From Real's bench to City's.

Not necessarily. He could replace Fernandinho in their starting XI and play quite a lot. He's also the perfect midfielder for Sarri at Chelsea. He could replace Fabregas. If he really cares about his minutes, that's probably where he should go. Not that I want to see that happening.

I defend Mourinho with most stuff but I went into the summer thinking we'd be ruthless... And we're the exact opposite.

I think we're going to end up well short again. The only saving grace will be if he gives youth plenty of chance. I hope to god Dalot shines and Luke Shaw finally pulls his finger out, because it's going to frustrate me if our full backs struggle again, particularly in an attacking sense.

He definitely wouldn't replace Fernandinho. He's more suited to De Bruyne/Silva's role than Fernandinho.

Chelsea, if they don't go in for Golovin would be a decent option for him, as you said.

It’s a disgrace. Things like this really make me question the direction of the club. In a year Maguire hasn’t transformed into a much better player, he was at a similar level last summer, yet we are going to pay about £50m more.

This is all just rumours guys...

100% agree on the bold.

I don't want to call Jose an idiot, but what would you call someone who wanted to spend money on three CBs in three seasons and not even give so much of a hint at selling one of the current roster. Let alone give one of the underperforming CBs a new contract just as he was coming off a long injury layoff?

I seriously think the board are witholding funds from Jose because of the colossal feck up he caused with the Sanchez deal. First he ships out Miki (which was fair enough as long as Sanchez was coming in to replace his position on the pitch - obviously we now know that wasn't in his plan), then he unsettles Martial who was actually performing and looking happy, and finally his massive wages have caused the rest of the higher earners to become unsettled also.

I think they're waiting to see what happens with the squad Jose has currently assembled, and then take it from there. Fwiw, I think he'll be a dead man walking by Christmas.

Looking forward to the season? Wow.

He's played quite a few times in Casemiro's role, when the Brazilian was rested. He did very well there, especially in 2016/17.

I don't get why they want to sell Pjanic.. This is the kind of deal that Utd should be all over.

Cash in while he still is valuable due to his age. Juventus could be the most logical destination for Kovacic and he could replace Pjanic.

How is that Mourinhos fault? He doesnt do the transfers

Agree. Jose is the type of manager who needs maximum backing to deliver maximum results. If Ed was planning to revert to the "no value in the market apart from Bale" strategy, we should have hired someone like Nagelsmann, Jardim or Sarri. Ridiculous that a club of our size can't spend without having to sell.

Eh? Not really. We are not state funded and have to manage our wage bill. It's ridiculous to think this is football manager. I am glad my club is run properly.

2.5 weeks before start of the season and this is the first proper United tweet transfer to come since a while. I think it's official time to panic. Things aren't looking good at all tbh.

Looking forward to the season? Wow.
I'm trying to be optimistic, and if you have read my other posts, particularly in the next season chances thread you'll see I have done and I can see plenty of positives with the squad.

My issue is that I just can't see Jose getting on with the job at hand with the squad that HE assembled. He's had two years now and the LVG players excuse has no validity. Especially since he played Smalling and Jones regularly in defence and decided to give Rojo a new contract.

As it stands, we're not looking likely to bring anyone in and if we do, it's going to be a mad scramble and will just be an act of desperation like 2014 was when we had our bad start under LVG.

Why do people believe this stuff? Seriously, I want to know why people take this stuff as fact?
It's the caf way. If it's negative the world is ending and it's all *insert that seasons United scapegoat*'s problem. If it's positive, journalists are useless hacks anyway. Rinse, repeat.

Woodward is full of puke - what was the point in renewing Jose's contract last season if we're not going to back him in the transfer window?

How do you know he's not being backed? Not sure as to the logic behind this.

I can't believe we look like going into the new season with Young and Valencia as our fullbacks.

And Shaw and Dalot...

The article says we won't pay the money for Sandro, not that we aren't looking at full backs by the way.

If Martial went to another club and was brilliant I’d love to see the Mourinho backers try and explain it.

I'm a Jose backer and I believe Martial should be allowed to leave if he wants out. As long as we get a proper winger - I'd be happy with that.
If Martial tears it up at the other club (which I doubt he would - every player who has left us, has faded away) It would be very difficult to explain away.

The signings we've made so far don't seem like the board are fully backing him, Dalot and Fred are not enough for a title challenge. Things may change of course but at present it doesn't look like a good showing.

It's even annoying. Why is it a LB or a CB? You get the feeling we are making it up as we go along.

I get the feeling the press is making it up as they go along.

All this Jose isn't being backed guff is daft. We don't know who we've gone for behind the scenes and simply failed to get based on factors that aren't purely to do with money.

It's baffling he's yet to buy an established fullback in 3 summer windows. We could even potentially sell Darmian to Juve and not include Alex Sandro in the deal. Stockpiling on centre backs and then dropping/not giving chances to the ones he's bought. No right winger either. The squad is so unbalanced it's unreal. If Martial leaves it'll be the final nail in the coffin. We are in enough trouble as it is right now. Something is definitely not right between board and Mourinho. We showed more ambition in the market when we were out of CL and entering EL than now.Attracted Pogba, attracted Ibra etc.
I can only assume that Jose sees full backs as a low priority position where money can be saved - just stick anyone there, even if they’re not actual fullbacks. Which seems outdated thinking to me.

It’s possible that we are just motivated by money and want a team to finish top 4. Our busiest Summer’s have been when we are out of the top 4. For once we finished in the top 4 comfortably so they’re happy with that.

Certainly not happy with the fact we’ve had such a quiet Summer when we finished second only to Man City last season so if we properly strengthen who knows where we could go? Every Summer is crucial but this one in particular is.

They haven't got a clue! we will sign someone out of the blue tomorrow and they will try to convince people they knew all along . Man easy money to talk shite

Mourinho has absolutely nothing to do with it. The power and process is with the board. He does not do the negotiations even if he wanted to. It’s the same at all other clubs at this level.

I agree with the other points you make.

Ivanovic was getting skinned for a long period of time and we had Azpilicueta playing LB and Filipe Luis on the bench! That’s exactly what Mourinho thinks of the position. There’s a longish history of him playing people out of position there.
