Let's be honest, he's worth that figure. He was the engine last season for a CL winning side. Versatile and deadly.

If Balague has this right, don't even bother trying to sign Vidal. However good he may be, you'll be paying similar to what's being paid for Di Maria.

Your point being? We have the money and Woodward wasn't talking up his own arse (for once) when he said that we'll spend like we've never spent before. Remember when Real Madrid bought Kaka and Ronaldo in the same window? Well, guess what we can do the same.

I don't get this Blind thing. If we are confident and want him, then why the delay? What are we waiting for?

I'd say it's pretty obvious that we won't be going for Vidal at this stage. No way we'll spend a fortune on two players with limited sell on value in a few years. I can maybe see someone like Blind and a less expensive signing like De Jong.

Fair point.

We need to get some sales in before the end of the window. Surely some of Shinji/Hernandez/Valencia/Young/Cleverley/Anderson gaggle of has been/might have beens/maybes will be let go.

Vidal at these prices would be madness. He s a high mileage player, not to mention his injury issues.

Which team do you support btw? Out of curiosity. Seem you refer to United as "you" plenty of times.

I don't think we'll do anything with Vidal either, but I don't think the sell-on thing is an issue as I'm sure we'd be glad to take all of their premium years and have them re-establish us a major force over worrying about sell-on's.

The 'buy players with decent future sell on' policy has been utter rubbish for us anyway.

Blind would be a very good signing in my opinion. He's a very tidy, very clever player who's still very much improving. He'd immediately offer quality cover for two or three positions and I see no reason why he can't develop into a top class "number six" for us down the line (De Boer and Van Gaal have both stated that that's where they see his long-term future). His intelligence could really set him apart in that role.

I've never been more certain than I am now that the target Shaw keeps talking about is De Jong.

De Jong would be good for a year, protect the defence and help us into the top 4. But he is a short term solution, would hopefully be cheap.

I think I asked you before about how quick he is, but do you reckon he'd be physically imposing enough if the midfield was, say, him, Herrera and Mata? I've not seen a massive amount of him other than the WC, but I suppose only based on that the worry would be that we'd be a bit soft in the middle of the field with those three. Or is that unfair?

In ruthless terms, the biggest issues with these superstars is when they are no longer worthy of their wages, they can be a huge burden on the club. That's the time when we try to move them on.

It's probably not the first contract that's the issue, but the second one when the older player wants a long-term deal and the club start to look at rolling contracts.

Barcelona is the team I support. I do admit to begin very opinionated for somebody who doesn't support
United.

It's hardly even a policy for us, just an excuse I think. Look at all the players we've sold bar Ronaldo the past 7-8 years. Think the most was Buttner or something, at 5m? We don't care what we get for players as long as we sell them when they're done here.

That's interesting, if it's an accurate quote then it's good imo that he doesn't see Rooney as, as strong a number ten as say Mata. Hopefully though he's looking in to other formations like a diamond. What Di Maria if he's coming up the pitch with his work rate a bonus not a necessity.

He's no weaker or less aggressive than Lahm. Van Gaal even played him in his trio of center backs during the WC, so I'm thinking he can handle himself. But I guess he'll be a discerning #6 rather than a physical one. I found this article interesting:
