More risky than United aiming for 4th?
If they do lose Messi, then technically it should take the pressure off as the quality will naturally drop a bit, but if it drops too much it will be the manager and his players who cop for any abuse. He also seems to be shipping out most of that squad, it will take time, will Barca fans wait. For all we moan we have certainly got used to waiting for a title.

Yeah, despite the negativity here, we are definitely on the up. Not sure if you could say that about Barca.

This view is so stupid. Not every player on the planet is a United fan, it doesn't mean they won't perform like professionals if they join us. 90% of the players we sign won't be United fans but you hope that through positive experiences at the club they grow that affection for it.

I don’t think that has any relevance at all to what he’s saying.

Presumably the point is we shouldn’t be anyone’s second choice, and should only sign players who truly want to come to the club.

It’s not a great idea to be someone’s consolation prize and I don’t think any player should keep Man Utd dangling whilst they wait on their first choice.

Regardless of who they support.

Ole himself has explicitly said, he only wants players at this club who want to play for this club. It’s not just my view it seems. The likes of Di Maria should never have played for us, if they have a preference to play somewhere else then they should.

I mean, what's the point? He's clearly never going to play here again. Why don't we just sell him? Are we hoping that he somehow has a wonder season and we can sell him for a higher price? He's not going to get much better at this age and it's just another player we don't need on the books.

Did we reject offers of permanent deals for him?

If we were serious about him, should we not have had this wrapped up long ago? It’s fairly public that he’s available this summer. An approach triggered by Barca’s interest would again seem like we are reactive rather than proactive.

Then again, I know feckall but we can only judge based on the information presented to us.

If we wanted him then should have tried when the transfer window opened. If we decide now and lose out then Ed needs to be sacked. Incompetence like this should never be tolerated but we a business than a football club.

Yes, what we understand is Manchester United and Barcelona, but Real (due to Barça's interest) cannot be completely ruled out. See the message on our site.

Can anyone explain to me the £15m price-tag for Doherty or is there just no explanation for it as I suspect?

Transfer of a starting RWB between two direct PL rivals, in his prime with 3 years left of his contract, and the selling club with no financial difficulties.

Are they really trying to be nice to him just because of the service and loyalty he’s provided them? I don’t buy that. Villa clearly don’t give a feck about what Grealish has done for them given how much money they want.

If Wolves are really in this mood we should be able to get Adama and Raul for a combined £40m.

Jorge Mendes was apparently brokering the deal. I don’t know but something is always dodgy when he’s involved

Someone pointed out to me that he recently hired Mendes as his agent and is being sold to Mourinho's club.

Di Maria is different as he didn't want to join us and was practically forced. He was also excellent for us, whilst being forced to play as a sodding number 9 which was never his position, until he was clearly unsettled by the break-in. There's nothing wrong with being a 2nd choice if the player is professional enough, it's not like a player will misplace passes or take less accurate shots etc just because you're not their first choice. United have a slight dilemma in that the young generation of players are now less likely to have us as their #1 because we've been floundering and embarrassing ourselves for 7 years. Do we sign mid-table players because they're less likely to expect to play for current european powerhouses? Or do we accept being 2nd choice of players who actually have the quality to take us to the top again? Personally I've had enough of our mid-table signings.

A couple of Wolves fans on their forum reckon it's a payback for Mendes getting them all their class players for buttons a few years ago.
Certainly makes more sense than such a moderate fee for a key player who played 36 times in the league for them last year to a team they finished equal on points to.

Is Van de Beek actually good? He looked decent but nothing special whenever I have seen him
I thought that but watching him closely he’s a seriously intelligent footballer. Great attitude, Good engine, always looks to play forward at tempo, good technically and a great finisher. He’d be a fantastic option for the squad and at a good price and an age to improve too. Hoping it’s true.

Precisely

Ah that’s what it was. Thanks!
