United in this Summer transfer window

I never said it was. Clearly, Moyes wanted Fabregas but when that fell through, who of similar quality was available? You say that there's a "huge amount" of players that could improve our midfield. So who, out of that huge number, is available and would sign? I can't think of any off the top of my head.

You just want one? Fellaini would improve our midfield. He would at least give us a different type of option. I still believe Fabregas is available if we bid very big.

Do not want fellaini. He is a lazy player I think. Would be very happy to drop some cash for Barkley though.

I can't believe there are people who think our midfield doesn't need at least one signing. Carrick is our only midfielder who could get into another top team and as much as I like him, there'd not be really that many CL contenders that'd have him in their first team. Giggs will be 40 in November and we cannot really consider him a proper option there, Cleverley is an all right player but he doesn't really get close to the high level we should hope to maintain in all positions. Anderson wouldn't even be considered as possibly good enough for United if he were playing for Fulham or Udinese right now.

Carrick has also had a couple of injury free seasons where he played in virtually every game. He's 32 so this could take its toll on him physically and there's no guarantee he'll be able to go through entire season playing in every big game. Our only other player who can fill in the defensive midfield role with some discipline is Phil Jones, a defender we bought for £18m to play as a defender, not use as some luxurious John O'Shea upgrade. Cleverley is also quite injury prone which could leave us with only Giggs and Anderson in midfield for some games - I'd be shocked if we were able to control midfield against anyone with that sort of pairing.

Even buying one midfielder won't suffice IMO. We need someone to cover for and replace Carrick and we need someone of genuine quality to partner him. Maybe it wasn't evident against Swansea and yes, we managed to win the league with this squad but I'd be shocked if another season with this sort of midfield could end with a title. If Carrick goes out for a prolonged period we're going to struggle massively. How a top team can be so short in midfield is shocking but then again you can have a look at Barcelona's defence and they have the exact same problem at centre half.

Another astonishing claim regarding Fellaini. Just when I though I couldn't be surprised any more.

You shouldn't be surprised. The criticism of Fellaini is hilarious and even more so when you consider our midfield options are Cleverley and Anderson.

Maybe it's already been posted in some thread but here are some Moyes quotes from yesterday:

17/08/2013: David Moyes was asked about transfers again at the post-matchpress conference at the Liberty Stadium. The boss replied: "We are hoping to get things done. I couldn't say, yes, there is something on the horizon. I am hoping to get things." When queried if there will be a new signing next week, he confessed: "I don't know. I couldn't tell you about that but, hopefully, we will try and get things moving."

I just cannot fathom it. If someone had said "he is too much of a dirty bastard for me, poor disciplinary record" I could understand a slight reluctance.....but lazy?

Sigh.

He's been saying the same thing all summer. Problem is he has already confirmed there will be signings made....so if there are not....and problems occur due to lack of strengthening (we have 3 recognised central midfielders available) then it's hard for me to take anything he says rather seriously.

So basically not expecting any new signings, happy with the current squad.

If all else fails he will go back for Fellaini at the death, surely we all know this?

The Fabregas deal is dead in the water. Fellaini wouldn't be a bad signing but who would you drop for him? No, I think we'll carry on with what we've got and some of the kids will see more playing time.

Who have we been working on so hard to buy this window? I've heard it been said a lot but surely we didn't just have the one, possibly two midfield targets in Thiago and Fabregas? That seems extremely mental considering our situation. Anderson and Cleverley are not good enough as first team players if we are to compete with Europe's best (and possibly Chelsea/City after their 100 million splurge), and in Anderson's case has had more than enough time to prove otherwise. I know it has been said countless times but a long term injury to Carrick would effectively end our title aspirations. The thought of Anderson/Jones/Cleverley/Giggs rotating the two CM slots fills me with dread. We shouldn't be in this position to be so reliant on a player who is 32 and may well have peaked last season.

It is more or less the same speech from him which is a bit worrying, I get the impression he has passed on his list of targets to Woody to finalise but for whatever reason he has been unable to close.

It's a bit worrying that there seems to be no momentum in the media with regards to us signing any particular player. It's all sort of died down. So either were doing our work quietly and efficiently or we've settle for what we have which IMO would be a daft thing to do.

Baines and Fellaini it is I'm afraid

So, so inevitable but still massively annoying.

Poor planning for Moyes and Woodward to wait until so late in the window to try to get this deal done. It's been ages since the first bid for Baines and had we moved sooner both players could have at least had a good chunk of preseason with us.

Not that I personally want to see either of them here, I just think if they are coming, and it seems inevitable now unfortunately, they could have been settled ages ago had be not been so slow to act.

Everton have rejected £28m joint bid from Manchester United for Marouane Fellaini and Leighton Baines #SSN

I must admit I am a bit surprised. I mean why Baines?

I'm not convinced that Baines is coming here. Fellaini looks like he's coming.

That would make more sense. Trying to sign Baines makes zero sense. I don't personally like Fellaini but if he's coming here then that's that I suppose. I hope he is used as a squad option for the rare games when we need a more robust midfielder rather than a starter.

I don't personally like Fellaini too, but I think he if he comes here then he'll be our second best midfielder and will improve our starting XI.

Don't really get the sense of bidding for Baines unless Paddy is off.

£28m for both. Woodward is a right tight arse.
Seems like a fair valuation to me. We're not so desperate for either player that we should bid way over the odds. They are both "nice to have" players.

Baines, in the eyes of many is the best left back in the league, and certainly one of the most productive. Yes he's getting on, but just because we have Evra making him "nice to have" doesn't affect an independent valuation. Which would be c.£15m

Fellaini reportedly had a buy out clause of £23.5m, and i'd expect Everton to have always rated him at £20m plus.

I'd expect it would take £35m to at least peak Everton's interest, particularly as they are two of Everton's best players!

The Berba transfer day was special.....this summers deadline could rival it, gonna have to bring Fergie out to "talk" with some players.....by talk, I mean kidnap.
