@utdreport: The latest #mufc offer made for Harry Maguire (£60m + £20m), has been agreed with Leicester #mulive [@transferpodcast, @garbosj, @DuncanCastles]

The initial fee is acceptable, hopefully it gets done quick enough so Maguire is integrated into the squad as soon as possible.

Pass and move football is more of a team dynamic rather than just having singular striker do all the movement. As seen with Lukaku and Belgium in the world cup you can be a stagnant forward and still adopt a system which is fluid, same as RVN under Sir Alex.

Im not really interested in having Icardi here but there's no one in the market who will offer us a better solution in his position if Lukaku leaves. If you take away Pogba's contribution, Rashford doesn't score enough goals, we don't have a Mane or Salah on the flanks to cater for his weaknesses. If we go into next season with Marcus as the only recognised striker we will miserably struggle to win games.

There are many, Icardi is least suited player for modern football. You need strikers who are good on the ball and offers more than just goals.

From Lukaku to Icardi is a downgrade. There is no point adding very limited player.

Obviously we need striker but it's not Icardi. Would rather break the bank for Wilson than signing Icardi.

Well Martial could arguably fill that Mane/Salah slot on the wings. Obviously not at their level right now but he does have a high rate of goals and assists per minute when he plays. Problem is our manager always seem in a massive rush to drop him if he has any sort of bad game. I'd have rathered if Lukaku stayed but seems like he's gone. However, I'm not really interested in replacing him with another striker unless it's a very cheap and proven one and I definitely wouldn't want Icardi (and frankly anyone who was criticising Lukaku all season but wants us to now sign Icardi is being pretty hyocritical). Considering the situation I think it's best to just hope Rashford and Martial thrive under their increased status in the team and then we can try out Greenwood and see if he can chip in with a decent number of goals off the bench. Pretty sure Pogba's going to stay now so it's not as disastrous as it could have been. Even a moody Pogba will be involved in a high number of goals. Best case scenario is him signing a new big contract, forgetting about moving and going back to producing the performances he was when Ole first arrived.

Closer to 4-5 days (official announcement was 10 days total but there was a delay for whatever reason), and got the price wrong (said £55m when it turned out to be £45+5m).

Ah. Ok, thanks. Probably just got lucky then with the timing.

£80m for slabhead. Ed's been taken to the fecking cleaners.

In all fairness if his bonuses are related to us winning the EPL or him getting into the EPL team of the year, it might be worth it. All things said, it's a lot of money for McGuiness.

Oh that's a bargain.

Nothing in football is a bargain, so that’s plain silly.

John Stones cost £50m 3 years ago and Kyle Walker cost £50m 2 years ago, all before this insane inflation kicked in.

Keep harping on about Woodward though.

Always perplexed me that people give a shit how much we spend when improving our team. Same feckers who complain that we don’t spend enough if we don’t sign anyone. We’re signing a player in a crucial position that will improve our first team, who is PL proven, it’s not going to be cheap.

Exactly, I don't get the moaning. After years of seeing calamity Jones and smalling surely our fans would be happy to have a quality defender but no, they're worried about the 80 million fee

As I posted earlier, United are going to brief the media that we only had to pay 60 mill, haha we bossed the negotiations whereas Leicester are going to brief that they got the world record fee they wanted, 80 mill, we killed it bla bla. This way both sides save face but IMO, knowing how desperate we are and how Leicester are in no need to sell, it’s 60 mill plus 20 mill in easily achievable bonuses and so yeah once again we have been taken to the cleaners.

But hey, on the brighter side, at least we have a new CB now and hopefully he turns out to be way better than what he was showing at Leicester because the Maguire who played for Leicester was in no way worth 80 mill. Now to top this off, a 35 mill plus 15 bid for Sean ‘nine PL games’ Longstaff and boom Brexit summer complete

We're paying £30m more.

I'd expect to. Fees have risen since then and he's better than Stones easily.

At the end of the day he's not come cheap and neither has AWB but if our defence does much better next season nobody will care.

Of which £20 million is in add-ons. The market has gone even crazier since the deals like the Stones one, who has at times been a calamity for both City and England yet is still a regular starter.

I bet City would want something like a £100 million for Stones right now.

The problem is not the money spend, it’s that huge sums of money is being spend in fecking average players. That is what we have been doing for some time now. Fred for 52 million, Fellaini for 27 million, Lukaku for 90 mill and so on. Will Maguire improve us enough to justify his 80 mill price tag? I don’t think so. The result of this purchase is If he fails and flips, no CB for another 3/4 years because we have already spend so much on CBs.

It's expensive but it needed to be done and it's at least affordable JUST, De Light didn't want to come and Koulibaly isn't affordable. If we were after a Centre half from out of the league say that Konate figure and he got priced at 60 mill it's easy to just move onto next target like Milenkovic for 40 million as they are both young and from a different league so you might as well reduce the risk.

Maguire is the right age english, prem proven and to a lesser extent a proven international. It's about the safest bet we can get for a CB to hit the ground running in 4 weeks time and improve the defence considerably. We just had to pay the premium and Leicester knew that too.

Who is realistically available out there right now who isn’t ludicrously expensive?

I follow brighton a lot so I've seen a lot of dunk. Considered a hero down at the amex but 45m is insane money.

I fully agree that there is no WC CB available but we had three windows to look for a CB. We Ghare been trying to buy a CB since Last summer. And after searching for over one year, Maguire for 80 million is the best we could do?really? Are there no better CBs in any other leagues? Even my 10 year old nephew could have suggested Maguire.

Knock on effect from the Maguire transfer I think. Brighton know that they’re in the market for a CB, and they have a good chunk of money coming in.

Exactly...and he's a player who has been voted as his teams player of the year at every club he has played for. Experienced central defender who will immediately improve our defense. Welcome to the club Maguire...

Would there have been this uproar if we’d spent £135m on Koulibaly? I think there is a huge element of under valuing Maguire because he’s English and plays for Leicester

Plus he looks like a neantherthal.

Hes a top quality CB. Something we need. Having a sweeper type CB in Lindelof will be the perfect partnership for his style.

So, once again we spend weeks in talks, only to pay what was originally asked in the first place.
You honestly have no idea how talks went. From what we’ve heard is we offered 70, but they wanted 80 outright. We don’t know but perhaps Woodward managed to negotiate 60 upfront down from 70 upfront or even 80 in total.

Alderweireld for £25m. If he’s happy to go Roma I’m sure he would be prepared to come to us. Proven in the league, would sort out CB for a couple of seasons. I can’t see the logic of paying effectively £80m for a player that isn’t as good. Leicester leak goals like a sieve, he lacks pace as well. The only thing he does has is he can come out with the ball. I don’t think it’s a terrible signing but at £80m I would expect Champions league proven players.

I reckon Alderweireld doesn’t fit the profile of player Ole is after (rightly or wrongly). He seems to be focusing on younger players with more to prove as opposed to experienced players.

Ask what we're paying our scouts for, if the best option they could find is Harry Maguire for a record fee.

We paid our scouts and came up with Rojo, Bailly and Lindelof (who had a torrid first season)
It's easy to say lets sign Milenkovic, Dias etc
Sometimes it's better to sign a prem proven defender.
