Not necessarily anything new, but looks like we're still looking for this deal. If we do keep pursuing this, I think we'll be looking to get the price down by a couple of million.

If this story about Vermaelen is true, then it's very strange. Even if he was a brilliant CB, why would we go for another injury prone defender? Makes no sense to me, I therefore I say it won't happen.

I haven't seen too much of Vermaelen but is he really that bad?

I personally don't mind him as a player. He's comfortable on the ball and I think he's a decent enough defender although I know a lot on here don't rate him. Strikes me as a van Gaal type player.

However, his injury record is a big concern. I wouldn't be surprised if we're trying to negotiate a lower fee with Arsenal on this basis, with a quite a bit being made up by add-ons based on his appearances.

Vermaelen would be a really poor signing. If we are signing a centre back, we need someone who's going to cement his place right away, not an arsenal reject who will be in an out of the physio room as much as the rest of our defence.

Talk sport are never reliable. His response to Agreeing terms with united etc I can't see this happening - not good enough/injuries.

He told Sky Sports: "I know there has been a lot of talk and a lot of rumours but the only thing I can say is that it's not true.

"Everybody understands my situation at Arsenal and that I have one year left.
"I understand that people are going to talk but I am here in Brazil and I am enjoying my time and I'm focused on what I am doing."
However, Vermaelen refused to comment when asked if he had held talks with manager Arsene Wenger over his future.

"We talk a lot when I am at Arsenal but it's not what I am going to discuss here,” he added. “It is something you are going to have to ask him.”

How do you all but agree personal terms? Surely they're either agreed or not.

Not sure what this guy Serge is saying (or even who he is) but Talksport are basically just repeating what was reported by Matt Law in the Telegraph a fortnight ago. Personal terms agreed with the player, but not yet the fee with Arsenal.

Came across this picture on Twitter.

What do they all have in common?

They're all celebrating a throw-in?

We may aswell stick with Jones and Evans. Vermaelan is awful
We need a new centre back whether they're first choice or not.

Have to agree on Vermaelen though, even if we're looking for just an affordable option (i.e. not Hummels) there must be so many better options across Europe.

He is far from awful. The problem is that he is very injury prone but if the club has studied his injuries then maybe they know what to do (training and other things) in order for him to not get injured. On his good form (when he is fit) he is currently better than Smalling and Jones as an overall player. It also helps that he is a very good passer and he plays with his left foot which apparently is very important in Van Gaal system. Also, he won't be a big investment and likely will serve as a gap until we sing someone better of Jones & Smalling are ready.

Obviously I would prefer Hummels but if we can't get him then a cheap player like Vermaelen can be a good signing. It is imperative IMO to get another defender cause only 3 CB (and all injury prone players) isn't enough.

Does seem an odd one with Vermaelen.

He'd be swapping 3rd choice at Arsenal to surely 4th choice here?

Not sure about Vermaelen. If he stays injury free he could turn out to be a good buy, but he could also spend majority of time on the treatment table.
