I almost, well i don't but i almost hope someone else comes in and takes him from under our noses. It would serve us right because we never seem to learn from our mistakes.

You mean like the time when we didn't return to Bilbao, without the three muskateers, and didn't pay a buyout clause for Herrera?

Why is anything other than "name your price" a mistake?

If you're buying an asset for millions you'd be fecking mental not to try and haggle. Why just throw an extra £5m you don't have to at something just because you're too embarrassed not to.

How hard would you think it'd make future deals if we gained a reputation of just paying the asking price regadless. We'd get a City/PSG 40% inflation on top of every deal.

How many players have we lost out on at the last minute because we were dragging the transfer on too long, trying to get a few million of the price or refusing to pay an agent fee (which is part of the game now)?

As much as all the other clubs.

There's no way United are put off by a fee of £34 million (given what they've spent on Herrera and Shaw) but there's also no way Juventus only rate Vidal at £34 million. If reports of United being put off by a fee are accurate then you'd have to imagine the fee is much, much higher.

I wouldn't say so. If barca, Real Madrid and bayern set their sights on a player they usually get them. They might pay over the odds but that's the way the game is now.

I thought he had a good tournament. Great work ethic and bravery. Good player.
I don't think so. Got dropped for Kuyt and only came back in when there were injuries. Very weak on the ball and squandered possession far too many times.

Sure if we overpay we can also get the players we want. But as someone else already said, that's not a business model we want to build. Even with Woody's shortcomings transfer-wise, the man is a genius at making money and generating constant revenue. The countless amounts of sponsorship deals he got us has pretty much got us debt-free. We don't want to be under debt again, so I'd say our current way of doing things is perfect.

Just watch FFP catch up to Real and Bayern one day. And remember Barca can't spend/buy anyone after this summer.

No mate, you just don't remember the players they 'miss out on' (or are only ever rumoured to be pursuing) because you don't obsessively follow every tiny rumour for them, only for us, and the English media don't bother filling their pages with potential transfer rumours for them, only for us.

They are the three clubs who miss out the less but they still do, Barcelona (David Luiz, Ozil, Javi Martinez or Thiago Silva), Bayern ( Ozil, Vidal, David Luiz) and Madrid (Suarez, Hazard and Neymar)

All the clubs miss out on players the difference is how the press reports it. When it comes to United everything is dramaticized.

No the difference is you don't spent a lot of time on Barcelona, Bayern or Madrid forums. Do you really think we're the only club for whom every transfer is a saga? Real Madrid tracked Ronaldo for what was it, two years? We've been heavily linked with Vidal for barely a few weeks and already we're acting as if our dying swan act is more dramatic than the others.

All makes perfect sense and I'm far from someone suggesting we just act like it's Football Manager and buy players no matter what. That said, we're up against it this summer in terms of getting in top players. I'm sure plenty of them wouldn't even consider us because of no CL football. If - and I have no idea if this is the case and am just speculating - we mess around on the fee for a very gettable player and end up losing out, it'll all have been for nothing again.

I've long thought for a while that our approach to the market is odd. We seem to have that Barca-esque arrogance about buying players which leads us to believe we only have to show a bit of interest and the player and club will fall at our feet, regardless of price, but with almost no evidence of recent success at the top level of the market. At the moment the precedent we have set is that we'll usually dick around for long enough that the deal falls apart. There'll never be value in this mythical market we seem to think exists. You'd hope this summer will change that.

Completely agree with what you're saying there but I think the fact we paid 30m quid for a teenage fullback does hint that things are changing in this regard. Which is reassuring.

True. Though we've always been pretty comfortable overpaying for young players with potential, albeit not on that scale.

I meant in england i watch the Real Madrid official tv and they are proper drama queens but they turn the page after a great signing. With United people still refer to Pogba or Hazard when we have Mata, RVP or Januzaj now.

Like you say, it's the amount by which we overpaid that's encouraging. We did go big on Rooney and (to a lesser extent) Nani and Anderson but this is the first time I can remember that we've paid a blatantly ludicrous fee to make sure we get our man. The first time since Rio Ferdinand, come to think of it (way back before the Glazers darkened our doors)

Yeah good points, I didn't think about those players. I think Barca have been linked with every defender on Earth actually.

If he repeated the 'one of the biggest clubs in the world' bit to two independent broadcasters, it's fair to say that it wasn't something he said off the cuff to an interviewer just to get them off his case.

It'll be interesting to see if this apparent splurge is an actual change in philosophy towards the market, or just a once off reaction to a bad season and lots of transition (particularly if FFP actually bites).

Isn't "deal off" and everyone getting tetchy (his agent) what usually happens just before a deal goes through?

In fairness, he has absolutely no incentive to deny the interest, or rebuff the questions. He might get a new deal, or generate interest from elsewhere, or even just raise his overall profile.

Yeah figure of speech, but you get what I mean. You're not so interested in the rumours for them, and nor are the English media, so there's an illusion that we are in for (and miss out on) far more players.

MUFC adamant they won't pay £34m for Vidal. There's interest but won't pay what they think is over the odds.

Full Vidal interview.

Arturo Vidal concedes Manchester United are ‘one of the biggest clubs in the world’, but says he is happy at Juventus.

The 27-year-old has been the subject of continued links to the Old Trafford outfit this summer, with talk of a possible €44m, £35m deal in the works.

However, on from reports in England that a move at such a price level is unlikely, the player himself has indicated that where there may still be uncertainty on his future, he is happy where he currently is.

“On my future, I want to return to Italy and then we will see what happens,” Vidal has begun in conversation today with Fox Sports.

“I really do not know anything about what is going on. I’m not reading the papers, I am very calm, and I’m doing everything possible to recover from a knee injury.

“Things are going well and I am happy at Juventus.

“I’m concerned about doing things with the people that I love, everything else is being dealt with by my agent.

“It would be wrong to talk about another team, I just know that [United] are one of the biggest clubs in the world, but I still have a contract with Juventus.

“It would be disrespectful to talk about another team in front of Juventus and my teammates.”

Vidal raced back to the field this summer in time for Chile’s World Cup campaign, despite undergoing knee surgery on a meniscus injury in May.

“The knee is okay, I’m not doing anything. I am resting, taking advantage of the holiday break.

“I have tried to let it be because the last two months have been very intense.

Vidal and his Chile teammates were eliminated in the Round of 16 at this summer’s World Cup by hosts Brazil.

“I think we will be much better for the upcoming Copa America. We will play in our country, with our people, it will be a wonderful tournament.

“Hopefully we will do well, we have time to accomplish something important.”

I simply can't believe that, we paid £27m for Fellaini, £27m Shaw and £30m for Herrera.. there is no way we are "paying over the odds" at £34m for this bloke.

Isn't "deal off" and everyone getting tetchy (his agent) what usually happens just before a deal goes through?

I think it's brinkmanship from both parties. Vidal's agent is pushing for the move but he doesn't want Vidal to be look upon poorly by Juve fans. At the same time, United are haggling for prices. Fact is, all this news about us having a ton of money can also be detrimental to United. Opposition parties will start demanding outrageous fees like they do with Real and Barca, and I don't think we're too fond of the idea.

Making a stand for a certain price is probably what's led to internal sources within Juve's camp to spread the news in the media that the "Deal is OFF". Clubs like to do this just as we saw with Athletico Bilbao, who in an effort to pacify its fans, said they had rejected United which clearly was not the whole truth.

If this deal were well and truly off the table, we'd have a statement from Juve directly or Vidal for that matter. Thiago did it, Fabregas did it and so did Toni Kroos. Vidal has been quoted as saying things which don't sound like outright rejection. More like - "I'm not sure." Safe to say that the clubs are negotiating right now, with the player ready to pack his bags.

Relax, everything points to this deal happening. We're just setting out our stall to ensure we're not taken for a ride.

Vidal's quotes are very interesting indeed.
