United in this Summer transfer window

I disagree. Acknowledging an issue is the first step to actually sorting it. However its going to be tough to do so. Quality CMs are rare

That may be true for something like a crippling addiction Devilish, but this is football. Unless you are saying United have an addiction to not buying central midfielders. Acknowledging we are short is bleeding obvious, nobody needs to admit to it to begin to solve the problem.

In a certain way you're right. However I think that by stating the obvious Moyes was actually pushing some pressure of his back. If we dont get a CM then it wont be Moyes fault for not being able to identify this issue but it would be the club's fault for not providing him with the necessary tools to win.

There's no doubt this has been a really disappointing summer, but I don't blame Moyes or Woodward. It was always going to be difficult to come in and take over from such a successful regime. I actually blame the previous management for leaving us in a relatively weak position in midfield. It's put real pressure on the new lot to pull a rabbit out of the hat.

I'm not sure I agree fully with those that say Fergie left us in a really strong position for Moyes. We clearly didn't enact our full succession plan, whatever that may have been, because Fergie didn't make his decision to leave until halfway through his last season. I don't blame him for that though - his wife comes first. I'd say the squad Pep inherited at Bayern was the perfect handover. The one Moyes has inherited is pretty good, but riddled with issues throughout.

It's going to be an interesting start to the season - I don't see us faring too well in our opening five games.

That's the spirit.

I'm guessing you're having a pop? You know it's okay not to be rampantly optimistic as a football fan...

I actually share the same concerns as you, but I can see United getting at least 12 to 13 points in those 5 games, but still come up short at the end of the season, for the reasons you have outlined.

all i hear is "United havent bought anyone blah blah blah..its embarrasing etc etc"

Arsenal havent bought anyone yet (barring an Under 20 french player), but have been banging on about how much cash they have to spend. Why is there no threads about them?

Because this is a Manchester United forum, first and foremost?

To be fair, if this is a 'worst case scenario' its not all that bad really.

Indeed; at present it's last season's title winners, minus Scholes (who was injured a lot last season) and of course Sir Alex, but with Zaha and Fabio added, with potentially Lingard, Keane and Januzaj stepping-up. Rooney might sulk the whole season, and Nani might be free to agree a summer move away from January, but Vidic should be back from the start of the season, with Fletcher hopefully playing a larger part as well - so there is a bit of a balance there.

That should be enough to get us competing in the top three in the league, out of a good group in the Champions League, and a couple of rounds deep in the cups.

This is getting tedious. Nothing at all happening...is this how it feels to be an Arsenal fan?

One big riddle, this is slowly becoming...

David Moyes, Paul Scholes and few important United players confident that we gonna add to the squad.

Woodward's actions kept in secret, to the level that it almost looked like he was kidnapped from the airport, indeed.

Just wondering, how much tension will it be on the next manager's press conference. Something, officially must be told to the press, sooner or later, right ?

Oh goody.

Yeah, oh goody.

We're not getting Bale, so that's that. But there are persistent rumors re Ronaldo so let's run with that instead.

Unless you're arguing that Cleverley is shit and should be relegated to the same status as Ando, I really don't see a problem with deploying Cleverley in the same starting XI that features, Ronaldo, RvP, Carrick and either Rooney or Kagawa. There's more than enough talent there in this hypothetical squad to compensate for the less talented Cleverley.

Or, is Cleverley now shit???

I prefer it when it goes all quiet....the quiet before the storm.

I recall a few years ago we would pull a rabbit out of the had and no one had an inclination, remember Stam, Schmeichel, Yorke and recently Hernandez-there was no ITK, twitter and certainly no inside source nonsense.

Hernandez and Stam were out of the blue. So were Ruud (the first time around) and Sheringham. There was also the shock night in which we signed Nani and Anderson. Ronaldo too came as a complete surprise. Yorke, though, was a long saga.

Right! Been away for a week, deliberately avoided news as much as poss..... How many top class players have we (presumably) signed? What's our new look put-fear-of-god into opponents midfield looking like??

(** I'm doing a mental drum roll is piqued anticipation of your replies **)

Signed Fabregas and Fellaini mate. Ronaldo's medical booked in for Monday.

GGMU.

Now that we know Cristiano Ronaldo is definitely returning, do you think other players are going to be more willing to sign with us?

Three weeks ago, on a wednesday (BBC and SKY reporting that Chelsea offered us Mata plus money for Rooney and an hour later Woodward POWER-flies from Australia to Manchester on urgen transfer business) this was, according to may caftards on here, "the most exhilarating and electrifying transfer window ever"... lulz.

I wonder who Moyes was talking about weeks ago when he stated he was trying to bring someone in before the tour.

Question to my interweb stalkers: do you still believe that Barry/McCarthy/Parker/Fellaini sound like a bad idea?

Teams will not want to lose players with little time to buy replacements so late in the window and so close to the start of the season... the above are capable and available. Makes sense to swoop in behind the scenes and be done with this, so we can prepare for the season.

Honestly my fear is that we will end up like City last summer. Won the title and stood still rather than signing quality players to reinforce a title winning side. They were then forced to sign crap players just to make up the numbers.

I think so far we've stood still, and the way the current PL is, that means we've taken a step back.

Does it matter? Despite speculation, he might not have been talking about a specific player. He obviously wanted deals to progress as quickly as possible, it's obviously not come off.

On Twitter Gary Neville said that we have a lot of options in midfield (listing the likes of jones down too) and it has to be someone special to get in, otherwise were better off with things as they are. I completely disagree. There has to be a middle ground between fabregas and Anderson/Cleverley. It's time to, if we can't get a top midfielder in, to get a very good one or two IMO.

Neville's toeing the same line as Robson did back earlier in the window. I agree, it's not what we want to hear. Thing that frustrates me about such comments is that Neville was happy to put the boot into De Gea earlier last season (which visibly annoyed Fergie when it was mentioned at a presser), yet when it comes to a chronic issue for United, he suggests everything's rosy in the garden.

An alternative view could be that we're (via our network of 'ambassadors') playing down our desperation to avoid being fleeced.

I would put it down to him being a united guy toeing the line if it wasn't for the club summer after summer not signing a midfielder and happily accepting what it has.

Neville previously gave the CM issue an explanation - he said Fergie hadn't invested because he was considering how to give some of his young player ample playing time. He suggested that given Rafael is first choice at right back, and that it's hard for the central duo of Rio and Vida to be broken up, someone like Jones needs games in midfield. Buying an established CM would deny Jones the opportunity to develop. I can see the logic, but tbh I'm sick of us having to mend and make do in that area of the pitch.

Neville is a United fan. He's fully aware that we need new additions in CM. His comments are only preemptively trying to quell the mass hysteria if we fail to sign one - which is very possible.

I'd put it also down to that he's England coach too. He'd want Carrick and Cleverley starting as many games as possible.

I also wouldn't mind Fellaini, if we get somebody Creatine alongside him. But Fellaini alone could help us retain the league, but we'd come short in Europe again.
