The pressing need is to create a play style where we can impose our game on the opposition playing on the front foot. A CB with a particular profile next to Varane should be a priority if we want to implement a effective high press and compress/squeeze the pitch imo.
We need to bring in new Keeper as well or start using Henderson immediately to see if he can be of required level to start next season otherwise we can forget about progressive high line pressing defense it just won't work .
Just to Add I think we have another big problem in Varane as well he can't seem to keep fit.
I agree with what you're saying. But I don't believe we'll be able to fix everything at once.
So if we're to go by what Romano is saying and we sign a young striker, a physically imposing defensive midfielder and a fast CB. Then I hope we make those signings with a view to building the team around a set way of playing the game in the opponent's half. Not around any individual player, but around a set way of playing a proactive, attacking brand of football. And that to me is the most important thing we can do in the summer window.
So if the above three positions use up all our funds, then we should seriously look at integrating some of the younger players at the club. Players like Hannibal, Garner, Laird etc. And I think preseason will be interesting to observe with the aforementioned being involved in games.
But I think we'll sign 4 players.

Indeed, in midfield alone we’re going to need a DM and an adequate replacement for Pogba. Not sure I can stomach another McFred season.
There will be about 15/16 players heading out so I believe we must bring in 6 players at least. The rest will have to come up from academy and under 23s.

Not exactly rocket science, is it. Almost the entire United fan base could have come up with that.
With no CL football next year, we don’t need a massive squad…. Put all league cups and EL on the back burner and ask ourselves how many players we actually need to be competitive and Finish in top 4.
This should be the base for recruitment for next year and we than go back to adding strong couple of players every year.
Forget about challenging for the title for 3-4 years, build a strong base and focus on top 4 finish for couple of years while adding quality to the quad….. that’s all that matters …
So for 38 games in a year (I rather play all my youth in every other game that is not a strategic priority)…
What we need to compete? 18 players split in 15 outright for 10 positions plus 3 GK…
15 split into: 6 defenders, 2 strikers, 3 wingers and 4 MF….
Sell whoever needs to be sold and some we will lose….
Assuming we get the right manager:
Strikers:.If Greenwood disgusting act wasn’t there, I wouldn’t be against going in with him and Martial…Ronaldo and Cavani will go naturally, I will sell Rashford in a heart beat. So 50m or so from Rashford and massive wages free for the other 2… and use Rashford money to buy a new striker to go with Martial!! Net zero outlay!!
Defenders: I will add one solid Central defender and a good right back who can also step in Center if needed.
Sell: Maguire (dream), Jones, Baily, ABW. I am sure with sake of these 4, we can get one solid central defender funded. total outlay: 30-40m
Wingers: We have Elanga, Sancho, we need another solid winger!! Left footed!! So 50-60m outlay
Midfielder: We need one WC or Atleast in that category, with Pogba moving, we will have enough room in wagers…. So another 50-60m outlay…sell Donny perhaps for 30m or so and net outlay of 30m
natural outs: Mata, Matic, Lingard, etc!!
total investment 120m-130m plus funding striker through Rashford sale (I am sure there will be buyers)…. We can’t do anything less than that ..unless I am missing something….

To make many quality changes in the team should already be working and in many cases the signings closed.
And I get the feeling that United are late in a lot of those players.
Problem with us is, they leave it late getting a manager, so late with buying players. Get your manager, but keep it quiet. Get him to watch through the rest of the games. That should tell him who are the problems positions. Let him have a word with Ralf about who his thinks are the big problems in the dressing room and start on getting it sorted.
I'm not sure, most of our fans seem to be happy with us not signing CB and will then complain we can't apply a coordinated press high up the pitch.

Devils advocate, if they do go down and I dont think they will (though would laugh as I hate Lampard), who if anybody would interest you to sign?
I like Ben Godfrey but they paid so much for him I think he would still be too costly to be a good value signing, ,even more so with Richarlidson who also seems a bit inconsistent.
Two Everton players I do rate, the fairly obvious one of Calvert Lewin, but the one player who has always impressed me as a possible right wing signing would be Anthony Gordon. Crap haircut, but I think his movement and technique, work rate gettign up and down and his delivery are all really good for his age, one of the most under rated and under the radar plays in the premiership for me
All of those players you mentioned interest me. Maybe even Nkounko who's out on loan.
I think Richarlison and Godfrey would be my main picks though.
