So we are roughly £8m apart - i am sure that can be arranged
It's gone from a fixed 50 to 60 in 48 hours that's called United tax and if we pay it we have learnt nothing. 50 fixed plus a small bonus or tell them to whistle and had have a very unhappy player.

Could this have been a worse window?

- our main target getting played out in public for two months with definate signals he doesn't want to come here. Signings are just as much about effort/motivation as well as talent - a huge gamble now this will pay off even if he does come
- delayed interaction with Ajax over Martinez showing how desperate we are and them now from early reports demanding 10m more
- cannot seem to get a free transfer over the line within 2 weeks
- the lack of transfer activity now signally Ronaldo to throw his toys and want to leave
- even though we made a lot of noises about a reset we've only moved Pereira out of the club

All of this in an environment where we had our worst season in a generation and with a new manager crucially needed everyone in early to fix things in training with the full playing staff.

Lets not forget the embarrassment of being mullered by Brighton 4-0 on the last day of the season.

I wonder if Ten Hag has it in him to kick up a stink and demand a new midfielder when it becomes obvious that McFred isn't up to it? I do worry that he was picked be because he promised to work with what he had and save money.

A manager expected to improve the players he has available? That's outrageous

Unlike De Jong we can easily walk away from this one if Ajax don't negotiate nicely.

Walk on to the next target at the next club that knows how our window is progressing and how our fans are mostly losing their shit. Especially after last season, losing so many first team squad players, Ronaldo wanting out, reports of a limited budget etc. Those clubs, as is their right, will also ask for stupid amounts of money for x,y or z player.

From an outside view we seem to have zero power right now in this window and look like a desperate club. A club that has recently restructured, have yet another manager and have fallen so far behind the top teams in Europe. It is also being reported on a daily basis that we are balls deep in the FDJ saga, so a big chunk of the money is put aside for that potential deal.

To me it once again smacks of arrogance, incompetence and poor planning.

If you're Ajax why wouldn't you rip us off? They know we're desperate to reinforce and that our manager desperately wants the players he knows well.

We're not going to get a fair price for any Ajax player.

Insightful take right here.

It’s the same problem Dortmund have, it kills your reputation as an establishing club, a stepping stone to something bigger.

We sign De Jong and we have Eriksen, Fred, Mctominay, FDJ, Garner, DVB, Hannibal and Bruno as midfield options. Of course we aren’t signing another midfielder. For those banging on about needing a ball winner - maybe go have a look at Fred’s defensive stats - they’re exceptional.

Yes Fred can definitely work if paired with a technically gifted player like De Jong.

He can do the dirty work while the responsibility of being the metronome is on De Jong, that's where Fred struggled

And you know what Ajax have asked for ? :)

@FabrizioRomano

Andreas Pereira has just signed the contract as new Fulham player. No issues, deal completed until June 2026 plus option for further year. #FulhamFC Manchester United will receive £10m plus £3m in add-ons
Pereira has signed for Fulham according to Romano.

Excellent bit of business by the club

Instead of letting the likes of Bailly and Jones snooze on the bench we should have sent them on loan. Would have definitely been able to sell them.
I remember some club being interested in Bailly for a loan deal

Yup, kudos to the club for getting that sort of figure for him. Maybe Fulham are a club it's worth opening up conversations with regarding a few others...

Pretty much breaks us even on net-spend for the summer. Make of that what you will.

Don’t want De Jong.
Too much Di Maria vibes.
Doesn’t want to be here, inlove with spanish club, they try to force him out…
No thanks.
People don't get the legal games at play....

De Jong says he wants to stay and Barca say they want to keep him, so why are they both talking to MUFC? De Jong doesn't want to "blink first" and risk losing his millions in owed wages, and Barca don't want to be seen to force him out and weaken their legal position on the owed wages.

The truth is that De Jong is rightfully unhappy with being told that his employer want to offer him a huge pay cut, whilst recruiting their latest shiny toy. He would happily take his owed wages and come to MUFC. However, now that Barca know he is happy to leave, they are trying every trick in the book to avoid making good all the money owed to De Jong. Everyone wants this to happen, but no one wants to push it as there is so much more money at stake than with a usual transfer. As someone on here sensibly suggested, MUFC should offer the transfer fee up front minus the deferred wages, and they should take on the liability for paying those outstanding debts to De Jong as they fall due. Barca don't want this as they think they can get the full fee up front and weasel out of paying the deferred wages, and De Jong knows not to trust these wage dodgers.

That's every manager ever hired in the history of football though. No one gets hired on the basis they can buy an entire new squad (though LVG gave it a bloody good go).

To sell them you need someone to actually want to buy and bid for them, we can’t just offload them to a club and say here have him and give us 10M in the process

So to sum it up - FDJ either:
a) has a list of 100 reasons not to join United under any circumstances - or
b) he is open to join United if he can't agree something with Barca

:)

feck Barcelona and FDJ, he doesn't care whether he joins United or not and just wants Barcelona to pay him or whatever and also probably wants to stay at Barcelona. It's like FDJ and Barcelona are playing a game of cat and mouse and United are being used as a cheese in the mousetrap.

No my point is when clubs would see players like Bailly and Jones playing on loan doesn't matter where there would be offers. No one is going to pay up for a player who has barely played in the last 5 years.

Madness right. A large portion of our fanbase thought Ole was doing a cracking job though despite adding borderline zero value to any of our players and most players treading water or regressing. A good manager adds value to the sum of the players. EtH is the sort of manager who does that. Who makes the team operate as something greater than the sum of its parts. Thats why i'm not losing my mind about signings this summer. We will make a few and we will have a season with EtH for him to assess where we really need to upgrade and then we will see where we are at the end of the season. I just hope our idiot fanbase don't turn on him if things aren't smooth sailing.

Exactly, there are certain clubs that know that any proper quality players they get are likely to be snapped up by bigger clubs and thats part of their business model. They can also attract prospects that could head straight to a larger club and offer them guaranteed playing time along with the implicit agreement that if they develop well then they will be allowed to move on and the club won't stand in their way.

Why are we like this? I don’t get it
Partially ETH's fault perhaps, he seems content to play without a conventional DM like he did with 18/19 Ajax but I don't think he can do that in England.

not much point winning the ball back if he cant actually use it. most of the games last season when we were battered, it was the midfield where were bypassed so often, and the gulf in class between ours and the top teams was so apparent.

that MEN article also quotes a club source as saying : "Club sources have also noted United have four deep-lying midfield options already in Scott McTominay, Fred, James Garner and Donny van de Beek. "

if thats a proper source / quote, then the club is clueless.
