon fan. Undoubtedly a fantastic shot stopper but I wouldnt fancy him to handle Stoke/Bolton away with a barrage of balls into the box. Flapper.

The keeper's position had always been very sensitive position for United. PIG is a great shotstopper but he is crap on crosses.

How does Gea compare to Hart for those that have seen him?

If they are at a similar level then go for it, as i'd be happy to see us splash £18m on Hart (not that it would happen.)

Quite similar imo. De Gea is a very down to earth chap by all accounts. Hart strikes me as a similar character. Im not 100% convinced hes ready to take over. Maybe VDS will give us another season which would help bed him in.

Piatti's goal last night was probably only the 2nd mistake Ive seen him make in 18 months and even at that Im probably being harsh on him.

Its a risk, a big one at that , putting all our eggs in one basket keeper wise. If Kuszczak isnt prepared to hang around and VDS does retire I think we need to buy someone with proven premiership experience aswell.....

What are our other options except for the De Gay lad? I recall rumours about interest in Neuer. Any other candidates?
