Turkish referendum

Read some polls today and it seems to be a close race.

He's done everything possible to manipulate this process. If he loses he'll give it another run through some other way soon after. His life's goal is to break the Kemalist Republic, and he's not going to stop trying until he achieves it or dies.

Hoping for the best, expecting the worst. Operation Corrupt The Shit Out Of This Referendum will obviously be underway right about now.

Yep pretty much 50/50 from what I've seen, although Paddypower has him odds on to win. What time are we expecting the result tonight?

I'd be amazed if 'No' wins.

No should win. It's been ahead in the polls. Devlet Bahçeli, the leader of the MHP and firm backer of yes, suddenly swung to no earlier in the week to give the No campaign even more momentum in case it didn't have enough.

The problem is, it's close enough for him to corrupt and claim a last minute push to victory. And if/when they're declared the winner, it'll be sour grapes to complain about the result and a case of just accepting it and getting on with things. For me, it will be a depressing continuation of a never-ending misery.

Early results from a Kurdish are are showing No has prevailed there. That's a very positive sign.

CNN Türk reporting that votes without an official stamp are being counted as well.

Don't the Kurds hate Erdogan? If so then that result would be no surprise.

Where exactly is this support coming from? The elderly and Conservative Muslims? The latter I can understand but with the former I'd imagine they'd be appalled to see Atatturk's secular vision being torn apart.

NTV reporting 63% in favour of Yes

They're far too predictable.

Aren't the Kurdish strongly opposed to Erdogan and hate the guy? If so then that result would no surprise.

You'd think so, but they're torn between the idea of him/the Turkish military having devastated their cities and the possibility of a Yes win meaning a greater possibility for a Kurdish autonomy. Ultimately, I think they're going against him. That's my rudimentary analysis of the situation, anyway.

It depends which elderly people you're talking about. Conservatives will go for him, regardless of age. Elderly people in the CHP strongholds obviously value Atatürk's vision more than they do. However, I've even seen old people from conservative strongholds like Konya shitting all over his vision for a new Turkey, which is why I find the 63% number so laughable.

It's not that simple. Yes they despise Erdogan but they're not exactly in cahoots with the Turkish military establishment either.

Ok. that would make it a bit more complicated than i thought it would.

We're now down to 60%. They've done this in so many previous elections. They'll post a high number to make victory look certain, expect people to turn off, and then can even do corruption to actually put it in their favour. They're such simpletons.

Edit - just dipped below 59%. Keep those CHP, MHP and fed up AKP votes coming in, please.

Was it meant to be the case that workers at the polling station would stamp everyone's vote slip before they put it in the ballot box?

Turkey is ruled by mobocracy, rule of law and institutions are non-existent.

In short 'Yes' will win.

Also, Kurds have voted for Erdogan before but that was before the conflict with PKK started up again, so it's not a straightforward situation.

Show your ID, get your ballot paper that has the stamp, vote, and stick it in.

Yeah, they've been a good source of the votes for previous elections. If I were Kurdish, seeing what he's done to HDP would automatically turn me off. Then again, I'm not, and I don't know what they're truly thinking.

feck! It looks a large win for him :(

Nope. They've counted conservative strongholds first. That's why 'Evet' (yes) keeps coming down all of the time i.e. they're starting to bring in No votes. As I said above, it's a typical strategy of theirs to make people turn off and stop paying attention.

So there is still a glimpse of hope?

Do you have a good site that shows live results coming in?

So then the poll workers must be involved in the fraud. The video shows 1 guy putting 5 seperate envelopes in the box.

Its not a surprise, but we have evidence that fake voting is going on.

More than a glimmer. I assure you, they've lost this referendum. If they 'win', it means democracy lost.

No, sorry. All of the channels belong to him and I'm not following a particular one. Just keep checking the result on Hürriyet: http://www.hurriyet.com.tr/

Take anything you see right now with a pinch of salt.

Sadly, nothing will be done about it. They have audio of Recep telling his son to hide his money. Doesn't sound like a man who should be calling for a referendum, does it. He should be in jail, not on the verge of changing Turkey irrevocably.

Reports that No is actually ahead, and have just edged ahead in Istanbul. The nerves are getting to me now.

you're more optimistic than I am but let's hope you're right. It would be nice to be on the winning side of a vote for once as elections and referenda have left me a bit hopeless this year.

Haha. I really shouldn't joke but what are the chances that if it's a No vote Erdogan just says feck the result and takes the new powers for himself regardless?

They haven't counted areas in Istanbul like Beşiktaş. No is edging ahead and they know it. They just won't admit it.

Do you want a serious answer? He can't. This is nothing but speculation on my part, but I think the Turkish people would be on the streets if he did, and should that fail, maybe we'd see another coup attempt. Turkish people have endured too much bullshit to just have him wave a dismissive hand at their collective voice.

Constant reports of serious widespread corruption being carried out. Here we go

Think about this so that I don't sound like a whiny bitch without a reason to complain if the result is Yes - they're literally allowing votes without official stamps to be counted. This is disgusting.

Hasn't he more or less already done this the past few months since the coup? You'd think people would've gone to the streets to protest the mass arrests and firings already.

I think he already said that a no vote wouldn't be the end of it a while back but no point speculating about it no, we first need to actually get that no vote. Let's hope that the majority of the voters show some sense!

Yeah it's pretty awful, hopefully there'll be protests if Erdogan wins but unfortunately he'll get his own way no doubt.
