Varane is ridiculously overrated on the Caf.
Tbf to him, I can't think of many other defenders in his age category better than him. Laporte, Zouma and Mangala were touted as the best up and coming defenders but Varane has been better than all of them. Only Atletico's Gimenez has performed at a higher level last season.

I haven't watched any of those guys this season, but they must have been shit if Varane performed better than them this season.

Honestly, maybe it is because we missed on him and people like to complain, or maybe is it because he plays for Real, but Varane must be the most overrated player on the Caf these days. He has great potential, but he is far from the top defender that some here think he is.

Laporte struggled early as did Bilbao, but picked up as the team improved. Zouma has always looked good when he plays for Chelsea. Mangala is a good example of moving young foreign defenders to the PL for big money and expecting them to hit the ground running. Varane has been error prone, but as someone has said because he is athletic he maybe looks better than he is. We need experience not someone we will have to babysit through an important season.

Not many people say that he's a top defender. But in terms of ability most seem to think he's the best young defender out there. I wouldn't be surprised if he becomes the best in the world in a few years.

All quiet regarding us which may be a good thing I guess. Does anyone really believe we will announce a signing or two before the team fly out to the US on 13th July?

We made the signing of Jones a priority over Varane. That was the mistake.
No, Varane was our first choice and he was close to joining before Zidane convinced him to join Madrid. That's when we made a move for Jones.

If we don't LvG will be one unhappy bunny. He won't want to be worrying about transfers while on tour. He said he wanted the main of the business done by then.

You'd certainly hope so because the big advantage our rivals have over us is that they all have stability. Chelsea's squad has had key additions but a settled core with a manager who has been there before. Arsenal are the most settled with few changes and Wenger being there for centuries. City too have not changed drastically in recent times. We on the other hand have not only had three managers in three seasons, and our current one being completely aliens to our existing playing style, but also due to stagnation of our squad are having to undergo huge changes now for the second season running.

Any extra time for new signings to bed in would be great keeping that in mind.

But of course, the right players coming in is still the relevant thing rather than the timing.

There is no reason to think we won't, the transfer window only gain some momentum when the players comeback from holiday, which should be next week.

I hope so, just needed my inner muppet reassured!

I still believe a target or two are all but done just waiting to be announced.

Simon Kjaer "Liverpool wanted me, but I want championships, I want to win trophies."

We signed Jones before Varane moved to Madrid.

Varane said he turned us down because we had just signed Phil Jones in the same position. We wanted both, but i'm guessing he didn't want the competition.

"PSG? The project there wasn't clear. The Qataris had only just arrived and it was all very vague.

"Manchester United? They had just signed Phil Jones in my position.

"My first reaction when Real wanted to sign me was not, 'Of course I will go'. I only made my decision when I knew that the coach wanted me to play in the first team."

To be fair, their was less competition at Madrid at the time. We had Rio, Vidic, Evans, Smalling and we just signed Jones.

He changed his tune, in his first interview for Canal+ he said that the reason why he chose Madrid was because Zidane promised to take care of him and because Mourinho speak french.
He also said that he had the offer from United but decided to wait after his exams(Baccalaureat), but Zidane called while he was studying.

Fecking zidane, won't even let a kid study.

Because Varane decided to take his decision after his high school exams.

You believe me or not but Varane gave two stories the second one involves Jones, the first one doesn't. I suspect that the second one comes from his agent and is a way of keeping the door open, by making it believe that it wasn't his decision but United's.
