Of course it's a short sighted signing, he'll be 28 in September, same age as Matic was when he signed and look at him now needs replacing already and hasn't contributed to any success whatsoever. We need to dispense with the stop gap signings
How can it be a short sighted signing if it allows us to develop two young full backs for that position, who could hold that position for 10+ years?

Ndombele and Fernandes can work together. Ndombele as the box to box #8 and Fernandes the #10
Sorry I meant it in a monetary sense, could Spurs realistically afford both if Eriksen doesn't move?

And what happens if they don't develop? You've spent 25m on a player, you dont have his replacement already at the club so you have to go and spend another 25m (at least, far likely more).

That's a good point.. I don't think they can.

Wow it's now becoming apparent that there's something majorly wrong with our transfer budget, those 100m budget figures seem about right . One of the biggest clubs in the world my arse , we can no longer compete with the big money spenders anymore , what a sad downfall

We really don't have money do we?

Hard to tell at this point. The squad needs a lot of work but, as things stand, we don't seem to be particularly active.

Makes sense when you have owners who want to sell.

Hhhmmm I'm inclined to agree, actually (assuming this all turns out to be true).

As has been explained further up thread, cashflow is absolutely not an issue, so if we end up spending very little again, it can only be a directive from the board.

Well we will have even less money when we fail to reach CL again and our sponsor appeal starts to dwindle over time.

Why not? They can just use Cancelo money
Because Juve have operated in a very smart way in the transfer market for a long time without overspending on players. It would be a surprise if they broke the transfer record for a young fullback with only one season under his belt.

They definitely want to sell I'm convinced of it. Hence why only buying one player at a time.
I feel the same way.

Renewing contracts of old / mediocre players. Sanctioning one deal at a time. Rumours of sales needed before significant purchases. No owners can be this incompetent, it has to signal something.

Then you'd look at why two haven't developed the way they should. It's all if's and but's, signing another young RB when we have two at the club just doesn't make sense. What if AWB doesn't develop and we've spent £55m+ on him?

Odgen has been useless ever since Moyes left. Why is everyone taking his word at face value, I don't fecking know.

If there's any truth to this, man, Woodward and the Glazers are ruining the club big time. If only there was a higher power that could prevent these idiots from destroying the legacy of United.

Glazers have been ruining this club since 2005, nothing new.

Only the genius of SAF hid it so well.

What the feck? Why can’t we handle 2 potential transfers simultaneously ?

We can, we were bidding for Diop and Bissaka at the same time. Everything these papers are saying can be proven to be false daily. I'm willing to bet we have spent over £100 million net as well by the time the window has closed.

People tend to believe everything !!

Diop is not worth 60m... Buying from PL clubs mean we'll be playing around 20m extra on players. This tv sponsorship deals has ruined the PL in a way.

... when did United go on a spending spree immediately after winning the title? We didn't spend anything between 2009 and 2013 compared with our rivals.

Who is talking about 2009 - 2013? United last won the title in in 2013. It's the period thereafter until now that was being discussed.

Happy about this. Ole should have gotten sacked based on his performance since he got the job. With £100m plus the sale of some of our players, that should be more than enough to test his managerial acumen. Not many teams has a £160m player in their team and a £80m striker. If Pogba and lukaku wants out, that would still give us a warchest bigger than our rivals. Poch at Spurs was given much less to finish fourth and get to the finals of champions league

That’s the period of lack of investment that set us back. Particularly our apparent refusal to sign proper CMs. If we had invested even £30-40m more each summer during that span we’d be in an infinitely better position right now.

Bit expensive, but he was easily one of the best defensive right back in Europe last season. Would fit ole counter attacking football. This British core thing might work better than most realize

We have had a british core all this time. also, has AWB ever done anything in the opposition's half? genuinely asking because I don't know his stats, his defensive game is supposedly solid but I hardly hear anything about his attacking prowess. Football has changed, fullbacks need to be able to pose a threat going forward, especially for a counter attacking team...

We can't complain much about fees unfortunately unless idiotic. Woodward dug this grave with years of misguided comments and now our clear desperation to rebuild. Combine it with city inflating the market and we've to pay what we're told until were in a position where more players want to join us.

That is my concern as well, but he has one of the most successful dribbles out of any fullbacks last season. With that skill set, at least he will be good at retaining the ball, which is great for attack minded football. He may not be able to put in a cross like Arnold or Robertson, but there is hope that he can develop this aspect of his game since he is at a much better team and perhaps a different change in tactics. At palace, he honestly looked lost when creating key opportunities, but perhaps like Robertson, his game can develop significantly at a bigger club.

I believe not as strong a British core as it was during Sir Alex era.

As LVG alluded, solskjaer is a defensive coach. He will rely on the counter attack more than dominating the ball! He is perfect for Crystal Palace style football!
