Maguire plays quite differently when he's paired with Bailly vs. Lindelöf. With Lindelöf, he tends to drop off way more, whilst with Bailly, he tends to hold his defensive line more and doesn't try to do more than he should.

This is also why we're going for a new defender. Bailly won't always be available, and those below both him and Lindelöf aren't necessarily ready to step up so soon.
I understand the need because neither Maguire or Lindelof are good enough.

Neither is Bailly though, his lack of games seems to have people thinking he is better than he is. Tuanzebe has also put in a few great performances but also some shockers like Bailly.

Maguire does play different with Bailly, so does Lindelof.

We need a commanding CB with pace who can lead that back line (even if Maguire wears the armband)

This can not be real, can it? What on Earth would understand English football culture mean? What does the Slabhead mean by complimenting him? Not missing an empty goal from 3 yards? Not making 10 touches before passing forward? Heading towards the goal?
My guess is that this never happened.

I think United fans in general tend to focus more on our players' defensive flaws and ignore those of others outside of the club. There are several CBs who would fit that description but would then get similarly ridiculed or criticised based on the goals that they've conceded. I don't think any CB playing football nowadays will satisfy United fans except for Virgil van Dijk (even he'd face ridicule by our fans).

Don't get me wrong, I don't think our CBs are perfect or even among the best around, but we don't view them with the same lens that we do other centre backs.

That Varane mention has to be based on prior history, especially where Woodward's concerned. The Koundé links also seem to mainly be based on the Spanish media constantly mentioning our name. Personally speaking, I'd put Pau Torres ahead of Koundé in terms of United's interest.

There's this phenomenon of being able to learn a language. Someone page Maguire and tell him so.

I look forward to your synopsis. :)
Castles started of talking about Eric Bailly's contract renewal and how the Ivorian believes he's better than both Maguire and Lindelof. Castles goes on to say that the issue is that there isn't any meritocracy in the CBs role at United due to Solskjaer and United investing such a huge sum on Maguire and now he has to play.

Ian McGarry is the one who mentions that Maguire prefers United sign someone who understands the English football culture who will also compliment him. McGarry goes on to mention Ben White and James Tarkowski as two options who could be targeted.

I would take Castles with a pinch of salt due to the bile he spews a
towards the club and McGarry is even worse in that regard and is wrong more times than right.

Kounde wouldn't be worth what Sevilla would ask for him. We'd be better off distributing our budget across the team, rather than a large chunk solely on a CB.

I could see a summer consisting of Sancho (at a much reduced priced and lower upfront fee) Milenkovic and Ings or Edouard.

A few journalists have us down for singing a RB as well, so, like myself, no one has a clue who we'll go for apart from those within the club.

Yeah, I can't take those two seriously, especially McGarry, who comes up with some really weird stuff on many occasions. Both also tend to discuss stories that are reported by foreign sources/outlets without offering any additional insight (e.g. Ousmane Dembélé).

That meritocracy talk doesn't hold much ground, either, as it also seems to be based purely on conjecture and completely ignores what each defender offers.

I shudder thinking of a Tarkowski and Maguire partnership.

Its not that funny. We keep getting done on crosses and balls fron wide which English based defenders would be well used to.
If we had a defender who could head a fecking ball beside Maguire our GA column would be cut in half.

Yeah, see if it said "Maguire has indicated he'd like a partner who can head a ball" then it wouldn't be such a ridiculous idea.

FFS grow some balls and take some responsibility. Look at VVD - does he has a "English " speaking partner ?

It's as laughable as you could get. God help us if we spent 50m and get White now.

Yeah much like Amad will be pressured into being the saviour on the RW when a properly run club will actually buy a new CB and also take the pressure off the young prospect by signing a starter in that position. I am also convinced that Matic has gotta announce he is leaving at end of the season or we have no hope of a new DM this summer at all

You don’t half love a transfer moan Croady. Does it remotely look like Amad is being ‘pressured’ since he’s joined us, or are we just venting?

I know right, it’s crazy how teams outside England never learned how to cross the ball.

I would just rather we signed a proper RW because that isn't Mason and don't want a scenario where we still have a square peg in a round hole again next season, if you think this is a transfer moan then wouldn't advise asking my opinion on the shocking state of our midfield particularly without Pogba

he creates his own narrative then gets angry about them, its fascinating to witness.

The meltdowns are all a little bit premature.

You’d be right. No player goes in and says this especially in a game that is international
I think IF it was said, it’s a little out of context. I suspect he may have been asked for his opinion (not unrealistic to keep the captain in the loop) and he’s said something about making sure any new defender can speak English. Not an insult to any of his current colleagues but more from the POV that we are being linked to lots of foreign defenders and he wants communication to be key.

I agree! But why would anyone with this information share it with someone like Castles, who chose to spin it this way?

I thought we were done with the leaks when ole cleared the squad. Maybe one of his non-English colleagues took it the wrong way and was annoyed? Dunno. I’m just speculating

The leaks have slowly been coming back lately, the team sheets have been leaked consistently before the announcement

Castles and McGarry have no links with the club whatsoever. I believe one of them used to when Mourinho was here as they seemingly had some news on our ins and outs. Their show is 1 hour of them giving their opinion and not any actual reporting. Its beyond embarassing how few hits they've actually had. Its like listening to the Sun patronise the News of the World.

McGarry does have some links at Brighton. If we’ve enquired about White, he’s likely got it from that side. The rest of it sounds like an exaggeration. Is it that unbelievable that we would take a preference to someone with PL experience? Based on previous business, the answer would appear to be no. Agreed on the podcast in general, it’s complete hypocrisy at times.

Yeah you are right, McGarry does seem to have a Brighton link. He brings it up any time i listen

Relevant quote:
The project has always been to match young players with more experienced ones. It's been this way from the start and will be in the future. The team and I are convinced to still have a bright future ahead, with goals to obtain in the remaining matches, that's what's important.
