Television True Detective | Season 2 Spoilers

4 episodes and already easily one of the best shows I've ever watched. This season will surely be one of the greatest ever, they can do no wrong. I know I'm getting well ahead of myself but I don't care.

It's a bold claim but I can't disagree.

Think the only way they could balls it up is with some stupid twist ending which the creator has kind of already said isn't going to happen.

I think the harder job will be following this season with a new set of characters tbh. Although with the plaudits this is rightfully getting I doubt they will be short of quality casting options.

If this season keeps up this quality, which I have no doubt will, expectations for next year will be ridiculous.

Did you see Reggie LeDoux's profile, he's 6'7"! Imagine him coming at you with a machete in his boxers and a gas mask.

Can't wait for next week's.

I had to just laugh at the end, its so good I had to laugh at how good it is.

Absolutely incredible. It has the intensity of the best bits of Breaking Bad with something else, perhaps The Wire?, mixed in. Matthew McConaughey is unbelievable in this.

That final scene was one of the greatest I've seen. One continuous shot, incredible.
I think the only other episodes of shows I can recall that had me gripped like that were: Crawl Space from Breaking Bad season 4, the seasons 1 and 2 finales of The Sopranos, and The Cost and The Cleanup from season 1 of The Wire.

Not having any hair facilitates age transformation much easier with wigs and makeup

That's what I mean. I just imagine McConaughey coming out of two hours makeup and then them just slapping a quick brush across Woodys brow... "looking good Woody".

Must be wounding.

I ain't spoilering this cause it's in the very first episode, but in the pilot doesn't Rust say that LeDoux wasn't the killer?

Rust said the person they caught wasn't the right person. We don't actually know if it was ledoux they caught though.

Ledoux is the guy shown at the end of episode 3. Hart mentioned a gunfight. I think they may have accidentally killed ledoux. It's implied that something big goes down at that point - hart mentions a gunfight, Cohle calls him a monster and likens it to his dad talking about Vietnam.

I don't think he said he wasn't the 'right person', did he? Just that it's implied because the killings are happening again in 2012. Maybe I'm wrong.

I thought Rust knew all along they caught the wrong person and so he wasn't surprised with the 2012 killing. I'd need to watch it all again.

Yeah I'm actually tempted to watch the first four again but I might wait til all eight have aired and watch them all at once. You might be right that he wasn't surprised though.

Basically what I think from memory... Cohle knows what's happening in '95 or atleast he thinks he does. They catch someone and close the case. Cohle knows they've fecked up. Then in the present day interviews, Cohle knows about the lake Charles murder and is acting all cocky about it because he knows they caught they wrong person. The detectives ask him how could the killer still be out there if they caught him in 95? And you can tell Cohle knows something, that's when he tells them to start asking the right fcuking questions.

I'm about to watch the first episode, i'm posting without reading anyone's comments. The praise I have heard has been high. I can't wait...

Yeah, that sounds about right. I suppose the pressure from their Chief to go catch someone probably adds to that too.

The most obvious thing is that Tuttle pressures them into closing the case because he is involved somewhere. He also has the "anti-Christian task force" that they're desperate to have replace Hart and Cohle

The Cost was very, very similar to the last true detective when you think about it. Possibly a bit of a homage

It's actually Cohle who asks "how could he be killing if we caught him in '95?" In most of the discussions I've read most people have assumed it's a copycat, but there's been nothing definite to say either way.

He doesn't say it like a question though does he? It's a rhetorical question thrown back at the detectives interviewing him and as Sally says he follows it up with the "start asking the right fkin questions" statement.

It's fairly clear that this new murder is no surprise to him so I'd be surprised if it's a copy cat. Not necessarily the same killer even but those two statements are not mutually exclusive either.

Yeah, now that I think about it, the final tracking shot from the helicopter was very similar. I'd say the show is in the same vein as The Wire in its understated brilliance. The amount of quality programming HBO churns out is pretty stunning.

Well one of the theories I've heard is that it's a big conspiracy run by the top brass in Louisiana, or something along those lines. Not necessarily one killer.

I'm not reading the thread because I've only just noticed this show existed! How is that possible? McConnaghey is one of the best around at the moment and I've always loved Woody Harrelson. I'm going to start this this week I think. This and House of Cards is back! Makes up for having to watch a new episode of The Walking Dead every week.

Raced through the first four episodes, absolutely stunningly good show. If they keep up the quality for the final half (a big ask) then they've made one of the greatest tv season's of all time.

At first I was disappointed to find out its only one season, but the more I think about it, the more I like the idea of a new story and cast every year, instead of dragging out one story which is really what tv's biggest problem is these days, though shows like Breaking Bad show its not impossible to end at the right time. Keeping this as a story told over 8 episodes should ensure it doesn't drag and comes to a natural end, I think a detective show is probably the hardest type of show to keep going too without it seeing forced.

Interesting to see what kind of cast they get for next year (I presume it'll be renewed) I can imagine a lot of big names seeing the hype its getting would be very interested, whilst the chance to emerge yourself in a character for 8 episodes must be enticing. Not like 8 episodes is a big commitment either.

Just watched the first two episodes. This is ace.

McConnaghey is on top form and Harrelson has been a favourite of mine for a while. The pace is just right, the dialogue is gripping, the acting brilliant. Even the fecking credits are a work of art. I don't want to get carried away, as it's still early (although by the looks of it it's still so far so good) but I haven't been this impressed by a TV show since Breaking Bad.

I'm very much one of those people who will usually be on their phone/laptop/generally being distracted while watching most TV or films, but this (as Breaking Bad did) has my complete attention.

Yeah, I said earlier that I don't think they'll have much trouble attracting a top cast for the next season. Let's face it if you're an actor and you're not bothered about the money then TV now is a far better platform for you to ply your trade. Channels like HBO invest a lot of money in their stuff now and the production values have caught up with anything Hollywood churns out.

Literally everything about this show is amazing.

Isn't it. Still waiting for the first contrarian to enter the thread and tell us all how wrong we are (there's always one). I can appreciate script, cinematography, acting, even the soundtrack to a show/movie but it's rare for them all to come together and not miss a single beat. I've even been on the HBO site to check out some of the tunes in each episode and it's opened me up to some new music I wouldn't have usually heard of.
