Trump/Russia/SDNY investigation

Maybe Trump's new lawyers aren't as stupid...playing the media well here. Leak questions, act enraged about leaked questions. Rile up base, rinse, repeat.

It's never going to end is it?

Not a chance he'll ever be interviewed.

The NYT journalist responsible for the leaked questions story strongly hinted on Maddow last night that John Dowd is behind the leak and that he left Trumps legal team specifically because he was at odds with the rest of the team about Trump doing an interview, he also pointed out that Guliani was brought on recently to negotiate the terms of the interview because they believe that the investigation won't end until an interview happens. Theory being that Dowd, by leaking the questions, is still trying to convince Trump not to do the interview.

I find that hard to believe. Any decent journalist would never give any information away that would reveal their "anonymous" source for a story they published.

Yeah I've listened to it again and he doesn't actually suggest it came from Dowd merely that Dowd was involved in the discussions in March when these questions were formulated before quitting 2 weeks later. Think it was Maddow herself that speculated it could've come from Dowd saying something to the effect of who knows what's going to end up in the New York Time after your lead lawyer quits.

If it's anyone with any power whatsoever, the Obstruction of Justice charges will be racking up. That's a big statement from Rosenstein, I have a feeling he's also looking to make it difficult to sack him without it looking very bad.

@Raoul - Can't remember who wrote it but have you seen that piece about the leaked questions? One particular question states that various entities in the Trump Campaign (inc Manafort) reached out to the Russian government and questioned what Trump knew of this.

Basically... they have evidence that the Trump Administration colluded or attempted to collude with the Russian Government.

Not sure which piece that is as there have been quite a few in the past couple of days. Let me know if you find it.

@Raoul whats your gut feeling as it stands right now? Is impeachment a possibility?

I have a feeling this is going to end badly for Trump...both for what he did during the campaign and even more so for his attempts to cover up various things after he became President. The big exposure during the campaign (imo) is the Don Jr. meeting with the Russians. Apparently there was a phone call that Don Jr. made during the meeting. Adam Schiff says it was to a blocked number, but the Republicans have prevented the Dems from seeing who it was. If that number belonged to Trump and Don Jr. called ask him about permission to proceed with the meeting then Trump is in big trouble as it would prove he was aware of coordination with the Russians. After he became President he has (imo) big exposure for obstruction of justice for firing Comey. There are also potential charges for financial crimes and perjury (if he lies to Mueller).

Mueller isn't likely to finish up until after the mid terms so if the Dems take control of the house then things could get interesting.

Great post. Cheers

First I've seen of that. Unfortunately, Trump would obviously pardon Don Jr. for any federal related crime he may be involved with so I can't see this one going too far.

If Trump pardons his own son for a federal crime then the lid comes off. He loses half his GOP support. It’s just too openly corrupt.

Which GOP have you been observing these last few years?

There really hasn't been anything they're not willing to overlook or try to explain away these days. Things like racism, sexism, adultery, pedophilia, theft, corruption are all no big deal now. They won't even blink looking the other way while Trump pardons his mouth breather son

Its hard to say what would happen, but at the end of the day I just can't see him stand by and do nothing while his son is facing jail time.

His base and repub pols will do nothing to hurt Trump if he did pardon his son. They’re more likely to go on the offensive to deflect from an uncomfortable truth.

I don't think he would either, but there's a limit to what a lot of his supporters will stand by. Obviously there is a hardcore who will never move no matter what, but there's a lot who are already getting uncomfortable with what they're finding themselves standing behind. I'm hearing a lot more unease from those people recently, and a lot more early signs of them emotionally disengaging. I could obviously be wrong, but I think something as blatant as pardoning his own kid would push a significant number of them out of his camp.
