No point keeping Chris Smalling at all, he's 25 in November and hasn't even come close to fulfilling his potential, If Arsenal want' him they can pay hard cash, which would give us more funds to buy a top draw centre half. Bringing in, Someone like Hummels, Benatia or even Marquinhos will be excellent business. Losing Smalling will hardly effect us, why is everyone getting hurt over it?

So we have money but we won't be drawn into bidding wars that might make us spend more of it? I guess it's nice that we feel we have the luxury to be that high minded when every club we approach will surely try to start a bidding war...

Not sure I get this "we want players who really want to play for Manchester United" stuff either. What does that actually mean in real terms?

It means nothing. He doesn't know anything most likely and is engaging in speculation. The fact is, the club have spent big sums on players in the recent past, so it suggests they are less bothered about a few million here and there than is being suggested.

Suggesting that the club won't let the selling club "name their price" for a player is obvious - nobody wants to be taken for a ride and long term it'll do their negotiating position no good at all to be seen as a soft touch. But the fact is that they are seemingly more than willing to pay what needs to be paid to get the players they want - Shaw, Mata and Herrera suggest that, as do the fairly credible rumours that they were prepared to pay mega wages to Kroos before LVG decided against it.

The Journo's seem desperate at teh moment to put a "different" spin on the same stories when infact, they seem to have no idea what's going on.

Yeah let's give away a centre back for another, when the main reason we are buying one is because we are short in that position. No chance.

We need 4 centre backs, regardless of how good Smalling is - selling him would still leave us needing another CB. We don't need money either.

Smalling is arguably our best defender. Selling him, especially to a rival, would be a terrible decision.

Well our "best defender" obviously isn't good enough, so why not sell him to a team like Arsenal? Let's be honest here, Arsenal have hardly been our rivals for at least the last 8 years. If he is indeed our best defender, then we would need two centre backs anyway. Jones and Evans are good enough to provide cover.

And Phil 'hurl myself at every tackle and get injured every four seconds' Jones is? Smalling is currently our best CB, and it would be absolutely absurd to sell a player in a position we aren't stocked in just to sign a player who isn't only worse, but far more prone to injury. You never sell to rivals if you want real success, leave that to the likes of Arsenal. Marquinhos? He isn't anywhere near his potential either. Speaks wonders if PSG want David Luiz over him. The other two names are pipe dreams at the moment.

We need to bring in two centre backs imo, Having 5 would be overkill, so one of either Smalling, Jones or Evans would have to be sold.

He clearly is good enough though, he has bags of ability. You're just underrating him.

So much shit news today. Nobody knows anything about Vidal. And we can only hope we don't go for Vermaelen. Rather go for de Vrij and blind

Oh bloody hell, CLOSE UP, FORGET NEXT SEASON Bebe has been sold. So not only do we not want the worlds best midfielder, we also sold the best Winger/Striker in Portugal :(

Certain people shockingly underrate Smalling, fortunately most people don't. Play him in his best position, that's all that's needed, then there will be no doubt. Swap him indeed, get a grip...
Can't think of a match he had last season where he played at CB and actually didn't perform.

What about Phil "hurl myself at every tackle and get injured every four seconds Jones" ?

Smalling is not our best CB, Evans is much better.

Arsenal are not our Rivals, where did you get that ridiculous notion? They haven't competed for the league in a long, long time, although that is beginning to change!

Marquinhos is brilliant, he is only 20 and he has plenty of time to improve, Buying Luiz is baffling.

If we pay up, we can get Benatia!

Colin knows...

He's our best defender in my opinion. Unfortunately some people have a skewed view on him based on how bad he is as a fullback. When played centrally he's class.

Yep. He's still very young, was in and out of the team and is stupidly wasted at RB. Time for him and Jones to shine now, LVG won't take no shit.

He's 25 in 4 months, he's not 'very young'. Still our best centre back mind, people massively underrate him based on his performances at right back.

Jones is nowhere near his potential either. Do we chuck him too? 24 is a very young age for CB's, he isn't damaged goods like Young. Evans isn't, but let's not get into that right now. Arsenal will be competing for a top four finish just like us next season, ergo, rivals. Marquinhos has plenty of time but Smalling doesn't? Are the days longer in France? As I said, this isn't some alternate reality where once players who had potential grow older than 21 and haven't fully impressed they're render useless, there is plenty of time for Smalling to develop. And he will do.

City walked away from that deal. If the price is too much for them then why do you think there's any chance that we would pay it?

You don't need to be an itk to see that it's simply not going to happen.

City have to be wary because of FFP. They have a limit on their spending.

Underrated is he?

Every time I've seen him play centre back, he gives away silly fouls by our box which we often conceded from this season. His passing ability is almost non existent. Even in 2013 he was kept out the team by Ferdinand and Evans!
