feck sake, when will we ever learn to get rid of players who are not good enough. Even city done it with their captain Kompany they knew he was past his best and let him go, had he played for us we would have kept giving him a new contract until he wanted to give it a day.

He'd have been great at dortmund. We should have put a little sugar in the pot

Feck sake. I'd rather play Fred on the right at this point.
This transfer is depressing. When are we going to move on players who are no longer good enough ?

We keep rewarding mediocrity as if that's not bad enough we also defend it.

Young is a great servant and puts in a shift.
Smalling is a decent squad option.
Lingard is a local lad.
Jones counts as homegrown.
Rojo will be played as a DM.
Mata is a lovely blogger bloke.
Bailly.There's a player in there.

"Lingard is a local lad."

He's only 22 remember as well so a lot of potential. Exciting to see how he'll progress with Rashford who is definitely the same age.

Likely or confirmed exits include Valencia, Darmien, Herrera, Sanchez and maybe even Bailey.

That means we would bring in around 4-5 players without compromising depth. Given Ole said we definately aren't making as meny as 6 signings it makes to keep Mata for another season. He can be used for the Cup games.

I assume that Mata, Dalot and Daniel James will be our RW options next year.

James + Mata extension was presumably the backup plan if Sancho rejected us, which, it appears, he has done.

Feck sake. I'd rather play Fred on the right at this point.

Or Dalot, who actually played much better on the right.
I don’t know what it tells about Dalot and Fred, but 30-year-old Mata, whose running makes Daley Blind look like Kylian Mbappe, is still a better player than either of those two. Still, we should’ve got rid when we had the chance.

It’s a lottery for all mediocre players to get a move here, because this club is too nice and ill-managed to ever get rid of them.

Ziyech, Chiesa, Politano, Suso, Zaha, Thuavan, Beradi, Bernadeschi (long shot), Fraser, Douglas Costa

Also again there is still Pepe and I don't know where the he isn't interested idea comes from.

Also this is without me having been doing some scouting, I'm sure there are plenty of talented players who have potential though are out there also

There are plenty of better options than Mata, we cannot go into the coming season without signing a RW and playing Mata there
This. All of the above names is better option than Mata and better suited to our football. For what reason is he being renewed for? If we are led to believe we shall be adopting a high intensity pressing football it doesn't matter if he's squad player or not. Club is a joke.

It tells you that though they are physically stronger players, their vision/passing/creativity aren't on Mata's level. Mata can bring something they cannot.

Though most of them are better than our current options, they are still not the level of player we should be pursuing. I'd take Ziyech if the talk about a 25m release clause is true. I rate him and he's available. Zaha and Douglas Costa are probably available too, though Zaha is unlikely to want to return. And isn't Costa very injury prone?

Haven't heard anything about any of the others being available except maybe Fraser who I don't rate. They are very meh options yet if we get one of them you can be sure we won't be in for Sancho again next year. That's a major drawback of spending a fair amount of money on a "meh" player now. I'd prefer to sign someone young, talented and cheap like James + renew Mata for this season. Then break the bank for Sancho next season after we've hopefully secured CL footy.

If we want to compete for the title in a few years then we should absolutely have more than one good option for RW (right now we have zero)
Considering Sancho can also play on the left, then signing a RW this summer shouldn't affect going after Sancho next summer. If that the mentality then we should give up on chasing a title in future all together.

Its important to realise that our LW is hardly good enough at the moment either...

I don’t have an issue with Mata , he’s been decent but he’s the kind of player that needs to be replaced , I’d have sacrificed losing Jones , Smalling, Mata and young on a free than losing Herrera.

The powers above are a mess.

I didn't say we should make six signings, we can promote from within for cup games. Gomes can be used for cup games. Mata is weak and slow .Ole can't be talking about outrunning and outworking the opponents and still keep Mata.
I understand if we don't sign Sancho, but let us not talk as if Sancho is the only available RW this summer. Ziyech, Pepe etc are available. Even if we want to sign Sancho next season, we can get Bale on loan(even though I'm not convinced), have James (if we sign him) and/or Chong as backup.

Has anyone else noticed how Mata became even slower this season?
The club is batshit mental to give a renewal.
Offers absolutely nothing, give his minutes to a kid for fecks sake.

Please don't let the Mata renewal be true. He needs the boot. Make room for Ziyech / B. Fernandes.

More than likely confirmation we'll stick with the diamond in midfield next season with Mata at the top of it. I'm guessing he'll be used in the same way Lingard was vs Spurs with Rashford etc bombing forward and Mata pulling the strings. We'll get found out if we do use that tactic, as the intensity of our press with lessen with Mata in the team.

You need a squad you know.

Do we?

New RW automatically will take his spot.

RW, Rashford, Martial, Lingard, Lukaku, Greenwood or Daniel James. Why do we even need him?

Are playing him in central midfield now to take Herrera’s spot? Bruno Fernandes is considered to be an upgrade of him. Pereira & Gomes more of a squad player with less wages.

This improved contract doesn’t make any sense to me unless we settle that we won’t sign a RW.

Or promote some of the younger players to take their squad place. We don't need Mata especially not at RW

Gomes maybe. But there is next to nothing I've seen in Chong. Greenwood I am sure will be involved in most of our Cup games regardless.

Gomes indeed, along with James make Mata an irrelevant squad option taking up wages.

Of players who can offer something... Gomes should replace Mata is the "squad"

Gomes plays deeper than Mata. I'd Prefer Mata stay if we are playing a diamond or another formation where he can be central.

He shouldn't be RW.

Lingard, Chong should play ahead of Mata if it’s on the right. If he plays as a 10 that’s fine. But he won’t.
Lingard nor Chong are good enough but I agree Mata shouldn't be RW either.

He shouldn't be RW, no. I hope the contract means he will be a squad option at '10'.

I like Mata but the team needs an overhaul. We need new faces. I would have kept Herrera though if choose between the two.

To name Chiesa as a "meh" player...shaking my head...
I follow Serie A as closely as PL, Chiesa is the next BIG thing. He should be mentioned in the same bracket as Sancho, Felix etc. If and I bet they will, Juve sell Dybala this summer, they are most likely to bring in Chiesa as his replacement. Tells you enough, he is good enough to replace Dybala even at his tender age. Chiesa is the captain og a Fiorentina team that have indeed not been great the last few seasons, but he stand out every match. This kid is unreal and a proper leader, like De Ligt.

I would LOVE for United to sign Chiesa. Perfect signing, can play as RW, right inside forward, SS, #10 etc but prefer RW.

Damn, I thought letting Herrera go rather than giving into his demands meant we were actually in for a proper clear out. Turns out he just wanted a bit too much and most likely plenty of deadwood will be retained.

Lingard nor Chong are good enough but I agree Mata shouldn't be RW either.
No they’re not but better options than Mata on the right. Looks like James will be added to them options. I feel sorry for Mata because every manager we have had has pretty much played him out of
position.

I thought United were supposed to getting rid of dead wood not extending contracts
There was something the other week, that said whilst we will try and get rid of the deadwood, we can't do it all in one transfer window, as it would be too many players all at once.

So, we will ultimately retain some of the players for now, and remove them in future transfer windows. Or Ole doesnt seem certain players as deadwood.

Either or really

Fair point but keeping Mata when he can barely move nowadays isn't a great start

I understand that we can’t ship em all out in one go but just getting rid of one or two would be a start. I know it’s ealry in the window but at this rate United are going to be starting with exactly the same team next season. With young as captain

Valencia and Herrera are already gone, with one or two others (Darmian, Sanchez) likely to leave too. We're getting rid of deadwood, just not all of it at once.
