Can tell the media and opposition fans will only ever mention the £71m fee and not also mention the fact that he'll be half funded by the sale of Courtois. What Liverpool did with Alisson is crazier to me than this. They didn't sell someone to fund him.
On the flip side, Alisson has played 31 times for his country compared to 1 for Kepa. World record fee for a goalkeeper for someone who hasn't played in the CL or the WC.

It's strange but true. Honestly the only real negativity you'll see about Liverpool is from their own fan when they go into meltdown but they've been lovable losers so long the press just give them a pass and froth off over them. It's been like that for a while whereas we've always been painted in a bad light I think it's intensified 100x more since Fergie left and we started spending crazy money. But if we spend it's terrible and pathetic but if Liverpool do it it's beautiful.

Case in point:

Imagine if it was us

Our spending was crucified in the press after our terrible 2014/15 season. It was consistently mentioned in the press how poor Rodgers' transfers were.

Klopp's transfers have mostly been very good and we've been making steady progress without any sort of regression. He's getting noticed now because he's spent so much compared to everyone else for the first time since he's been Liverpool manager.

He won't get away with 4th and not winning anything this season.

How about 3rd and not winning anything?

Chelsea are responsible spenders nowadays, they maintain a healthy level of spending relative to their revenue. They still get slaughtered in the press.

I have found that Liverpool have some protection in the media that other clubs don't get. They haven't won the league in so long that some might just feel sorry for them or they feed off the delusional optimism from the Liverpool fanbase.

Man City were destroyed in the press in Guardiola's first season, now they are worshipped. It seems that Liverpool get adulation no matter how good they are.
Not playing tumescent helps, also having half the squad not hating the manager also helps.

Depends how close to 1st we are. 75-80 points and a 3rd placed finish won't mean much. Assuming we finish in the top four, I wouldn't sack Klopp but I would expect the 2019/20 season to be his last if he still hasn't won anything.

That sounds like a net spend argument to me...:p
Unlike many here I'm actually a big believer in the net spend argument. In fact, Chelsea are the sort of the kings of net spend currently when you look at the huge fees we've been getting for players in recent years.

On the flip side, Alisson has played 31 times for his country compared to 1 for Kepa. World record fee for a goalkeeper for someone who hasn't played in the CL or the WC.
Yeah, I agree the fee is unbelievebaly mad but I think context really matters.

The bumming of Liverpool by the BBC this summer has been hilarious. I'm not sure if it's patronising or nauseating but it's given me 3 months worth of chuckles either way.

25m for Boateng? That's almost as insulting as the offer we got from Barca for Pogba.
Given his age, injury record and the fact that Bayern allegedly was trying to sell him for the last 2 months, I think 25m is the right price.

This really frustrates me. Why can Real get him for £20m but English clubs have to pay 3.5 times more than? The playing field is grossly uneven.

Because he signed a new contract with a higher release clause in January.

You really need to win a trophy this year, all that money and no silverware will get old fast.

Ah yeah, I forgot to get the handbook on my way in about Liverpool being the standard for footballing excellence

Man City played far better than Liverpool in 16/17, Man City got slaughtered because Guardiola is that type of man to expect to win everything.

Klopp is not a winner and Liverpool haven't been true winners since 2005. That's why they get an easy ride in the press. Has nothing to do with quality of football which has been average for most of the time post-Benitez.

Yeah I agree, but not winning anything and finishing 3rd/4th wouldn't be enough for me to want Klopp sacked.

Sorry I'm turning this into a Klopp thread.

71 million pound on four letters? Ridiculous.

He didn't play a league game for them before this season.

I'm not saying that makes him a bad signing for Liverpool or Kepa a good one for Chelsea (although I do think both will succeed) and they're both, from what I gather, fine keepers, but neither has played a substantial amount of league football and neither are what I'd class as hugely experienced. Acting like Alisson is a better signing because he is substantially more established than Kepa (although I take the point about Brazil) seems awfully like trying to fit the facts to the narrative – they're both keepers being signed on talent rather than their experience.
He was their cup GK that season. He had already started for Brazil around then too. He was highly regarded from Brazillian league, and youth tournament too.

The point is not comparing Alisson for the best GK in the world status. It's the comparison of experience with Kepa which Kepa being a Basque means he's at advantage at Bilbao to be pushed forward playing football, while Alisson was held back by the coach decision at Roma in first season.

Nevertheless, it has been a frustrating end to the transfer window for the club with the prospect now that they may be unable to make any signings before the Thursday 5pm deadline that has proven such a problem for clubs such a United and Tottenham Hotspur.

Well, great. Know it already.

I'm happy. This transfer window will confirm De Gea's stay at the club!

He will retire here and become the legend he deserves.
