United need to sign some Spanish players

Well yes, you can. It won't be exactly the same but the ethos at Swansea for several years has been to build from the back and keep possession. To hear Rodgers talk it's as if he transformed them from playing Stoke. He hasn't.

I'm not saying he's not done a good job. He has. What he hasn't done is revolutionised the way Swansea played their football.

Well he has certainly revolutionised the effectiveness of it, and for that i give him full credit. The players obviously have more belief in Rodgers principles and the way he implements them, than those of the previous coaches.

So we may have to agree to disagree on this point. I do not feel a general club principle can have too much bearing on the specific job Rodgers has done, with what he has had available. Swansea may have played some nice football beforehand with an emphasis on possession, but making it effective enough to start getting consistently positive results requires a belief and a spirit that can only be accredited to the manager.

That is the difference between achieving and not . Belief. It is the hardest thing for any manager to achieve and Rodgers has done it to the point where his team's performances are regularly exceeding the sum of their parts. That is as all you can hope for at this stage.

Maybe in the summer when a few of his players are plucked by other clubs, we will see how the manager copes then, if he is not headhunted himself of course! But for now at least personally i think he has done a brilliant job with Swansea, at present they have repeatedly shown an impressive balance of intelligent and fluent attacking and disciplined defending.

Surely that is the goal of any manager, i can only give full credit to Rodgers for significantly improving upon whatever he inherited.

We've been already linked with Martinez, Suseata, Llorente, Munain and now this guy from Bilbao. Guess we'll buy the whole lot of them.

Haven't we been linked with more or less half the Athletic Bilbao side, since their knocked us out..

Ridiculous..

The calmness & composure the Spanish players have to go with their rich technical ability is unparalleled. United need to go Spanish, sooner rather then later.

I think we already have a few technically gifted young players in the squad like Cleverly, Jones, Smalling, so adding a few classy young Spanish lads would help us adopt a more composed playing style.

Maybe they would convince someone that it isn't a great idea to swan off to Las Vegas just before a tournament.

Are you seriously suggesting that the likes of Cleverley, Jones & Smalling are on the same level technically as say Martinez, Alba, Muniain, Navas, etc.?

I don't think he is. I think he means that a lot of the trouble with the premiership is playing with patience. A few spanish players would maybe make our young lads think about how they play. A lot have good skill but are in such a hurry they give the ball away. Some more shorter passes instead of trying to ping 50yd passes that don't come off.

Rather than realise that in general english coaching from grass roots youth football upwards is wank, lets sign some spanish players....yay thats not short term at all. They wont dissapear back to Spain the first time it rains, or when Real/Barca come calling, or when English cloggers kick lumps out of them A la Reyes.

If you really think emulating the Spanish is the way to go then English fotball needs to be rebuilt from the ground up. Youth coaches that dont pick the biggest strongest lads everytime over smaller skillfull players, removing tired old hacks like Gareth Southgate and trevor brooking from Developmental positions and bringing in people who have lived the football philosophy that you are trying to build, like Yohan Cruyff for example.

sack fergie, sign guardiola to a 20 year deal and make him bring his whole backroom staff over?

I believe that we made serious bids for Vicente, Ramos, David Silva and Jordi Alba in recent years so I think that the desire is there but non of those deals ever came to fruition.

Bugger me I missed the part where Fergie was made head of youth development for the FA and changed his name to TREVOR BROOKING.

Anyway, my post was aimed at those who want to emulate the Spanish.....I dont. This mindset is exactly what is wrong with britain today, we dont innovate anymore, its all lets play footy like the Spanish, lets replace our culture with, and I use the term very loosely, American Culture, lets dress like the x y or z. We have become a country of imposters.

Like the nothing bids we made for David Villa, Benzema, Nasri, Hazard, etc.!

Exactly yeah. You think that every player that we have tried to sign has come off and that all the aforementioned bids were just media speculation and smokescreens orchestrated by the master transfer pimpernel that is SAF?

Yet you are the one who wants to change our idiosyncratic and endearing style of football.

I like the English style and I will continue to.

We should buy that boy Alba

De Gea's off next year then is he?

That's not so unlikely. I always figured the downside to signing De Gea was that as soon as he reaches his potential he'll be on the first plane back home.

Then again, Liverpool have managed to keep Reina for seven barren years.

3 of the 4 scorers in the final were PL players but after silva got subbed off until torres came on later, there were no PL players on the pitch. All in all 3PL players in the final played a total of 90 mins combined. Really shocked me.major final and so little representation. We ought to look at some of those lads from both italy and spain. Great technical players

reina seems like he would only move back for the RM and Barca job and being close to age with valdes and casillas, it looks like he won't go back to spain.

De Gea is the perfect age to develop here until he is 26 then go off the barca or madrid (i know he was atleti youth but not sure how strong he feels about it) just as valdes and casillas are hanging up their boots

Reina is a culé, so RM would never be in the cards...De Gea, being from Atletic, would also find it difficult to go to the crosstown rivals...There are exceptions to the Barça vs RM hegemony on talent, Atletic & Basque players are definitely part of that

The only danger for a player like De Gea is that with the depth of goalkeeping talent in Spain (Asenjo, Robles, Marino, Diego Garcia), he could see others move ahead of him for NT play...That's the only thing I could see pulling him to come back to Spain

do you ealy think they are better than de gea?

de gea has been immense for his age, and will only get better. he already has trophies under his belt as well.

De gea is nailed on spanish number 1, as soon as casillas retires IMO.

I wont be surprised if De Gea ends up to either Barca or Real. He's Spanish after all + Spanish clubs tend to give better salary then us. However its not as clear cut as we may think. Barca/Real or someone else's academy may produce a promising keeper at par/better then De Gea. Whatever happens De Gea has a huge resale value so if we can get 20m+ profit it would be worth the effort. Spain's football style represents the present/future so I dont mind if we can get 1-2 players from there. For all we now a Martinez/Herrera may have the same impact on our team as Cantona had.
