United aiming to sell Harry Maguire next summer according to Jamie Jackson

Our average defence line height in 2020/21 was 39,2 meters.

Here's the defence line height stats from our recent games.
Wolves- 50.8
Forest-44.5
Burnley(cup)-47.2
Fulham-38.2
Villa(cup)-52.5
Villa-44.5

Okay, so I guess we are both somewhat wrong

Second lowest defensive line in the league is not something ten Hag wants long term

Pep has made abysmal signings before. Having a bottomless checkbook means he can get away with it.

Supposedly wanted Maguire like he supposedly wanted Fred and Sanchez and Ronaldo. Didn't get any though, weird.

Also Grealish, Mendy, Sane, Ake, Danilo, Bravo etc. Pep's a world class coach but a bog standard squad builder.

It's always quietly my only reservation about Pep's credentials as an all time level manager. When you have the freedom to instantly replace a new signing if you don't like what you see, it sort of diminishes your accomplishments as a coach in my eyes. I think many managers could come up with freaky, cool FM style tactics built around dominating the ball and it would come off pretty well if they had an unlimited budget to find the players that fit. Obviously it wouldn't be on his level of success because he's fantastic, but there's a baseline there that basically ensures he'll never "fail" with any significance.

Then he would have promptly binned him off like he does every shit signing he makes. Pep being a fan isn't the compliment you think it is.
Every coach makes shit signings and every coach picks the wrong selections on occasion but if a renowned coach speaks well of a player the way he did I think it is worth noting in the same way that Jose described Alexis as phenomenal when we first acquired him.
Would you rather we do not interview these guys and have no punditry because it seems like their views are worthless in your eyes?

And what am I wrong at exactly in that scenario?

It'll happen its just a matter of time. It's clear ten Hag doesnt rate him as a starter and I don't think he'll accept a rotation role. We can get 25-30M for him I believe.

Needs to be sold and replaced with a younger, more talented option. I cant stand his attitude, some of his comments last year showed he does not have the mentality either

We will pay attention to your opinion over the best coaches in the world in future
Let me know when you get your coaching badges
Yes because I need to have coaching badges to see that Maguire would lose a sprint race to a turtle.

I question if some on here generally just Google their opinions on every subject and use no critical thinking.

There's nothing worse than people who subscribe to the insane view that opinions which differ from theirs are invalid if the opinion-holder isn't a professional authority in that field. "Coaching batches..." goodness gracious. Wonder if he limits his own opinions strictly to what pertains to his profession. I suspect not.

He played the last game to be fair. Probably plays on Tuesday instead.
I think ETH is doing him a massive favour giving him minutes here and there but the moment a decent team comes along or the game has any weight on it he's 5th choice

No real indication he's behind Lindelöf so fourth choice. But yeah, Ten Hag clearly prefers Shaw in the middle with Malacia out wide over Maguire in defence, which is damning.

Regardless of what the harsh United fanbase says if we sell him for as little as 40m we've had our pants down again. Should easily be getting between 50-60m for him. Put him in the Spurs or Newcastle defence and he's instantly improved them (he's better than Dier or Schar)
He might be better than those players but he isn't a significant enough improvement to break those club's transfer records and wage structure. If you think we can get more than 25-30m then you're living in Dreamland.

In this case its only a matter of time until him or Lindelof are out in the summer, and we'll bring another CB instead.

I had a dream last night that the news broke that we had sold Maguire. Very strange thing to dream about as I don't feel like I have many football related dreams, and I'm also not that much of a 'Maguire-out' guy.

It was vivid enough that I had to check the news when I woke up today just to make sure it was a dream.

Bet he thought it would all change when he scored and did the ear cup celeb against them farmer boys for England.

Pep would of course never have brought Maguire to City. He has never signed a CB who even remotely is as immobile or poor on the ball as Maguire is.

I don’t have anything against Maguire. But he does not function well on a team that plays up from the back, and especially not in the PL with teams pressing as hard as they do.

Why do you think Maguire has been ETH 4th-5th choice at CB?

Maguire today is not the same playee he was. His confidence is shot and he looks really insecure on the ball. His ball playing ability was probably the reason why both Conte and Pep wanted him a few years ago;

His importance to United’s possession can be highlighted by the fact that of all central-defenders this season, only Virgil van Dijk completed more touches than Maguire (FBRef). Maguire is also extremely comfortable with the ball at his feet, according to data provided by Wyscout, no central defender completed more progressive runs (105) than him this season.

(…)

«His willingness to step out from the defense is also shown by his impressive progressive carrying distance, where he totaled 8,408 yards this season, more than any other center-half in the Premier League (FBRef).

Looking at data provided by Smarterscout, which uses an advanced algorithm to measure a players playing style, Maguire is rated an outstanding 97 out of 99 in their Dribble Style Ratings category. They define this particular style rating as “moving the ball by advancing it uncontested at least 10% of the length of the field or by taking on a player”.

Not only is Maguire adept with the ball at his feet, but he is also a willing and capable passer. According to WhoScored, amongst all central defenders in the Premier League this season, Maguire ranked 2nd in total passes, and 3rd in accurate long balls.

Even more impressive is the fact that he led all central defenders in Key Passes, with a total of 17.»

In possession, Maguire is a relatively modern central defender. He is calm and composed on the ball, his ball progression statistics are exceptional, and he is an extremely solid passer.»

In the past few years he has been in the 90th percentile for stats like passes completed in the final third, progressive passes etc. And I’m sure that those stats would have been elevated by playing in a team with more focus on that part of the game. To rank that high statistically when playing for that Man Utd-side is impressive.

In terms of lack of mobility, play Laporte alot. Not quicker than Maguire in any way.

With Varane's injury record, I don't see both being sold in the summer at the same time. Maguire is the least sell able of the two.

First thing he did when he come on was give the ball away on that right side.

Needs to go.

Came in here to post this, he doesn't feel anyone with confidence, even De Gea was booting up field instead of passing short to him. Even his teammate now know he's shit he has to go.

It’s terrible but every time you see him warming up, your heart sinks. I can see he’s a functioning CB, but just not for us.
He needs to play for a club that plays a more direct traditional style of football.

He needs to change his attitude. That is his problem. And it seems like he is going through a time time, so ETH sees how he will respond. And so far, not very well

I would rather we sold him in the summer, with Ronaldo gone who will be clearing those long balls in closing stages of the game when we're trying to survive?

Joking aside, we still have McTominay who could probably do a job at CB.

These cup pairings couldnt make ETH's pecking order any more obvious. Varane Martinez. If Varane injured -> Lindelof. If Martinez injured -> Shaw. Only if everyone is injured -> Maguire.

So Maguire is now even further down the pecking order than before the world cup.

He is still behind Casemiro, Scotty and Malacia. HM is in a worst position that AWB.

Those kinds of dreams are fun. Cleaning up without anyone knowing is the challenge.

I think he also delayed playing a pass or a freekick and Ten Hag was visibly gesticulating for him to hurry the feck up.

Im sure the first thing he did was to get his captain’s arm band back

If I was him I’d be cutting that shit out by now. It shows his complete lack of self awareness.

It’s one thing to do it if you’re a captain returning from injury and being on the bench was a one off, but he is quite patently a bench player only now - does he really believe he should still be first choice captain? Bruno must think he’s a pillock.

This guy's subconscious for Director of Football

No matter how much Pep spends they always seem to look a right mess in defence.

Spotted eating round the Villa ground or something.

Also read it on the AV Reddit. If we get money for him, we have no excuse not to get Felix and a RB.

Post fell apart this far in. Pep was in for Maguire.
And how many FBs did Pep buy and bin off? Of course, that won't allow you to write a snarky comeback.
