I agree we don't need to go crazy but I do think we're a Rooney injury away from being incredibly light up front. Wilson & Hernandez are insufficient backup, considering our targets this season.

Resigned to the fact we're done in this window. We'll save the money for a splurge next summer on Bale or Kane.

We're rich enough to make a short term signing up front, so I don't get why we don't. It seems careless and crazily short sighted to not with our injury record.

A Rooney injury and we're fecked.

We've got two other strikers plus Fellaini and no doubt Memphis can be pushed up front too. Hernandez and Wilson might not be everybody's cup of tea but they can't do any worse than Persie or Falcao last season. I also think we will get more goals from the much improved midfield this season.

Herrera is the only midfielder likely to get 6+ goals and Fellaini's highest in the PL is 11. Hernandez will chip in but he won't be able to lead the line if Rooney is out. All of them will contribute but there definitely isn't enough goals in our team. We'll just have to hope Rooney stays fit and Memphis produce all season long if we are to compete for anything.

What happens to our rivals if their main striker is out? We couldn't justify keeping Falcao, I don't think Walcott is better as a striker than Hernandez, Bony isn't all that, the only team with a good pair of strikers is Liverpool if Sturridge stays fit however they aren't our rivals and there was no point in spending that much on Benteke to be a back up.

Louis van Gaal made use of Olic at Bayern, he probably could figure something out if Rooney got injured. And I also think it's likely Aguero and Costa will miss more games than Rooney.

Surely that's a reason why we can't afford to let the quality of the squad stagnate? We miss out this year and there's no guarantee, with almost certainly a new manager, spending loads next summer will get us back there.

Can hardly call the squad stagnating - how many players have come and gone in the past 2 years:wenger:
If there's a big name player available I'm sure we'll sign him before the end of the window
Why would we have a new manager next summer and why should we spend loads again - we are only going to buy players that will improve us not for the sake of it. Yeah we may possibly spend a lot but will only be on select top players

If Rooney is out for the amount of time City/Chelsea are without Aguero/Costa, we'll be fecked lol.

Think we have enough to get by this season, but a big name Striker would be nice.

Im not sure Rooney has the mobility or control to do the job being asked of him up top. His control and short passing is laughable at times, so much so im baffled it doesn't seem to get noticed more often. The amount of times he slows down attacks by playing simple passes behind a teammate, or fumbles his control is shocking.

Theres a lack of very good strikers around at the moment though, even more so those that can play the sole striker in a 4-2-3-1.

In a nutshell, I shall sleep well tonight having read that.

Why would it be genius? It simply makes more money for the Glazers.

Frankly, I don't care one bit about balancing pour books or buying players for value. I don't see why some fans get so much satisfaction from this?

We have more than enough cash to finance our debt, provide our shareholders and owners a very healthy profit and invest massively into our team.

I simply want to watch brilliant football players play amazing football that win trophies for Manchester United. If that means blowing transfer fee records, so be it, it's our lawful income to spend.

Everyone loves a bargain aye?

Central midfield :confused:Mata and Memphis are effectively forwards in the formation we use.

Bastian can get 6 goals, Morgan got 4 last season in a weaker team who was less interested in scoring too.

Son's a good player, more than good enough for 10-15 goals in the Prem, but the only negative is that he has military service coming up soon.

Yet the second striker looks more advanced than them both! We will get goals from four players, LW, RW, CAM / SS, ST and then others will chip in mostly from set pieces.

If we are defensively strong then we don't need to be amazing in the goals scored, Chelsea last season won the league with 73 goals, they averaged less than two goals a game.

Sorry, no you're right in that I wouldn't say our squad is stagnating. Far from it. But I was using the argument that we should hold our position until the exact player we want is available - that's fine if you're of a level where you can afford to take that short term hit in quality but we are still teetering on the edge of top 4 in my eyes.

Defensively I think we're still suspect, although Darmian and Shaw's form has been a real boost. From an attacking perspective, I don't see how our midfielders give us more goals this season than last - Schmidfield aren't goalscorers. Fellaini and RvP weren't great but I have more faith in them than Hernandez or Wilson at present and, yeah, Fellaini is a brute when he's on but he's not going to bag more than 10 a season, particularly in a backup role.

If we stick with our squad this season and finish top 4 and make some progress in the CL then I'll be satisfied, if it means proper squad improvements next season. It's a massive gamble though.

I'm surprised Lindegaard hasnt been sold, unless he's injured and that's why he isn't msking the bench

LVG is not that type of manager he'd much rather work with what he has than seek a quick solution. You call it careless/crazy, he calls it belief in the squad. I'd say it's a tad naive to think what we have up front is good enough to break down prem teams, but he's the treble winning manager, not me.

.
Wasn't the idea to challenge, maybe win a cup ?

The team needs pace and creativity, Pedro would of helped with both of those and he isn't a striker.

Was it in Hernandez's first season when one of our main strikers (I think it was Rooney), who was out long term and Hernandez got to play most of the games, didn't he score over 20 goals? He's a goal-poacher in the classic sense and needs good service in the six yard area to score frequently. He is a better, more rounded player now.

The biggest problem of recent years has been the lack of service the strikers get. Under SAF we could make 20 to 30+ attempts on goal. In the last few Premiership games we've struggled to provide barely half-a-dozen chances per game. THAT'S what needs to be improved and all our strikers will score and the reason our strikers didn't score as much last season. More of the pin-point passing to Rooney (vs Brugge) is the kindda service our strikers need.
