Well that's Van Gaals opinion. Sir Alex's opinion is/was very different to Van Gaals. We need a player in defence who's got the big game experiences, played in Europe, been there, got the t-shirt. We have enough blooming young players especially in defence! I can't comment on whether the lad is any good because I've only ever seen him play in the World Cup and that's really not a good way of evaluating a players quality.

I don't think you have much to fear. A strong lad with a bit of grit and determination.

Needs to mature a little and make the dirty side of his game go away.

I think we should just wait for him to play before judging him. Different players react differently to different surroundings and systems.

Utd summed up in a day - leaks of £100m package for a player followed by Utd don't want to pay a certain amount.

Facts speak for themselves, Utd do not pay the going rate. Di Maria? More chance of me playing this week at Sunderland.

If we are preparing a medical for Rojo - I am seriously worried. It will take us 4 weeks to get it done

So we need experience at the back and we go sign a 23 year old. Wonderful.

Granted we could probably do with someone more for the here and now (not to say we won't still do that tbf) but signing a promising young player is never a bad thing, no matter what the circumstances.

What are these facts?

£27m for a toilet brush.
£28m for an 18 year old left back.
£29m for an uncapped Spanish midfielder.
£37m for a Chelsea player.

Seems to me like we don't mind paying a bit more than we should.

We will pay more for players who aren't worth that. Yet when someone comes along who is worth the asking price we won't pay it. Bonkers.

Sporting fans seem to love him though.

I'll judge for myself anyway, I think he's going to be a quality addition.

Maybe we've been thinking about signing two CBs from the get go. One a left footed player (Vermaelen/Rojo) and another more established quality CB (Hummels/Benatia)?

I'd normally agree with you Carl, but when you look at the players we have in defence and the wealth of experience we lost in defence recently then you begin to wonder if the funds should be pushed into a more experienced captain material at the back. That's certainly what I'd do with the funds, not go for another young player. All we're doing is making a very young squad even younger.

That's just how I see the situation with our squad atm. I haven't seen the lad play outside the WC, but i'd be surprised if he came into the squad and instantly because our first choice CB (which is frankly what we need).

Although true, what it does show is, we have been terrible in the market.
When it comes to actually spending the money, we won't be anywhere near the top of that list, what it shows is, we buy players, they seem to be the wrong ones, we end up losing a lot on them, and have very little resale value

Has Shaw ever played CB for Southampton.
He is the right build, tall and strong. I am just thinking, he could fit the bill for LVG. Pacey, good with the ball at his feet.
Could he play LCB while Rojo plays LB. I liked the look of Rojo in the world cup, thought he did quite well, but from what I've read on here is, as a CB, he isn't the best

What if City had gotten Benatia and PSG Di Maria?
Seems like we are stumbling into our marquee targets, rather than thoughtfully and purposefully acquiring them....

That could be the case, but you'd think that the more established CB would be the higher priority in this given situation though? I'm crossing my fingers you're right though. We need a Hummels/Benatia desperately.

On the net spend thing: it's a classic example of "let's take some figures, but make sure they're the ones that suit our agenda".

Bump that 5 transfer windows up to 10, and then see what the numbers say.

We dont play the going rate for top players but we are more than happy to massively overpay for good to just under top tier players.

Looking at Chelsea's squad this evening. We are miles away from them at the moment.
