Mount 55m
Onana 50m
Höjlund 50m

We would still need to sell to finance those 3 buys. And we would enter the season without a reliable no 9. City won't fear us that is for sure.
Our reported budget before sales is 100-150m so those transfers are very doable without needing to sell. Esp when you consider the amounts won't all be upfront.

But does he? Maybe I am biased because of how much he obviously wanted away, especially during the run in towards the end of the first season under van Gaal where I feel like he phoned it in massively.

Is it the greatest? No but this isn't a massive affront to a club legend (which I don't believe he is) this is a professional sports team making a decision in its.best interest.
Phoned it in? He was our POTY under LvG and was the sole reason we didn't descend into the oblivion even further.

He 100% deserved to be treated with respect from the club.

If this is how we have behaved against a guy who has been with us for 10 years, then we really have no class whatsoever. Not offering a new contract, that is fine. But if we seriously offer him a contract which he signs, and then we pull out of it - that is about as low as it gets.
It has nothing to do with our club. This is all down to the Glazier. We thought it was Ed but he is gone. And look at the process of the take over, these people has no integrity, no values whatsoever you can not expect anything from these c*nt. But this does not represent United values!

He might not be one of the greatest players at the club, but during the period after Fergie retired, he was the greatest player at the club.If I look back at the players we had in defense like Bailly, Maguire , Lindelof , Jones , Smalling etc , I cant think of a stable and decent CB partnership for him after fergie retired till we got Varane, Martinez.
I think everyone dislikes him for the recent blunders as well as the salary he is on. But he asked that Salary only after our wage structure went bad with players like Sanchez, Pogba ..
He felt he deserved raise and to be honest he did deserve at that time and we paid high salary to him only in the last few years.

The exact details aren‘t clear.

However if you want to be a big club you gotta act like one, and that means showing the door to players who aren‘t top quality anymore.

Offering him a lower contract is only reasonable: his performances have dropped off a lot.

No it's not reasonable to offer a player a contract that is lower than the contract you offered him a few weeks or a month earlier that he signed - especially as that contract was a lot lower than what he had before. To offer a contract that is lower than the one he got 5 years earlier - yes that can be reasonable - agreed.

This has nothing to do with acting like a big club - this has to do acting without class. Kinda like Barcelona did last summer

It's a business acting like a business. We're not a charity

Offers and contracts are withdrawn all the time in all industries. Shit happens

People go on as if United have made De Gea destitute, when in reality he can count himself fortunate that he's at a club stupid enough to even offer him a new contract at all

He 100% deserved to be treated with respect from the club.

He’s also been the highest paid goalkeeper for the last 4 years when in reality he’s not even close to being the best in the world. He’s earned an absolute fortune despite making appalling mistake after appalling mistake. At last the club is showing the ruthlessness it needs to actually move forward.

LVG left the club 7 years ago mate

None of us know exactly went on, yes on the face of things is it morally questionable to make an offer and then retract it only to offer a reduced version, but there is far more to this story, I doubt it is that clear cut

I'd say between the massive overpayment of his current contract and keeping his own personal goalkeeping coach employed for half a decade we have shown him more than enough respect during his tenure here.

I understand why its a bad look for the club but we dont "owe" De Gea anything, hes been handsomely paid in his time here. I don't really see how you can offer a player drastically lower wages and expect them to perform to high standards.

My view on this.
We offered this contract to David a while ago, we were planning to keep him as no1, but on reduced new contract.
He's delayed in signing that, and we have since made progress on signing Onana.
David has now decided to take our offer, and we have said erm this is awkward, but we can now only offer you a contract as a backup keeper, at a reduced rate.

It may suck how we are treating him, but there's no real nice way when we want to replace him, not paying 200k a week for a backup just to be nice.

I'm hopeful that this is more the case than a bait and switch. It's still indicative of relatively poor planning, which is a concern.

So who is that reliable no 9 we can get
I am no scout :).

Kane is of course the main target but too expensive. It is a pity that Toney is suspended but maybe we can try in January.

Rashford, Martial and Höjlund are decent options up front but they all have drawbacks.

His peers at other clubs are paid less than him and perform better. So how does the pay thing matter?

Oh the irony. Our fans who have been laying it out to DDG all season now feeling sorry that we've decided we don't want to keep him.

If that's our transfer business this summer then we are officially the new Arsenal from the last decade or so.
It wouldn't be that bad

Onana > De Gea
Mount > Eriksen
Hojlund > Martial & weghorst

All are clear upgrades. Although we could do with a more significant upgrade for the striker position

Wouldn't you both agree we need to be a little more ruthless?

Yes. But being ruthless isn't what has happened with De Gea, its laughably poor just from a human standpoint. He should be going, I want him gone, but christ if its true whats happened its just a ridiculous way of handling a player who has been at the club over ten years.

Being ruthless is not making the stupid offer for him in the first place when it was obviously the wrong choice, not going "actually babe we've changed our mind sorry xx".

All are IF's as we haven't transferred anyone yet.

Onana - let's see him in the PL and how he adapts a new GK is always a gamble as we've seen much greater GK's fail in the PL and even at Utd in the past.
Mount - I believe he would be better as a back-up rather than a starter, I guess we should be aiming at a better player there.
Hojlund - Talented young player but I don't know if he is ready to be our no. 1 ST.

This window is incredibly worrying. Assuming we will sign Onana at this stage and probably Mount. We will then have to sell to fund Hojlund deal. Expect the latter to drag on until the end of the window.

Not a good enough window for what we needed.

It will be a long summer for you if you think think the window is already incredibly worrying

We need another CB, but a CB plus those mentioned, and Amad think will actually be a really constructive window, not sure we need to be making marque signings just yet, need a stable team and consolidate our position in the league, it will be at least a couple more windows before we can push City

At what point are we officially allowed to start worrying about this transfer window?

Would it not be FFP which would require us to sell once you factor in wages etc.? I've (maybe miss-) understood its more FFP restricting us not actual funding, because as you say transfer cost is spread.
