United is pathetic at transfer dealings unfortunately. 85mln are crazy money for de Jong especially when Barcelona are desperate to sell. Not to mention Martinez transfer 50 mln. for defender playing in Eridivisie, ... shocking. Arnold has to go, I think he negotiate the player wages also, we burn money like no one else. Seems like lesson not learned and nothing has changed at Man Utd.
We can just hope ETH perform some kind of miracle with the team.
Been thinking the same lately. If we’ve been spending so long negotiating with Barca, only to get practically nothing but maybe a different payment schedule, we’re quite lost. FDJ moving after an «average» season considering his pricetag, without any discount really, when Barca have all the shitty cards… suspiciously bad deal. ONLY thing i can see holding us back, is FSJ can’t commit to us, because that weakens his hand regarding the deferred wages.
So why are there reports of United saying that they're happy that de Jong is keen to join them? Surely they would not be in it for so long if they didn't have such assurances from his agent?
I’m not quite decided if i think this is another Di Maria situation, an unwilling player pushed out and succumbing to pressure, at out loss in the end.
Or if it is just a negotiation play by FDJ since he’s owed deferred wages, and admitting that he wants to leave worsens his bargaining position with Barca.
Burnt child dreads the fire, etc…

Bloody embarrassing isn’t it lads? Silly Twats FC. I’ve been saying ‘just walk away’ in my head over and over for weeks now and to top it all off Murtough, and that pissed up fool Arnold, have both flown over to Barcelona in person to be mugged off by the Spaniards.

This has the haulmarks of Fabregas, the fingerprints of a Woodward/Moyes summer and shades of that rat of a man Di Maria.

Let’s just go for Neves or JWP. Both very skilled operators.

FDJ is worth every penny if we end up getting him..63m pounds plus 7m add ons!!

As for Martinez, I think we might be paying 5m over but when you are not in CL and options are limited and the club doesn’t have to sell….. u pay a bit of premium…

Key this year isn’t if we may 10-20% extra…. Key is to get the right players to help finish top 4 and build something from there!!

Point isn’t really if he’s worth it or not. Point is we’re in a negotiating position where we should have an upper hand. Instead it seems we’re wasting a month «negotiating”, and still end up paying pretty close to what they demanded all along. Unless i’ve got my cards messed up that is(@mazhar13 can probably refresh my memory regarding early negotiation prices?(and ajax->barca price?)).
As for your other point about 10-20% and top 4. We shold always aim for best «bang for buck» investment in players. Thinking we at any point do anything else is weird. FDJ might not work out, even though most of us think its a good buy at this point in time. If he turns out shit for us, and we also overpaid by 20%, its lose/lose. We should always get the best deal we can, and this time we should do better, imo.

They wanted €100m from the beginning, but the lowest that they could go was the break-even price that they paid to Ajax, which was the €85m in total. We've basically taken them to their lowest possible point in our negotiations. You can either view this as a glass half-full (we are making them get €15m less than what they want) or a glass half-empty (we aren't making them be uncomfortable) situation. Personally, I don't mind United trying to build good relations with other clubs around them especially since Woodward made us look pretty bad to much of Europe, overall.

Interesting tidbit in this article:

Frenkie de Jong's reps are trying to convince PSG and Chelsea to get involved.

What you call interesting I call concerning. It means he genuinely might not want to come here and we have wasted so many weeks negotiating.

Still if I remember correctly his agents denied any knowledge of Chelsea interest, that was all Barcelona pushing there name into it and I wouldn't be suprised if this is the same here.

It's understandable in this case.

You either choose to believe that reports of the players having zero intention of leaving or joining United are bollocks, or you accept that our new coach and boardroom team are complete and utter morons.

I'd like to believe the former, however 10 years of big Ed still plays on the mind

I was wondering when we'd be in for a right-back. Have never seen him play, but I'm assuming this guy is good at attacking. Having an attacking right-back would do wonders for United. Going forward teams wouldn't be able to overload one side whilst defending anymore, and that'd give everyone more space when attacking and also help Sancho a lot.

5 goals and 11 assists for Lens in the league last year. 2.2 chances created per game.

He is 29 though.

EDIT - Man is 30 in a couple of months!!

He's turning to dust before our very eyes

Actually think that would be perfect. It would give Laird a year on loan to come back next summer either ready to make the position his own, or not. Go for it Dick Arnie.

  • Barca must see the former Ajax man accept the offer ‘quickly’ because United’s ‘proposal expires’.

  • Barca do not rule out ‘pressuring’the Dutchman to go to Manchester United.

  • The Blaugrana will make a trip to the United States on Saturday and are studying the possibility of leaving De Jong out of the travelling squad so that he can resolve his future.

Pay the man his EUR17m!

Yeah, reading up on him now. Found an article decribing his role for Lens here.

I'd rather have a 29-year old right back in for £8m than not getting a RB at all, then we can look at longer term (more expensive) options in a different transfer window. In any case, at 29, he can still have 2-5 years left at a solid level. Van Persie also joined at 29. Having an attacking right-back should make a huge difference for us going forward, and if it can help unleash Sancho on the right, then brilliant.

Anyone seen him play?
Age is fine, a ready made player who is good for another 3-4 years? Sign him up! (.... if he's good)
Seen him play for Bielefeld against Karlsruhe in the 2. Bundesliga. He was good, sure, but unless he significantly improved in those two years or our aim is to hammer Karlsruhe repeatedly, I don't think he's our man.

Purely my impression by eye test, though

Age isn’t an issue if he’s good value and a significant improvement to our right back position.

Gives Laird another year to hopefully blend in, or at least show he can be consistently fit for a season.

Hopefully then means we can offload Dalot or preferably AWB.

Thank you. I know nothing about the guy myself, but his stats last season looks good and if he's called up to the national squad as well he must have something.
No idea if he has enough though.

Who cares - Andy Robertson turns 29 in march....I am sure he will annoy us for a few seasons more :) And besides - I would love to have a played called Clauss - so many good puns there :)

Can't pay money that they don't have. Unless it's for a new signing, in which case you can say the magic word i.e. Levers and money appears.

Maybe Frenkie has gotten the bug and is going around shouting levers at home which is why this is taking so much time

Ahh the great cyclical and patent pending caf freak out about transfers, were reality is but a suggestion and discarded instantly for a fiction of your own creation.

We've past the "just sign them, whatever the cost" phase and jaunt into the "we took to long and wasted the money" era with great glee.

How does this have the hallmarks of Fabregas?

That Summer;
Chase a target, amongst several , to no avail all summer before ultimately overpaying for a deadline day Fellaini. We also got zero money that summer from sales.

This Summer;
We have sold a player, bought 1 with 2 more all but done and a third, admittedly the primary target, that is dragging on but is effectively done bar the player deciding to forgo due wages from Barcelona. A solid 48 days before deadline day.

It only has "the fingerprints" in the same way, it has fingerprints, like we all do, they don't match that summers fingerprints at all.

Di Maria, is a little closer to what possibly could happen, but he was largely alright till he got injured, we then started playing him out of position and his house got robbed and it all went off the rails.
