Unai Emery - Ex-Arsenal Manager

It's hilarious to read all these new excuses from the cultists. 10 months ago we signed Arsenal's best player...

It's really mind boggling. Watford and Everton could finish above us and they'd still come up with something. They make it up as they go along. 3 weeks ago all the players had downed tools and Pogba and player power were ruining the club, then we won Newcastle. .

We're doing alright but that's no excuse to get carried away. Emery was a little unlucky that his first two games were so tough. If we played Chelsea now I'd fancy us to win. City not so much but we'd do better than we did.

We'll be a good indicator of where you're at. Can't wait for that one.

Yep, we hired Moyes because Pep turned us down, not because SAF had already handpicked Moyes. Not to mention hebwas already on his way to City while at Bayern. We went for Klopp when he was not done with Dortmund. Wait, are you now trying to tell me they both turned us down because of this terrible 'structure' of ours while Jose being the martyr that he is was the only one willing to take up daunting and thankless job?

Klopp personally turned Woodward down yes

@fellaini's barber @charlenefan - there are millions of threads discussing the same topic as you two are, no need to take this thread offtopic with Woodward or United stuff. I see no relevance about them in the Emery thread.

Definitely not getting carried away by how well we're playing at the moment, the target for this season was the same at the start of Emery's Reign, Top 4 and a Cup run would be great season, I'm certain no arsenal fan at this moment in time are deluded enough to think we're genuine contenders.

Yup. Getting us back into the top 4 would be a very successful season, with or without a cup. I'm not convinced that we'll make top 4 - its a long season and the competition is fierce - but it will be great if we do. And if we don't, it won't necessarily mean that the season was a bad one. Its not all about short term results at this stage. In the big picture, the most important things are to put a solid organizational structure into place on the footballing side, to hire a manager that could change the complacent culture of the dressing room and get the players used to a more modern tactical system, and to find and/or improve some younger players around which to build a team that might eventually be able to compete for the bigger trophies in future years. Its too early to say that any of those goals have been definitively achieved but all three look good so far. The new footballing hierarchy seems solid, the side is playing with a newfound intensity and a real tactical plan (even if they don't always pull it off), and players like Torreira and Guendouzi look like excellent buys while other young (Iwobi, Bellerin, Smith Rowe, Holding) or youngish (Xhaka) players seem to be thriving so far. Its a long season and a lot can go wrong so I wouldn't take anything for granted. But signs are very positive so far.

We usually beat you lot at home. Its what? One win for Liverpool at the Emirates in a decade? I can't fathom why Arsenal fans are worried/Liverpool fans are confident of a win.

The day we expect a loss against Liverpool at home or consider it lucky to draw..............

No offence or disrespect meant of course. If this game was at Anfield I would be saying the opposite.

As a PSG supporter, i'm pretty impressed by Emery's results. He never really managed to install his playstyle in Paris and sometimes had a tendancy to overstress players on the bench. I think he's the kind of coach that thrives when he doesn't need to prove his worth to his players and have a hard time managing big egoes. Arsenal is a perfect fit for him, there's everything to rebuild there and he knows how to do that. Arsenal is a big historic name and players don't seem to think they're above the institution so the coach doesn't need remind them of this fact constantly. Which is good for Emery because from what we've heard, he caved easily when a couple of players came to his office telling him that it wasn't the way the team was supposed to play.

He made some very weird choices in Paris though, leaving Thiago Silva on the bench and playing Lo Celso as a DM against Real Madrid for exemple. To this day i can't understand what the hell he had in mind. Obviously, it didn't work.

Top 4 getting more and more tight to call with each passing matchweek.

Spurs, Gunners and Chelsea all looking great in phases. United not out of it specially with their squad and them predictably dipping into the market in Jan.

Emery needs to be tested against other top managers to see if he can get points against other top 5 teams. With the goal scorers Arsenal have, it's very likely that they do well.

The last three have been one win for us and two draws. I had a look at the last 10 and it looks like this:

08/09: Arsenal 1-1 Liverpool
09/10: 1-0
10/11: 1-1
11/12: 0-2
12/13: 2-2
13/14: 2-0
14/15: 4-1
15/16: 0-0
16/17: 3-4
17/17: 3-3

Three wins for Arsenal, two for Liverpool and five draws so it's fairly balanced.

I would not be surprised if Floren went after him sooner than later.

He couldn't handle Neymar, I doubt he can handle the egos of a perpetually injured Bale and a soon to be declining Ramos.

I think Emery is meant for clubs like Arsenal throughout his career. He lacks the man-management skills to handle big egos, and the only way he can do it is if he wins a couple of CLs with lesser teams to command respect.

So Neymar is going to Real?

Yes it should be a cracker. Hopefully we'll have a fit left back by then.
Salah's looked like a scared kitten recently so Lichtsteiner might be able to handle him if he's smart.

Apologies, made a mistake in engaging with a Jose excuse machine

Yep I'm totally Jose in aren't I

They say his strength are his ability to adopt/change in football and transmit that to his players during training and his observation during matches and make appropriate changes.

Emery is showing what can be achieved with good coaching and allowing players to express themselves. He has a less talented squad than Mourinho but they look miles better than us.

All of our managers since SAF have been too defensive and negative in their approach. They have also all sulked or been unable to adapt when they didn’t get their top transfer targets.

Emery is making the best of what he has and knows he can’t compete at the top end of the transfer market and it makes a mockery of any excuses for Mourinho.

Can’t compete at the top end of the transfer market?!? Tell that to Pochetinno. Or the managers at the vast majority of the clubs playing in the CL this week.

He won’t be spending money like United or City etc, he will have to make do with a limited budget and target certain players.

People want to believe you can only be successful or progress by buying one expensive player after another and it simply isn’t true.

It certainly helps!

It helps if you buy the right players and have a manager who gets the most out of those players. United over last 5 or 6 seasons are the perfect example of how not to do it.

Arsenal did what we should have done, they replaced Wenger with 2-3 people not 1 (especially when that 1 was Moyes). That is clearly still an issue that needs to be addressed but the coaching and tactics since SAF left have been poor under all 3 managers.

Could it be that the structure about those new managers is better than what we have at MUFC?
Moyes failed (though this was expected).
LVG failed (he got 1 trophy and 4th place in 2 seasons)
Jose is failing (he got 2 trophies and 2nd place in 2 seasons)

Yet, when you look at other teams who hire managers with lesser reputation - they hit the ground running. Even Jose arrived at CFC, got 3rd place, then won the title the next season.
Why are our managers failing?

The much maligned Arsenal's structure is better than ours now?

Some unbelievable posts in here today. Suddenly a club that was a joke until last season has a better structure & squad than us. The length Jose fans would go to 'protect' their god is mind boggling. You guys could give Trump fans a run for their money.

Jeez, I blocked that 4-3 game out of my head. I could have sworn we beat Liverpool more often than not at the Emirates. You guys, City and Spurs generally aren't problematic home games for us. I know we lost twice at home to City back to back but before that City hadn't won at our ground in years.

I guess I was wrong, hope we can make it four wins in a few weeks time.

Really suprised by their start, they have the weakest squad among the Top 6 by a decent margin.

I disagree about that weakest squad thing. They have one of the best attacking squads in the league. Auba, Laca, Ozil, Mhiki..arent exactly fringe players. Any manager would drool at those options.

At Anfield it's similar but three wins for us and two for you instead. Goals are guaranteed:

08/09: Liverpool 4-4 Arsenal
09/10: 1-2
10/11: 1-1
11/12: 1-2
12/13: 0-2

14/15: 2-2
15/16: 3-3
16/17: 3-1
17/18: 4-0

You couldn't make it up, the club whose fans where actually doing street protests a year ago. 90% of AFTV was Arsenal fans moaning about their board, now suddenly better than ours

Is that 3-3 game the one where Pool scored a last minute equalizer because Mertesacker, our captain for goodness sake ducked out of the way?

I've never been more annoyed at an Arsenal captain or CB. Its one thing to be a bit crap, its another to be a complete coward. Every time an Arsenal fan hailed Mertesacker as this great leader and captain I remember that game and shake my head. I think that is part of the reason why we have failed so often. When the going got tough, our so called leaders and best players hid and couldn't rise to the challenge.

Hopefully Emery can purge the squad of that type of mentality.

Mourinho didn't drool at Mkhi and people here didn't either.

Might be the one. Joe Allan scored it following Benteke winning a long ball into your box. Giroud and Firmino both scored lovely goals in that game.

I really hate to admit it but the guy has (so far) done a remarkable job.

I had hoped that it would have been a car crash but to him credit he has done extremely well. You can not argue with the stats.

I just hope that they will hit a brick wall and fall away. Cross fingers.
.

That was a great match, very entertaining although I could have done without the dagger at the end from Allan.

Our defending for your first two goals was wretched. Classic Mignolet howler in there.

It’s only true like 95% of the time. Clubs like Chelsea and City have shown that you absolutely can buy success although United are doing their best to counter that argument. Apart from Leicester which club have won the league in the PL era without being big spenders? Even United with the class of 92 were big spenders and would have been even bigger spenders without them.
