The whole summer was odd.
Seemingly, we put all our eggs in the Fábregas basket but put in bids that were never going to be accepted, right after Barcelona lost one highly promising central midfielder. Since then we've spent weeks doing apparently nothing - unless we were "preparing" this double bid that Everton rejected out of hand.
Also, it's as if no midfielders existed but Fábregas and Fellaini. The strongest rumour of the summer apart from these two was about Garay. And that was bullshit, of course. So what's the strategy here? When Moyes says people are working hard on transfers, what does he mean? I can't imagine a lot of hard work is necessary to put in a 16m bid for Fellaini, a player he knows everything about. Are we scouting other players all the time, doing personality and background checks but keep coming back to Fellaini? Or what?
The Baines bid is weird for another reason: apparently it's the same offer we made back in June which got rejected straightaway. What made the club believe that it would be different this time? They can hardly think that Everton are now desperate to offload Baines...
