Agreed. We can make do without a DM if we sort out the CB and RW. Those are the priority positions.

I am fully in the CB & DM being higher priority than RW even though we really could do with a starter there, think a RW signing very much depends on how Amad & Mason perform for the rest of this season

I got you, but my point still stands: Pogba isn't defensively capable enough to keep us solid with one top DM. Real Madrid is a good example of this. They have two midfielders who aren't defensively reliable in Modric and Kroos who typically play with Casemiro, yet Real Madrid still concede several chances. They look better with Valverde in the team along with Casemiro as he not only covers more ground, defensively, but also has better defensive awareness.

If we had someone like Kanté or Casemiro alongside Pogba, we'll see a bit of improvement, but I don't think that it'll be enough. Instead of Pogba, we'll need someone like Barella or Goretzka i.e. someone who can defend just fine but also be a big attacking threat.
Ok so we differ on our opinion of what Pogba is capable of when he’s partnered with a top DM.

In my opinion when we see Pogba alongside the likes of Kante for France he’s capable enough to play that midfield two, with the added benefit of his great passing range from deep.

I’ve said for years that this is the only way to get the best from Pogba. To have a top DM next to him to makeup for his limited defensive capabilities, but I don’t think they are quite as bad as you suggest (so much so that he simply can never be in a midfield two.)

So in your opinion Fred and Scott are a better solution to Pogba and a top DM (like a Kante) ?

There isn’t another Kante around. The guy’s a one off and that style has caught up with him. He used to be able to do the job of 2 midfielders

I'm hoping my answer keeps this thread on topic.

Basically, there's a reason that we aren't getting strong links with too many DMs at the moment, and that's because the club doesn't put much faith in Pogba in a midfield 2. We've seen several instances where our midfield opens up easily when teams hold onto the ball and have a go at us. If we were better at winning the ball quickly, overall, then we'd see more of Pogba in a midfield 2. Otherwise, expect u s to see more of Fred & McTominay.

This will change if we get stronger links to more DMs or box-to-box CMs.

Just goes to show how time flies. Gibbs would have been a teenager when he famously slipped in the 2009 CL semi final at the Emirates and allowed Park a free shot at goal .

Yeah, end of the day even if Rashford on the right is annoying or the young guys aren't ready yet at RW, we have Rashford, Cavani, Martial, Greenwood, Diallo and James and there's the option of Van De Beek or Bruno in the front 3 (if we were still in Europe using him as a false 9 makes some sense to get another midfielder in, like Pogba as a 10 in front of 2 holders, especially if we had a DM).

At DM it's Fred, McTominay, Pogba and the idea of playing Bruno or VDB in the 2. Much less depth for one less starting spot in most games.

Upside and floor are higher at RW than at DM at present. We should have just secured Partey.

Bellingham if we rate him in a midfield 2 alongside McTominay/Fred is the interesting fit here, since we're well stocked at the best positions for Reyna, Guerrero and Brandt, though Reyna being 6'1 and efficient in the final third makes signing him as a long-term false 9 a semi-intriguing possibility I can't say I've watched him closely for. He does have a good deal of what you'd want from that role though.

Madrid suspect that Varane is considering not renewing the contract that ends on June 22.
If they can´t convince him, they would look for a transfer this summer with PSG and United as possible destinations
Other tweets also name Chelsea and Juve, but to a lesser extent.

Don't worry about that word in the Tweet. The article itself mentions that United are ready to spend big on a CB or a forward depending on who's available and United's situation at the end of the season. Basically, expect us to go beyond "considering" going after a CB this summer.
Might even prepare a bid for someone

Do you think he could really leave Madrid this summer and if so where is the most likely destination out of us and PSG

It's interesting to see how Sport Witness are dismissing this as a ploy by Marca to build some interest over this story.

Feels like we are looking elsewhere but will be interesting to see if anything develops
Spot on. I cannot see Real Madrid letting Varane go, especially with his cb partner Ramos nearing his 35th birthday. (Apart from rumours of Ramos leaving on a free)

Ronan must fancy giving Howard Nurse a run for his money, we briefed a month ago we're not looking at Upamecano anymore.
It's actually funny how he completely ignored Bild's latest report where Falk stated that United are no longer chasing him, either. I guess he really wants all of that attention from the United fans (as he always does).

It really grates me when journalists use our name, Romano is the worst, especially after the Sancho fiasco.

A year ago it was said he wanted to leave, to try new things, or perhaps due to lack of recognition.
I suppose it will depend on whether Zidane continues, Alaba, etc. and maybe it's just the club pressing him to accept the offer.
No idea about his destination.

*** BILDplus content *** Two surprising names from the Bundesliga! - This is Bavaria's secret shadow list

The 1st paragraph (only thing readable for free): With Hasan Salihamidzic as Bayern's director, the club have set up a shortlist for every position ("shadow teams" according to the article). One of those names:

That WAZ article that was referenced by Sport Witness yesterday included Sancho in an 8-man "for sale" list if Dortmund miss out on the Champions League. The list:

After the fuss they've made about Jude, Sancho and Haaland against us.

Surely they're not going to lose all their best players in one year if they fail to make the Champions League. I'm sure they'll be back in the competition the following season.

They're already losing lots of money even when they're in the Champions League, which is why they're open to selling Sancho next summer. Missing out on the Champions League would only exacerbate those losses, so it'd make sense to me if they'd sell more of their high-value players to make up for it. However, I do agree that they won't sell all of them. For example, Haaland's release clause will expire next year, and I doubt that Dortmund would sell him for less than that in the upcoming summer.

But they might consider selling him for same or more this summer if they need money now, plus Haaland probably not excited about not playing CL for a year when his hype is big and then expected to move a year later anyway.
For all we know he might even have something in his contract about his release clause activating early if they fail to qualify for CL.

On Ramos: Siro Lopez (of Cope), a journalist who's well-connected with Madrid has declared that Ramos won't renew his contract and will indeed leave the club. Ignore the fact that Fichajes is linking him to United; that's not the most important part.

If we assume that such a list exists and it does in fact contain these names, that doesn't mean that they could all be sold. It would just mean that any one of them could be sold - selling Sancho or Haaland for big money would probably negate the need for selling anyone else on the list.

Jonathan Tah in his interview:
England appeals to me very much. [The] Play style suits me. If at some point I notice that I am stagnating in my development, then that is an option!
