I know he has stagnated badly at Madrid but I wonder if he would have been worth a punt for us. He’s a free transfer in a position we really need reinforcement and was hot property a few years ago.
Fair enough. I haven’t really seen anything of him since he went to Madrid so was curious. His numbers have been really poor since then and opinion of him must be really low for Madrid to let him go on a free transfer midway through a 6 year deal.

Basically, Barcelona retain some of the rights to the player without Trincão necessarily having a contract with them. However, if another club were to buy him outright, then 50% of the transfer will go to Barcelona. Think of it as a sell-on clause.
This used to be very popular in Italian football with it being less common there nowadays, and this used to be common with South American footballers' agents/agencies in the past.
