United in this Summer transfer window

Which will make us a laughing stock. United have been bragging about we will pay for the best players and if we can't sign Baines and Fellaini, then what?

Christ, these muppets who are "embarrassed" by United don't know they're born.

If Fellaini and Baines were our transfer target from the beginning then why didn't we try to sign them before preseason started? I don't mind Fellaini but I will be annoyed if we end up paying more than £23m because that would be poor planning on our behalf.

Maybe because they knew there would be fans who would moan about it, so you go out and bid for big names and say you tried to get them. Then when it fails go in for your original targets. I agree, that we should have gone for them straight away and got them bedded in.

And there was me hoping this saga was over weeks ago. We're really incompetent this summer, arent we

I love United and don't want people laughing at us. That's for Arsenal.

Honestly, who cares what other fans think? Arsenal have a tiny squad of players left, hence the panic around them. We're the reigning champions and are trying to add to it. My only issue is that we should have ideally done it weeks ago but it's not embarrassing.

I completely agree with this. But I think if we signed them in June then plenty of fans would have had the whole of preseason to see our new signing in action and by now I bet majority would have warmed to them.

The whole summer was odd.

Seemingly, we put all our eggs in the Fábregas basket but put in bids that were never going to be accepted, right after Barcelona lost one highly promising central midfielder. Since then we've spent weeks doing apparently nothing - unless we were "preparing" this double bid that Everton rejected out of hand.

Also, it's as if no midfielders existed but Fábregas and Fellaini. The strongest rumour of the summer apart from these two was about Garay. And that was bullshit, of course. So what's the strategy here? When Moyes says people are working hard on transfers, what does he mean? I can't imagine a lot of hard work is necessary to put in a 16m bid for Fellaini, a player he knows everything about. Are we scouting other players all the time, doing personality and background checks but keep coming back to Fellaini? Or what?

The Baines bid is weird for another reason: apparently it's the same offer we made back in June which got rejected straightaway. What made the club believe that it would be different this time? They can hardly think that Everton are now desperate to offload Baines...

Baines and Fellaini it is I'm afraid

So, so inevitable but still massively annoying.
Should be aiming higher really. They're both welcome additions but in midfield in particular we need better.

Seems like a fair valuation to me. We're not so desperate for either player that we should bid way over the odds. They are both "nice to have" players.

28 million is probably under the odds. 35 million is probably the minimum Everton would want.

One thing I don't understand is that we reportedly put in a bid of £12m for Baines back in June and two months later we offer the same amount again. Oh Woody.

That's what is puzzling, how hard is it to put a bid in for a player, does it take endless trips to the gym beforehand?

Something better is not going to happen this summer. Fellaini will be a good addition to the squad though. If they get him at a good price, and still habe the money to get a more technical midfielder next time, then fair enough.

Heh, just edited my post with that, before seeing your reply.

Maybe Moyes just wants to boost the numbers there and they know someone better is available next season.

I rather we try and sign Luke Shaw if Evra was to leave. Baines is 28 now so in a few years time we will need to look at another left back to replace him. If we get Shaw in we are sorted with LB for many years to come with Fabio as cover (for both LB and RB)

Bit of a shame really. I personally think our midfield could do with quite a bit of an overhaul.

Like I said, I don't mind the two of them but neither is particularly exciting nor will either take us up a notch or anything. They'll bolster the squad though. Although what's the point of Baines? Evra seems to be back in great form and fabio has tons of potential too. He's always been promising when fit.

Good shout about Shaw.

I'm not sure a 17/18 year old can be ready to be first choice at a club challenging for the league and champions league.

I think Southampton aren't going to let him go this year.

Complete clusterfeck. Genuinely awful first transfer window for Woodward. Moyes can't be attributed with much blame, though I would have hoped he as well would have had better targets than Fellaini lined up. I also assume we all think Moyes is a cnut now after we said the same thing about Rodgers when he signed Allen.

We know they aimed higher. They wanted Fabregas. I doubt they see Fellaini as a replacement for that level of player. I am sure they still want that type of player. Fellaini is a different type. But could give us the physicality we lack sometimes in the PL. I doubt he will improve us in the CL though.

Fellaini would be a decent signing but the Baines bid and timing for these transfers is truly mind boggling. If we really wanted these 2 it should have been done months ago.

Baines is a good player but I'd rather keep Evra and the £15m than sign him, we just don't need a new left back.

I wouldn't blame Moyes for our transfer dealings but could this be a panic buy?

Had a look at Everton forums and many seem very angry at Moyes for trying to sign Baines and Fellaini. How about their own manager signing players from Wigan?

Baines perhaps not as Moyes bid for him a couple of months ago. Fellaini yes, seemingly a lack of alternatives which isn't really good enough for a club like ours. Not quite sure what our scouts have been doing over the past year.

Our scouts have been sat in a room reading the tabloids to find out who we should sign.

Everton got an experienced, versatile international player who is a model pro and had won umpteen league titles and a Champions League from us for 3.5 million.....

They got Gibson who is an international player with great experience and we sold him for 1.5 million.

Were Everton fans embarrassed at that? - I seriously doubt it

This is an opening bid, perhaps slightly on the the low side but an opening bid nonetheless.....

What did Chelsea bid for Rooney? 20 million?! now that was derisory

There's plenty of time, this is an opening bid and we'll come back with an other - its called negotiation.

The most I'd want to pay would be 35 for both - any more and we're paying over the odds IMO

There aren't a lack of alternatives at all, we just weren't interested in any of them.
