I think the problem is that Liverpool can't afford to take that chance. How are they to know if we're really interested or not.
I remember that before Pool signed Firmino, the media was buzzing that we had agreed a deal with hoffenheim to sign him. It's all pressure tactics from agents and clubs to get clubs to up their bid or risk losing the player to a rival.
I think Liverpool know that they wouldn't be able to match the wages offered by us, even if they would be able to match the transfer bid. So they have to move quickly to get their player, and in the case of Benteke, the fear that we might go for him was very real, especially since we lost Falcao and RvP in the summer are clearly in the market for a striker.
Who is this idiot? Benteke has much more to his game than being a tall oaf in the box.

Sadly i think Benteke is superior to Carroll. He won't just stand there waiting for crosses, he'll run the channels, link-up with Coutinho etc better than Carroll could.
