I don't get the complaining over Maguire. We need a ball playing CB to help our midfield and he's a clear upgrade on Jones/Smalling/Rojo. If the rumours are true and spurs are quoting us £50m for Alderweireld then I'd much rather put the 50 towards Maguire given his age and ceiling. It's a smart move.

I'm sorry, but this is nonsense. It's akin to blaming the CEO of Tesco for the check out boy at your local express being rude to you.

They have a whole team beneath them, so if which are trusted to do their jobs, and to employ the correct people beneath them.

Jose chooses the players along with the scouting staff, and Ed buys them.

In reality we have no idea at all who any of our targets have been, what prices are really being offered or asked, or how negotiations have gone.

Ed's main job is commercial and he's one of the best in the world at it, so he's not going anywhere anytime soon, and nor should he.

You simply can't blame the Glazers for the squad, they don't choose the targets or how much we'll spend on them, they have no part in the negotiations. They simply set a limit of spending for each year, which as pointed out is a very healthy amount

Good post.

Getting very worried as the start of the season edges closer. We need one or two big players who can come in with an immediate impact. Unless we get some signings soon we're never gonna compete for anything this season.

Jose is too stubborn i feel, he's been poor so far with his style of play - boring and defensive.
Surely he can't go through another season with this approach, praying he doesn't.

There was zero spending from when they arrived until Fergie left and shit hit the fan. The squad we've had is largely on them since we should have been looking to strengthen key areas every summer rather than trying to get blood out of a stone with Scholes/Giggs and playing Cleverly in midfield. If they had invested correctly we wouldn't be in this mess.

Surely we don't want them to be like Abramovich where he just buys who he wants and not who the manager asks for? We know what Fergie was like in the transfer market. I can entirely believe that he left the squad in the state it was in when he left because he felt they were good enough, rather than because he wanted to spend the money but they never let him.

I don't know how anyone can remain optimistic with the manager putting out quotes like this. Has to be at least one of the following:

1. Glazers are starting to penny pinch
2. Woodward is ignoring the wishes of Jose and going after his own names
3. Jose is being a miserable, petulant child

My money is on a mixture between 1 and 2.

Because 3 is a given I presume.

Its because fans are trying to have their cake and eat it. They'll cry about our reckless spending and demand a DOF but the expect us to have massive overhauls next year.
I'm not surprised Jose is backing the players that he's already brought in. Our misfield and attack bar the right wing will be all Jose signings next year. There's a consistency to it that fans demanded and that's what we have.
I think we'll sign a CB and maybe a LB after we sell Martial but I wouldnt be surprised to see Delot (sp) rotating with our FB on either side for game time

Blaming the Glazers still? It's been 5 years and we've spent a crap ton of money. It's the coach's fault that we aren't anywhere near good enough atm. It's all shaping up to be a disaster of a season.

There is no chance it's 2. It's either or both 1 & 3. This myth that Ed buys is own players needs to stop.

Jose's moronic plan to sell Martial so he can sign a 30 year old Perisic is full steam ahead

Too late to do in this window in my opinion. Less than 3 weeks left.

They need to explain this to him and get him motivated for the new season both for his sake (to attract suitors) and the club's.

Whilst I partly agree we were still winning the title or finishing a close second with little investment. Why would the Glazers invest more with those results?

Glad to see Jose throw that line out again, whenever he does, it means a signing is right around the corner.

Last nights briefing suggests Maguire is close, but we probably need rather more than him to close the gap

At what point do fans stop peddling this stuff? When another billion is spent? At this point the glazers have spent enough money post-fergie to find the takeover of a small country. The fact that it’s been by and large misspent is down to the choices of the twats we’ve had as managers

Let's see. Martial wants to leave and there's interest from several clubs. We'd be able to get our money back on someone who has never been happy here and has never fulfilled his promise. Someone who has been one of the worst players on the pitch in pre-season. Why would we keep him here? It's obvious that he's never going to renew his contract so even if he does play well this season and the next, he's still got an expiration date. Right now at least we can still get some money for him. I hope we get rid of him and get someone who actually wants to be here. Preferably a RW.

Don't mind us getting Maguire instead of Alderweireld either. They're similar types but Maguire is both English and younger. If they cost the same, go for Maguire. Still need to get rid of someone else though.

The club really lacks a DOF and a clear vision of how we want to play as a team. Hire a manager and a DOF that fits the vision and get more continuity. If the manager gets sacked the new manager coming in won’t have to change the whole squad.

Also the Glazer increased the wage budget almost immediately and when you put the amounts in context we spent a fair amount during the first 5-6 years after the takeover. The amounts spent on Rooney, Ronaldo, Tevez, Hargreaves, Nani, Berbatov and even Carrick weren't small amounts at the time.

But it's also down to them not having a clue where the club is going, no strategy or vision. First it was Moyes football, then a complete turnaround towards "possession" with LVG, then back to bus football with Mourinho. There's a huge void between the manager position and the CEOs. SAF was able to fill that void but he was a proper manager. Now it's directionless stuff.

How do you know its a myth? It's well known that Woodward loves to chase big names.
He wants top quality established names but only if the manager wants them too. He is .ot going to sign a player without the managers permission.

Or maybe it’s as simple as being that Jose’s preferred targets are not available and we simply have to go for backup options?

We seem to look for conflict in every comment he makes but I highly doubt there’s any more to it than it being a case of the players he wants aren’t always available for whatever reason.

Two concerning quotes.
Jose saying that after coaching the players for 2 years is my biggest concern.

The top quote he was talking about the team he has in US. He says they are first team players, u23 players, u18 players, some back from loan some who are going on loan plus those who are not there who are important so it’s not a quote to be dramatic about but factually correct.

The club is the most profitable worldwide. Fans are pissed off because the Glazers put the club into debt of a billion pounds and aren't seen to be investing according to our wealth. We have been outspent by city each year for the last 10 seasons. City have 40m player for each place in the 11. And you're seeing the result. Now Liverpool are doing the same. If fans are happy finishing behind these two, fine .I'm not. I think we deserve better and it's time the Glazers paid back some of the billion they stole from this club.

Jose Mourinho: "We are not a team. We're a group of players from different teams."

On transfers : "One thing is what I want and another thing is what is going to happen,"

This is worrying.

Right, you know what, feck this - lets just the write the season off already. The latter, fair enough, but the former quote is very much 100% on Jose Mourinho the MANAGER of our team.

What a joke.

If Maguire is that good why didn't we buy him last year when he was available for 16 million? It's not like he only developed his skills in the past 12 months. Horrible business if we pay 50-60 million for him now just because he had a few good World Cup games when he was a fraction of the price when Leicester bought him.

We scream and cry profusely. Why?
Nothing, it's just funny to see people throwing out caps and rage texts over a tweet that sounds a bit trollish from Jose, one which is a bit unclear as well. Imagine them being really angry in real life... clenching their fists and then breathing really heavily while typing really fast on their keyboard.

Or maybe I'm just too imaginative.
