So even if your Logic is correct (which it isn't - defenders are outfield players) - defenders in the modern game have a huge influence on the attack. AWB will start a lot of Counters by winning the ball more often - Maguire will play the ball out of defense with more accuracy or/and Power - and he will contribute a lot more at our set-pieces.
You can't Counter-attack if you don't win the ball - AWB and Maguire are 2 of the best in the business at winning the ball.
Yes, of course agents will wants their clients to get the most amount (regardless of who the player supports) but for United or any other club this could prove to be catastrophic. We're already struggling to offload shit players like Darmian,Rojo etc due to their wages, imagine this on a bigger scale with Sacnhez style wages.
I agree with you on the position we're in right now and I wouldn't call Wan/Maguire average but I agree with your point of needing high quality players but this offering shit ton of money model for players doesn't guarantee success either so for me there has to be balance of having few top players with young hungry players.

Obviously just speculation but if Pogba wanted to move and was told to keep his head down and they would work on a replacement and in comes Lukaku with his nonsense which seems to have strengthened united's resolve of not getting lowballed on deals. Thats probably had a knock on effect to the slim chance of Pogba getting his move.
