UEFA Champions League - 29/01/25

Now if Milan can equalize and then we freeze the scores please

Sporting just scored and is now in a qualifying position, while Zagreb is out

Rodrygo is a bit underrated, ironically being a lowkey & humble team player who never complains means he gets
overshadowed by Vini who is vocal and flashier.

This new cl format is so much better

So City can still be in it, despite being crap, and thanks largely to playing a Bruge side that had qualified at half time?

If you put all the last group games in the old format on at the same time on the same night it would be great too - except there would be a lot more at stake.

I'm pretty confident even we would have got into the playoff in this CL format.

Nah thats bollocks, a lot more dead rubber nothing games. Old format was beyond stale and crap.

Exactly. Most goals today completely shift the table so that it completely changes who can play who in the playoffs/R16

Is it!?

Fun tonight but every single team you'd expect to go through has despite half of them being awful.
I think so
Take out tonight, we've had many better games to look forward to.

If united were in it I would enjoy it more than a lot of the shitty group games we had (even those we struggled in)

Lille and Villa being through to R16 while Real/Bayern have to play City in the playoffs shows that real surprises are possible.

Nah, in most groups you'd have people fighting out for second place at the very least.

And besides, most of the games tonight are dead rubber? That's why there's loads of goals, there isn't much at stake. Most teams knew they were either play offs or top 8.

This format rewards mediocrity.

Under the old format, City would have drawn Brugge, Feyenoord and Sparta Prague, sleepwalked to first place and a last 16 tie against Brest (or equivalent).

With this, they're in a must win game and could easily play Real, Milan or Bayern in a playoff.

League ranking matters for the seeding. And with 8 matches for 36 teams goal difference matters much more than with 6 matches for 4 teams as before. That's why it makes sense to really go for it and try to score a lot.
