Why are we signing a centre-back!? :wenger:
So we get to play Fellaini as a 10

-------------------Fellaini

-------------Jones----- -Garay----

------Evans----Rio----Vidic------Smalling

We've had a gentleman's or verbal agreement for a few months now if the papers are to be believed. Not sure why this is making news now. Can't believe we'll actually sign him. It's Gaitan mk II. Benfica are clearly desperate to sell us someone. Anyone.

Jones and Smalling can barely get a game at centre back why are we shelling out for another defender? Seems like a complete waste if money. A right back and centre back signed so far....all we need now is a new striker to complete the set of unneeded transfers.

Would share prices not fall because money is being taken out of the club?

Huh? How is money being taken out? Its just being spent. Investors would have modeled in a particular 'capex' on players and this signing would imply it might be exceeded. Hence the fall.

Exactly, moneys being spent so it's getting taken out of the bank to fund a transfer.

I agree 100% that central midfield is the main area that requires reinforcing, and I hope it will turn out that way by the start of the season.
However, I think those of you criticising Garay and/or the need to sign a central defender conveniently forget that we conceded 43 goals in the league last season, more than Chelsea, and more than ARSENAL for goodness sake. Given that we had DDG as the best GK of the season, what do you think that suggests?
I see that Rio, Vidic, Jones and Smalling are prone to injuries and we should be thankful Evans was so good last season. Do you all forget the emergency deployment of Carrick at centre-half in the last TWO seasons? Simply, it's not that the current roster of centre-halves is inadequate, they just keep getting crocked!
And GBP17m is worth it for a strong, consistent centre-half.

As explained in the article - Cash drain from a big signing.

Don't want to derail this thread with non-twitter muppetness but the chances of the rumour of signing a player affecting share prices by 9% is ridiculous. If we signed someone with huge potential for making the club money (Ronaldo for example) then that would be different.

A) How would an investor know about this rumour.
B) Even if they knew, it is only a rumour...
C) The share price would only go down if it was seen as a poor acquisition.

Forget football for a second and just imagine that we are a construction firm that just bought a regional competitor for £17m. If it is seen as a poor acquisition (in the views of some investors) then the price will lower. If the benefits IFAD the acquisition outweigh the cost (opening up new markets, the acquired company had a strong pipeline of contracts etc) then it will go up. How would an investor know whether the deal was value for money?? As far as I am aware, Alan Hansen and Alan shearer have not been doing contract work for hedge funds. And even if they did get a football expert, it is so subjective anyway. Look at this forum with half happy with strootman and half not. Ditto Fellaini. If we can't come to a conclusion how would a us non-'soccer' fan know? Sorry, not buying that.

Even if they just view the purchase of a player as bad due to cash leaving the firm; they can't have been expecting a dividend and it is hardly a shock as we spent £50m ish 2 years ago and £40m ish last year. Of course £50m a year is factored in as estimated outgoings on transfers. Maybe it is cash flow they are worried about but that is hardy a concern with our biggest revenue quarter coming up.

As I said, one I the world's most successful and most famous fund managers selling his stake is much more likely to have caused this, although I haven't actually seen any articles on this yet. Know more when the markets open in ny if true.

So back to business, this thiago fella eh??

It's clear that investors don't rate Ezequiel Garay; so much so that his signing has instantly wiped £200m from the value of the club.

Dark tines indeed. Moyes out.

I think it suggests that 42 of them came from the left back area.

Markets have been selling off in general, linking United's sharer price fall to a rumour about a new signing is ridiculous.

That's harsh Jonno. Do I take it you are not the president of the Evra Appreciation Society?
A slight exaggeration, but I do think that in the past 3-4 seasons, our leakiest area has undoubtedly been at Left back. I don't blame Evra, I blame the tactics, Evra is instructed to play as an attacking wing back, to support a very (at times) weak left wing, down to the fact that it's mostly a striker or right winger playing out there, which subsequently leaves our left back exposed, often dragging a centre back out wide exposing our middle. I actually love Evra, but I think our tactics have exposed him, and at times after 70-80 minutes he does look tired - after 60 games a season I don't blame him. Moyes deploys Baines in the same manner so I don't expect it to change.

Markets are fickle things. They operate on rumour. I too don't believe it, but wouldn't be surprised if that Garay is the thing we could attribute the fall to.

Cash out of reserves being forked out as a upfront payment, would be one reason. There some other effects wrt uncertainty, risk etc.

The debt refinancing in late May is supposed to save £10m a year which should have with cashflow and reserves though.
