No, but Pedro is better though
Oh I'd definitely agree with that, but he's 28, I didn't know Mane had just gone 23. I just always feel like we have far more success buying hungry young players ready to make the step up than established stars. Signings like Chicharito were better than Berbatov, Memphis will probably be better than Di Maria.

I guess I'm just saying I prefer it when we develop a player cause I think we're better at it then identifying the right world class players.

I kind of agree, lets see what happens

Pilib de Brún had a good tweet about the fan obsession with players exchanging employers that sums up transfer silliness nicely.

he isn't a bad player but Mane has a pretty poor first touch. Much rather we let the youngers get game time then buy another young player who isn't imo THAT much of an upgrade on what we have.

Our transfer policy is farcical and appears to have no direction at all.

Months trying to sign a player the manager apparently doesn't fancy, with Woodward in Spain 2 days ago to close the deal, as if signing him for a few a million less would remedy the issues. There has to be more to it. Bizarre.

Add in the constant pursuit of players who we're told are unavailable - rather than move on to other targets we seem to continually go back with the hope that things change, with no back-up plan.

If our plan was Bale, Ramos an Mueller or nothing than that should be it. If not, why are we perusing players the manager doesn't want. Seems obvious that there should have been an agreed list, with Woodward brokering the deals for players the manager wants. When one isn't available you move on or wait with what you've got...I'm not sure there's a plan.

Maybe they'll surprise us but it doesn't look like it.
Well i will argue the opposite. Our transfer policy i really good i think. We bought the important players fast so they went on tour with us and didn't overpayed.

The biggest weakness that LVG exposed all the time last season was a balance in the squad an lack of DM. We bought in Schweinsteiger, one of the most decorated players with so much needed experience and leadership, and Schneiderlin, one of the facorite players of all the premier league fans, pundits and managers. Tottenham and Arsenal wanted him but we were the one who get him.
Next biggest weakness was RB. There was a similar meltdown as it is now with pedro when Clyne went to Liverpool for not a lot of money but we ended with the better, more experienced player who was the best voted as the best player of Italian national team. With the player who got a lot of praise from the Maldini and similar italian legends.
Next weakness was our attack, we needed fast winger who can drible, score and is a center of attacking play and it looks like we got it with Depay.

I think our tranfers were increadible, buying just the players we need and selling the player that we don't need or don't want to be here, yes you can argue that we could keep Nani or RvP, but i think we didn't make many mistakes with the sales we made.

'And now when we solved our biggest weaknesess and didn't spent a lot of money (net spent) and we cut our wages down a lot we have the money for a marquee signing. As LVG said, we should buy just the players who can contribute and are better than what we have. And the likes of Ramos, Muller and Bale are clear example of that kind of players, we need WC players and not a squad players.
Ofcourse this kind of players are always hard to get but we need to try to get them. Liverpool didn't wanted to lose Suarez, we didn't wanted to lose Ronaldo, Wolfsburg don't want to lose De Bruyne, Bayern didn't want to lose Schweinsteiger either TBH but you have to try. For example Muller can decide that he don't what to play under the manager who clearly desn't rate him as mich as LVG and he will force the move and a club can't do a lot against that, when player decide that he want to go he will be sold sooner rather than later.
We already covered all our biggest weaknesess, now we should try to get that WC player. If we got one of them then great, if we don't then try again next season.

And Pedro is the best example of the player who is good but in the end not so good that we should spent money for him. Yes it is not a lot of money, yes he will bring some qualities that we lack but LVG needed to decide if he will go for the player or not. He looked at the players we have, especially young ones like Januzaj, Pereira and Wilson and he probably decided that it is better to give them opportunity and i wouldn't argue against that. They need games and if they won't get the opportunity their development will stall or they will go to other clubs which will trust their ability.

LVG is building a team for the future, a team which will challenge for all titles and i think buying 28 winger who is good but not WC is not the right way to build a team for the future. Rather give opportunity to youngsters who have a lot of potential, especially the likes of Januzaj and Pereira.

Yet probably 50% or more of his tweets are transfer related...

He's not the problem though - its a combination of social media, fan interest, and pressure on members of the media and social media accounts to draw attention to their sites/account pages, that are cumulatively causing this to happen. Pure human herd behaviour at its finest.

True, we rave about how good a manager Van Gaal is and how ruthless he is with players who don't fit in with his philosophy. The same applies to incoming buys as well, we'll only sign players who fit in with his style, and if Mane ticks the boxes for a player/position he thinks we need then who are we to complain.

He's had a season in the PL, settled in and done well too. Solves the problem that we have with the lack of pace upfront as well.

Might not be the high profile player we all want the club to sign but he's the type of player Fergie always used to buy. Don't see why it should be a problem when Van Gaal and Woody do the same.

I must be in the minority but I would be delighted with Mane. I think that he's a superb player. I think that he would surprise quite a few if he came here and would certainly offer us something that we don't have right now.

All Southampton are saying is that we never made a formal bid, looks like negotiations have been taking place over the past week. Looks like we're trying to get this one done quick

Mane would be a very good addition. Strong, fast and can dribble, plus hes sort of PL proven and is much younger than Pedro. It fits well with most our of signings, so far this summer. No real big names, but extremely talented players.

so what happened to

"i will only buy players who can improve the squad"

I don't see how mane is an improvement on what we have ?

Doesn't Woody's phone work? Perhaps he fancied a night out in Barcelona. Perhaps it was all a ruse...

I think Woody accidently faxed the bid and flew to Barcelona, asap; where he planted a jammer to block the transaction, whilst informing Barca that the deal was off.

He obviously feels like he will improve the squad?
More than pedro ?

I mean if we were following the logic that lvg said no to pedro because he felt he wasn't needed then fair enough, let Juanzaj or wilson get more chances to shine, but to choose mane over pedro when you've previously stated that mata and young aren't pacy or creative enough ?

This is why i think we just fecked up the pedro deal and mane was the plan B, We are breifing that a bid was made last week but southampton officials haven't received anything. ALl this lvg pulled out is saving face imo.
