Chelsea may not be unbeatable but we would still need a remarkable effort to top them this year. They are still a daunting prospect when it comes to picking up as many points as they do. We may have to wait until the year after, just like the last decade. But who the feck knows, we may be unreal this year...as may Arsenal or Man City - it's going to be much more open.

True. I know the media love to big up Mourinho and his Chelsea side but they are from unbeatable. Whoever wins the league title could well and truly be decided by the signings made in the next month or so.
It's an interesting one actually with Chelsea and Mourinho. I think that the media are right and wrong at the same time when they big them up. The reason for that is that what is needed to win the PL is toughness and durability above all. You do not need to be a great team to win the PL IMO in the sense that you go out and outplay your opponents like Barcelona do for example. Of course that does not mean we did not have great teams in the PL but I just think it is not particularly needed. You most of the time need to be tough and capable to hold the physical challenge away from home against those bottom clubs and 2 or 3 players to get you the goals you need when the going gets tough. As far as I am concerned, Manchester City played by far the best football and most authoritative football in England over the past few years (that was in periods admittedly) but when they did not marry that with that durability and resilience, they lost the league. Chelsea played nowhere near as expansive but if anything a Mourinho's team will have it is resilience so there you go.

Which is what brings me to our issue, Van Gaal could go down the route of toughening up the side and getting a couple of players that will get us goals. I think this would easily see us amount a title challenge but that's what we did between 2009 and 2013 and all it meant is being competitive year in year out domestically without being able to reach the level of Barcelona and later on Bayern. That could only be reached through working on developing our play and practising it week in week out in addition to having high quality players of course. The problem with that though is that the PL is so unforgiving that it doesn't allow you do that and Arsenal are a fine example of this. It is quite the conundrum which might explain why we rarely produce top teams on the continental stage and even when we do, it is usually down to their resilience and strength and not their technical superiority or flair.

30 tweets. Today has been very active.

Casillas leaving now makes sense if madrid are planning to buy that keeper with a similar. name.

Also alot of people here are underestimating Muller. Criminal.

Wow! A busy night!

Not sure about signing a keeper from Barca, we all know what happens there, but it makes sense to being in a promising talent if we're going to hold on to De Gea for the year. He'll have 12 months to come to terms with the country and club and then step in to Dave's boots next summer.

Wijnaldum would be a cracking signing for Newcastle. I'm shocked Koeman isn't looking at him to replace Schneiderlin, he'd be much better suited than Clasie for that role I think.

Try doubling that offer Jose and they might respond to tell you to piss off

Isco is going to be part of the elite in a few years time - already a cracking player

He was one of the top GK's in the world before his injury..
Yeh come on ! Let's give valdes a break . Ddg was prone to dropping a few bollocks (cc Sunderland semi) so there all human . If LVG gives him a chance surely it's off the recommendation of hoek as well .
I'm prepared to get behind him and give the lad a go if that's what we're doing .

Pieces starting to fall into place it looks like. Assuming we get one of Otamendi or Ramos as our big CB signing to go with Memphis, Darmian and Schneiderlin, with RVP, DDG, Rafael, Evans and Chicha out.

Still think we have a surprise move up our sleeve, probably for a striker.

Yep. Madrid would be daft to let him go. There's not many young midfielders with his technical qualities around.

It screams of Chelsea have been quiet - let's link them to a top young European footballer and get a few more clicks

No way he is leaving unless they got a completely outrageous offer

Are Le Parisien any reliable? I read that article (using translate obviously). They basically say deal is done and then go on to say: It should not be difficult to convince Manchester United because di Maria doesn't like Manchester and 1 more year will reduce his value. Add that United have got replacement in Memphis, other contender Bayern have got Douglas and PSG can include Gregory Van der Wiel in deal and so all said and done, his transfer to PSG is done & dusted for 60M Euro.

There is so much wrong with that article imo. We will be easy to convince? Try telling Perez that. Douglas is comparable to di Maria and Bayern will not explore should di Maria become available? or even Memphis for that matter is already an replacement? Also did they not get memo about Darmian before putting Van der Wiel in equation?

Di Maria may well leave but our asking price is 60m euros? Looks like bull to me.

PSG can do one. I don't see why we would sell Di Maria. Top attacking players with pace and gifted dribbling skill are pretty rare. Can't think of any signing to replace him either. We would be left with Januzaj, new signing Depay, Mata and Young in wide areas, which isn't great, and doesn't have one top player in it.

Depends on the offer IMO. With the weak Euro €60m is a no-go, try more like €80m. I think we are open to selling him at the right price, he hasn't done an awful lot to justify his transfer fee.
He didnt but I'm sure he'll prove himself this year. Selling him for whatever price after just one year would be crazy.

Those were my thoughts too but decided to post it any event as these rumours of AdM leaving won't die

I'll be honest, I'm not convinced. He's shown flashes, but only in midfield and he won't play there again anytime soon. He's been useless out wide which is a big big issue. I desperately want him to succeed, but ATM I'm sceptical.

The issue is who to replace him with if we get an astronomical fee. Players of his ability who are established aren't easy to find. And we don't need the money.
