UEFA Champions League - 29/01/25

8 rounds of matches later, all the teams that were expected to go through end up making it through. What an exciting competition.

Pretty much, there was more jeopardy in the old format. Really hard not to go through now for the better teams.

Leverkusen and Aleti gave everything to be in the Top 8 and they can end playing, City, Bayern or Real..

that was shit. watched the goals show on tnt sports and it was good to have so many goals to keep up with, but the lack of any real jeopardy for any of the teams was poo.

I like the new format, but teams that finish 17-24 shouldn't have a second chance. Just proceed to last 16 after the group stage.

The main difference is that the new format is clearly disadvantageous for the teams outside the top 8 so every team must put in 100% for all 8 games versus the old format where teams guaranteed to rank 1st by Matchday 4 will field their B team. Even GD makes a big difference in this format, i.e. Bayern & RM have the same points as us and Atalanta but worse GD and they have a tougher draw potentially v City. In the old format Bayern or RM would've topped their group and breezed through to the last 8 more easily.

Our side of the draw looks quite tough.

How is that? You are certain to avoid Barcelona, Liverpool, PSG and Inter all the way… You may have one tough game in your road to the semis (Bayern, Real or City), but those teams will first battle it with each other before you play them.

In the older draw, a team like City this season, the form they're in, would likely not even have made it through.

It's just luck, because City finished 22. Had they finished 23 then you guys would have to play them.

Well City were 45 minutes away from finishing as low as 25th place, poor campaign from them so far. Sporting have been really bad since Amorim left, 3 defeats in a row in CL (Arsenal, Brugge, Leipzig) and then got a draw at home towards the end vs Bologna who were already knocked out. Leipzig beat them and those are Leipzig's only points in the competition.

3 English teams in top 8.

Probably sounds unlikely especially as they've only finished 15th and they never win it despite everything but I'd back PSG. Feels like they're more of a team now and not bunch of superstars and have improved lately. Enrique already won 1 CL so done it before.

After 6 games City had 8 points. Last season two teams reached R16 with 8 points, two others dropped to the EL. So barely scraping through is exactly fitting here.

Does the fact that 3 English teams automatically qualifying with City with a good chance in the playoff make it very likely England get 5 teams in the Champions League next year?

I don't remember who it was that said we were much better than Brugge, but they should watch what we did today
I don't believe in karma, but your last two matches leave me thinking. Lille had 1.15 xG tonight :o

I guess we have to play City every single year now, starting to get tired of it.

Yes. Also United and Spurs doing well in Europa so far and Chelsea obviously bossing it in Conference. Think England's coefficient is the best.

AS Monaco/Brest vs PSG/Benfica (Liverpool or Barcelona in R16)

Sporting/Brugge vs Atalanta/BvB (Lille or Aston Villa in R16)

Celtic/City vs Real Madrid/Bayern Munich (Atlético Madrid or Leverkusen in R16)

Feyenoord/Juventus vs Milan/PSV (Arsenal or Inter Milan in R16)

Clubs from the same country can face each other.

Wait so it's already determined on positions who will play who in the playoffs? That's so stupid

It seemed certain by the 85th minute that Bayern weren't going to make it into the top 8 and that City would qualify, why didn't they just concede own goals to lower their position to face an easier team?

I wonder if teams will start to strategize who to face given it's so strictly based on position and you can manipulate that.

No, thankfully they finally did away with that nonsense

Yea but now 8 more teams get another chance to stay in the competition when they would've been knocked out before.

Let's not pretend this new format isn't just another way for UEFA to make more money and keep the bigger teams in the competition for longer.

You're preaching to the choir on this one

The point is that it keeps the games exciting even til the final minutes of the final group stage game because teams hovering around 8th see more benefits in scoring more goals to improve their final table standing. The problem with the new format is mostly that it has 10 games before Ro16, but that's due to the higher number of teams.

Both Bayern and Real are more than capable of knocking out this City team. I’d actually make both of them favourites in a match vs City.

This year they would have been favourites even if the second leg were at the Etihad.

We are easier to score against than any of the versions of Pep's City that used to crash out early in the CL because the two-legs ended up as straight shoot-outs (Monaco, Liverpool, Tottenham)

We are also less free-scoring ourselves.

That said, I do fancy us doing Bayern on the counter with Savio, Haaland and Marmoush

We could be playing Milan or Juve in the round of 16. Our potential Quarter Final opponents come from Real, Bayern, City, Atletico, Leverkusen and Celtic.

Liverpool's side of the draw has them with Monaco, Brest, PSG, Benfica in round of 16, and potential Quarter final from Sporting, Atalanta, Dortmund, Club Brugge, Lille and Aston Villa.

I think we come into the side of the draw that has Liverpool or Barca in the semis.

Benefits of finishing 1st or 2nd I suppose.

To a degree, they will. It's already happening in basketball. But it's not that simple because you also have to take the rest of the draw into account. That's the tricky part.

It's all mapped out, all the way to the final, the draw on February 21st, will determine to which bracket each team will end up. From there, everyone will know who they're going to face.

Same with EL and CL. They will all be similar to the draws in tennis: Teams 1/2, 3/4, 5/6 etc. will be placed to either bracket.

We could be playing Milan or Jive in the round of 16. Our potential Quarter Final opponents come from Real, Bayern, City, Atletico, Leverkusen and Celtic.

Liverpools side of the draw has them with Monaco, Brest, PSG, Benfica in round of 16, and potential Quarter final from Sporting, Atalanta, Dortmund, Club Brugge, Lille and Aston Villa.

Yep. Top two is a major benefit in this system.

It'll be disappointing if we don't make the semis from here.

Nice win by Dinamo over Milan, really good game overall, there was a scare in the 2nd, Milan was more dangerous with 10 man but on the other hand Dinamo had 2 more goals chalked of. Too bad 11 points werent enough, massive loss to Bayern 9:2 and 2:2 with Monaco when we were leading 2:0 payed the price.

Last night's matches made all the difference. As it stood yesterday pre game, you guys would have played Bayern, Real, Juve or Celtic, and us in 3rd we'd have played Brest, Dortmund, PSV or Club Brugge. The results last night changed all that.
