Unai Emery - Ex-Arsenal Manager

Good video from Tifo Football covering his career up to his time at Sevilla. I found it interesting, anyway.

Tifo always have the best content.

What is this guy doing benching both Ozil and Ramsey. This guy is Europa League standard.

I have a couple of friends that are increasingly convinced he's not the right man and they're usually not the knee-jerk type. Seems more are turning.

He is making them worse. You can argue that managers need time but all he is is a Europa League merchant.

I keep hearing the complaint that he's overly concerned with what the other team is doing, sometimes disregarding his team's strength. A bit like Mourinho in that sense.

I think they are a lot worse than last season and if it hadn’t been for us being laughably sh*te under Jose they wouldn’t be near top 4.

Regardless they shouldn't be losing to BATE Borisov.

It wasn't a weak team filled with youngsters too.
They haven't lost to Bate yet though, it's strictly speaking half time, they'll still go through.

No they lost to BATE and it's not half time.

They're not eliminated by BATE yet which is what you're referring too.

In a two legged game, won over aggregate, not on winning individual games, they have not lost. Maybe pedantic buts it's also the truth.

Christ I'm out of this discussion.

Wenger is a much better manager than him. I find his appointment very underwhelming and meh. Their strong and unbeaten run was probably more down to the change of manager but all in all, I don't think they will achieve anything special under Emery.

I think they will definitely pass this tie anyway, but can't see them winning this competition at all.

If you look at his squad, fifth in the league, with fifty points after 26 games played, is really not that bad. Their team is nowhere near the level of City's or Liverpool's, not as good as Spurs or Chelsea's and United's is better too. And when you take into account that he's trying to implement a whole new philosophy and style of play to what the players and club have just experienced for the past couple of decades, and with minimal backing in the transfer market, then there's even more reason to be sympathetic to his position. It would be a very good achievement if he can get them to finish fourth, or win the Europa League. There's seriously a lot of shite in that team. Honestly, not one of their defenders, including the two goalkeepers, convinces me as a genuinely solid defender. Iwobi is their best wide player. Think about that for a second. Alex Iwobi is the best winger at a side that wants a top four spot. Aside from the two strikers and their central midfielders, Arsenal's squad is painfully average.

That's not true. His style is very similar to Wenger's one.

I'm not so sure. There's some similarities but Emery's approach is far more structured, tactically disciplined and demanding compared to his predecessor. It's not a culture shock on the scale of something like a transition from a Mourinho team to a Klopp team or a Simeone side to a Guardiola side but it's still a significant shift and one which the players will need time to fully adapt to and assimilate.

It’s a two legged tie, contested over two games, of which Arsenal just lost one.

Jesus, now we’re even arguing over what a game of football is. This fecking place.

Don't see that personally. They're still pretty shaky and open defensively to say he wants his team structured and disciplined. Arsenal style this season is still pretty similar to Wenger's one, fun going forward but leaking a lot.

They need transfers, but we all know their board stopped caring about the team a long time ago.

I think that says more about the quality of Arsenal's defence over the past few years than anything else though  it's been a mess for a while, until they make the right signings or get a manager whose first priority will be a solid defence then they're going to have this problem.

Yeah they definitely need a massive overhaul for the defense and midfield, but we all know it's not going to happen under this board.

I said that in the middle of that unbeaten run they had but when I watched them closely they try and press a hell of a lot more under Emery than they did under Wenger, they just don't have the players to truly compete. This Arsenal team is about 3 years too late to the party.

It's not just having poor defenders, even the few decent ones we have -Holding, Bellerin are injured. We're playing a 35 year old lichsteiner in defense. With our first team available we might still have made top four.

Turns out Wenger, while definitely deserving of plenty of criticism, wasn't the main problem with the club after all.

This is quite harsh. It's still Wengers squad who he had been working with for years. Emery has taken over from someone who the club was totally based around and he's not doing any worse.

If I was an Arsenal fan then more than the results I would be interested in looking at if Emery is getting the team playing in a system and whether the bad results are because of individual mistakes or system errors . I don't watch every Arsenal game but so far I have not really seen Arsenal play with a proper system , I don't watch their games and feel that you know what I can get what they are trying to do and they just need better players . The other issue is that in the end the club buying better players is dependent on the manager achieving a certain level with the current players . I think klopp did a great job at Liverpool with that and same with Poch . Arsenal can't buy top players if they don't reach cl and if their highest paid player doesn't play at all

Lichsteiner
Torreira
Leno
Sokratis
Guendouzi
And now also Denis Suarez

That is half of a starting 11, which was brought in under Emery.
Lichtsteiner and Guendouzi aren't starters when everyone's fit and neither is Denis Suarez. But sure, if it fits your agenda then let's call them starters.
It's actually down to your crap board considering your transfers are still trash.
Wenger had majority control over transfers, not the board. He spent 70m on Mustafi and Xhaka ffs. Lacazette cost over 40m. Aubamayeng was 60m or so and now we have to find a way to crowbar two strikers into a one striker formation. Wenger's recruitment in the last few years had been shocking

Your recruitment is still pretty poor mate.

Torreira, Leno, Sokratis and Guendouzi were pretty good recruitments.

For a team with a limited budget, the players brought in under Emery haven't been bad at all. Mostly hits with a couple of misses, which is expected when you're working under financial constraints.

From what (little) I've seen of them, it's been very LVG-esque, but a small bit quicker up top. Lots of slow possession for the sake of possession. Their system seems to not try to get the most out of Aubameyang, though he's still doing very well this season. They've been quite poor but are suffering from a lot of injuries this season tbf - then again, you have to look at the medical team for that, injuries aren't always bad luck
