Trent Alexander Arnold | Real Madrid working on deal (Ornstein)

I guess it depends on how you define club legend. He’s just about snuck into their top 50 appearance makers. Two league titles and one champions league. I’d say there’s a hell of a lot of players with more appearances and trophies throughout Liverpool’s history.

I’m not taking the piss but I don’t think he’d even gets in a top 50 list of United players based on what he won, appearances made etc.

That’s a fair point for a historically successful club. I guess context matters though, in that they last won a CL in 2005? and a league title 30 years ago. The first set of important players to bring those back, especially the league title, for me would go down as a club legend. What you achieve matters a lot more than how long you are at a club in my definition of a legend, but this is of course entirely subjective.

Like let’s imagine we signed Mbappe from Real next year. He comes here and he’s one of the main driving forces in us winning a league title and a CL, and then he leaves after 3 years, I would definitely say he’s a legend for me, because of the impact of what he did, as opposed to someone who was a middling player but was here for ten years.

I don’t understand the Liverpool fans crying about not getting a fee.

Madrid offered them money in January. They knew he wasn’t going to renew.

Yes they'd have been planning for life after Salah, hence Nunez, Diaz, Jota, Gakpo etc being brought in to supplement and eventually replace. However, finding anyone close to Salah's level is extremely difficult. I wish we could find one, screw them!

I mean, that's a fair point! Knowing someone is going to leave is very different to having an adequate replacement.

He is getting destroyed by Liverpool fans on twitter. They turned on him so fast.

Never walk alone eh?
Twitter is no reflection of reality, mostly trolls and people who love to shout a lot. I enjoy twitter for the laughs, I'd never engage on there though.
Of course there will be some normal fans who go down the whole 'traitor' route but I do think the majority will be indifferent/dissapointed at worst. He's served the club very well and not really his fault the club let the contract run down, he would have maybe left anyway but it's more on the club why it's for free.

I think you'll see in the remaining home games, won't be any noticeable booing of Arnold.

What's funny is now all the online anti Liverpool trolls making out that Liverpool are losing one of he greats of the game, while completely dismissing him previously, and likewise Liverpool nuts making out he was useless. The truth being somewhere inbetween, not a great defender but a footballer with other great skills at an elite level. Footballing wise, might turn out a good move all round from a footballing perspective.

This is the problem about the twitter community. It is not real fans who troll, its fans who have weird DP's who are there just to troll.

Most of them wont be Liverpool fans, its basic social media, troll = more engagement.

He was supposed to be a future captain of Liverpool and he was a local lad who has played for Liverpool throughout his whole career. I think the biggest problem for their fans is that he's leaving for free to Madrid in his prime.

We also had players who wanted to leave for Madrid like Beckham and Ronaldo but we made a lot of money out of those transfers. When Beckham left for Madrid, we invested his transfer fee to buy Ronaldo. Trent was supposed to be Gerrard 2.0 for Liverpool but he'll get the reception of Michael Owen once he retires.
Definitely not, once the initial "shock" has been absorbed I think most if not all fans, especially inside Anfield, will appreciate what he's done for the club.

I also really don't get the sudden outrage, it's been pretty clear since last summer that he's off to Madrid imo.

I'm genuinely not sure there is real outrage amongst any significant number of fans. Next time he plays at Anfield it will be clearer what the 'pool fans think.

Is the plan to also get Alonso and play 352? I don't think I've seen Trent as a wing back. He doesn't fit that typical flying wing back mould ala Frimpong so I'm curious what they're planning.
I think that is definitively the plan, though I don't know whether Alonso would necessarily play a 3-4-3 at Real too, but anyway Alexander-Arnold would be the Grimaldo type wing back not the Frimpong one.

For this season he’s 12th in the premier league for chances created, he doesn’t make the top ten big chances created in the world right now either, so he’s one of the best attacking playmakers in Europe how? Wouldn’t one of the best be top five or top 3?
top 10-15 across europe

Check his numbers on fbref, not just this season but over the years too

Doesnt matter whether its a sudden or not sudden outrage, even if You correctly predicted last summer TAA wasnt going to renew and move on.

It just feels cruel for any supporter when your talisman, raised in the Academy from 9years old or something, runs down his contract and feck off for free.

My boyhood club I played for 20 years, Spartak Trnava, found a young keeper Dominik Takáč, at a small local club. He was 14, then became so good he made it to the first team then national team. Rejecting all offers for more than 2 years to extend, then as a free agent signing up for our enemy no.1 Slovan Bratislava. It was akin to prime Gerrard shaking hands with SAF signing for Manchester United. Its stupid behaviour but I somehow understand fans burning TAA´s (and Takáč) jersey.

When this started off as an analogy, I didn't expect that twist.

That's football rivalry for you.

Not a fan of this at all. He is abysmal defensively.

Nope. He was raised in LFC academy, so by UEFA rules, Madrid will have to pay Pool 1,2mil pounds.

Source? I thought training comp was only paid for players up to age 23.

Regardless, it's basically free... (though there's some suggestion they might pay a small fee anyway so they can register him a month early and have him available for the Club World Cup)

Every fan base has their nutters. Most of them can be found on twitter, so it’s not really a surprise. You can probably find fans of any club who think anything you want to find them thinking, if you look.

Think he'll be fine if you have the likes of Valverde covering his flank for him (ala Henderson) and allow him to do his thing from further up the pitch. If you bought him to defend, first and foremost, then yeah - you will likely have an issue.

But i think because you dominate most of your opponents, the speed of your attack and you not also being averse to direct/counter football at times - he'll be a good addition.

He could have been a Liverpool legend. In Madrid I see him being one in a bunch and going Owen route tbh.
Saying that, I understand why he wants to go, when Madrid calls you dont think twice. That's how it is.

Are Ronaldo and Beckham not United legends?

Yep, there were Ipswich fans calling for McKenna to be sacked halfway through the season, when we were in the relegation zone by goal difference. The guy just won back to back promotions, give him a chance!

The word legend is thrown around way too often in my opinion, there are too many different interpretations of it.

Yeah it does amuse me when fans treat their managers a certain way. ‘He’s taken us as far as he can, time to upgrade on him with a sexier name.’ Rather than have patience with the manager that got them there in the first place, and reward him with the time such achievements surely deserve.

They’ll be the same ones shouting about loyalty if that same manager is poached by a bigger club.

Trent will leave after 360 games for the club. It's a huge stint. McManaman played the same number of games and also left on a free to Madrid. He's still looked back on fondly for what he did for Liverpool.

Liverpool are obviously in a better place now than then, but the principle remains.
