Umaro Embalo

Nope, point still stands that Real paid €45m for a youth player (don't think he played a game at the time) that at 16, could go either way in terms of development.
I think they see it as a risk worth taking, they won't just spend that on any young talented player. They know more about him than we do

Embalo actually scored a hattrick against Vinicius Jrs Brazil side while playing up an age group last year
Really? very interesting i didnt know that

Paying 13m for a 16 year old does seem foolish for two reasons:
  • Given the amount of development that a player of this age will inevitably go through, the 'end product' could either turn out to be a world star or a wasted investment
  • It's sets a financial and ethical precedent that we, as a club, are willing to pay tens of millions for essentially a 'kid'

However, I would pay. In fact, I would outbid any other club that wants him.

This is the age group of players that United should be targeting for the 'young and raw' quota of their transfer budget:
  • He is an adult (by UK law)
  • He is clearly very talented, more so than the typical 16 year old academy player
  • We have no one at that or the older age group that has his skillset or that plays in his position
  • It would set the correct type of precedent: that United will fight for the best young players that we can keep, nurture and, if the correct work is applied by the player, include in our long term plan for the first team
  • It would make the correct type of statement to fans: that youth and development are still key factors in the vision of our club and that we can out-muscle rivals to get to the best young players
During the the last five seasons we have spent huge money on senior players - often on players that have already hit peak age and would not have improved by coming here (Mata, di Maria, Mhiki).

United have a history of keeping faith with and investing in youth.

Time to prove it.

Well yeah, that's what scouts are for, but that's €45m on a 16 year old! No matter how good a scout is you'll never be able to predict an outcome of a player, there are no sure things, so either way you look at it that much money for a youth player is crazy.

His name sounds like something Vick Reeves would say on shooting stars

Off to Leipzig for €15-€20m apparently.

I don't believe it. I'll change my opinion when i see the communication to the Cmvm. Leipzig would be pretty stupid to pay that for a 16 year old. Sporting paid 8 million for Wendell, a brazilian wonderkid that was also on Psg's shortlist. Transfer market world gone mad.

Doubt it, hard to see the club paying 20m for a 16 year old (unless the press are misrepresenting as usual and it only becomes 20m if he becomes the best player in the world).

Must be with a ton of add on clauses if the news is even true.
How reliable is Correio da Manhã

Chump change in the long run. Could be a good investment.

No chance we spend that on an academy player. We already have Gomes and Greenwood of our own and when we can sign the likes of Chong or O'Connor for free or virtually free there is no chance of us spending 20m for a kid to go into the academy.

There’s no logic to this stuff. I’m sure they would have rather have signed him for free like Chong, but if they believe he’s a player who can’t be missed, they would consider spending the money I imagine.

I’d have taken Mbappé at 16 for €20m any day.

I keep getting him muddled up with that guy who plays for Schalke, very similar names.

This isnt just another academy player. If the scouts see the potential in him to be someone like Mbappe in a few years time, then why not take a chance and buy him? The more we have the better for the future.

Embolo? Pretty sure we were linked with him also before he went Schalke.

it would make a lot of sense if Ribalta sees potential in Embalo. If I recall, Real Madrid signed someone from Brazil for more than 40 million.

If he was signed, I doubt he'd be placed in the academy. For that price, I'd imagine he'd be in and around the first team while playing in the reserves for him to get up to speed with the English game.

Ribalta has nothing to do with Real’s transfer policy.

Leipzig almost signed him for 20m until the agent scuppered the deal if I'm not mistaken. He must be a fantastic prospect if teams like Leipzig are willing to shell out so much for a 16 yr old.

Yeah, my point is buying 16 years old for 20m is nothing new, if Real Madrid signs someone for 40m, why can't we? In transfer window, like Mbappe could go on for 160m, just being 2 years older than Embalo.

Real have got fully conned for that 16 year old, he is no where near worth 40m.

He is a legit top player at youth level in fairness.

I agree with you, I think he is a good player. Just wouldn't make sense with the young attacking players we have, it it probably the last position we need more young players in. Saying that, I do love young talented players signing for the club.

Not all of ours will make it here but they will get a good grounding and have a career elsewhere(Drinkwater,Simpson.King etc)..

Gomes and Chong look the most likely, and Greenwood looks to have huge potential. If Embalo has been earmarked as something special then there's every reason to keep track of him

Has he actually played for Benfica’s First team yet?

He hasn't played for their B team yet. He is a sub for their u19s youth league.

I don't see how anyone can justify 20m pounds on a player who hasn't even played for the club's B team. Whether it's us or Leipzig or whoever that buys him.

Benfica B is a professional team in the second division of Portugal. This lad is 16. There's the reason he hasn't played for them.

If he was that good surely he’d have been given the sort of Angel Gomes treatment? A few minute cameos in comfortable games or a cup run out.

Not particularly. Not all managers and teams do the same thing for their youngsters. Maybe the Benfica set up don't think he's ready. In addition to him trying to get out. There was also a rumour about his agent being a dick. There's a lot of reasons why he wouldn't have a game at 16. Skill is only one of them.
