McKennie would be a clear reason to go after Kabak. The former looked nothing special at Schalke and is now bossing (slight exaggeration...) the Juve midfield.
Bayern themselves have alluded to two English clubs being in contention for him, so they'll still have to deal with some competition. So Upamecano off to Bayern in summer?

I watched a bunch of Schalke last season (this season, not so much, unfortunately). Whilst McKennie showed good dribbling and a willingness to cover lots of ground, his passing was quite sloppy and indecisive, and he had barely any defensive awareness. Kabak, though, looked assertive and dominant both in the air and on the ground with his partners and lack of a defensive midfielder often leaving him with doing too much. Not at all, I remember watching McKennie last season and thinking "Jesus he really stands out, could be someone United should be looking at" The rest of the team weren't on his wavelength at all and he was the only one driving such a poor poor team. As soon as I mentioned McKennie's name here he'd already was signing for Juventus and that came as no surprise to me, he was clearly a few standards up on the current squad at Schalke which is the worst they have had for many many years.
I've watched Kabak plenty of times and I have seen nothing to suggest that he will make it at Liverpool, I think he'll be very exposed with the extra spotlight on him also. He's not quick and he's not dominant in the air and has a clanger or two in him whilst defending.
Which source linked those two teams to Upamecano, recently? I've seen nothing about which English clubs are exactly linked to him. I'll do a search on Twitter soon.It was Chelsea and Liverpool.

EDIT: Never mind, I found it.
Why on earth are Schalke loaning their 1st choice center back with an OPTION to buy?
What does an ‘immorally good’ offer look like?
Because it's basically impossible for his replacement to play any worse than Kabak has this season. Why on earth are Schalke loaning their 1st choice center back with an OPTION to buy?

Schalke have financial issues apparently. Why on earth are Schalke loaning their 1st choice center back with an OPTION to buy?
Yes, but he has never been as bad as Kabak this season.Have you seen Mustafi play before?
Yes, but he has never been as bad as Kabak this season.
I don't want to blame him too much, as he is a young player and Schalke is in a downward spiral for quite some time now, so it's difficult. But he has been absolutely shocking.
