As Shaw would be the first choice, I would hope when he is fit. I would presume it would be an experienced backup.

Don't think that'd stop Rodriguez from signing for us.

Rodriguez is 22 and only getting better, there's no way he's coming here to play second fiddle to anyone. It would make sense if we did not already invest in Shaw or if Rodriguez could play both fullback positions but he doesn't.

Well, all I said was that just because Wolfsburg are still in the CL, it doesn't mean he'd refuse a move to us. I agree that he's way too good to be a back-up, but he might fancy his chances of securing the position as he's a quality player.

Yeah, we'd have to go either either for a left back that is much older and hence in a different stage of his career, or one that is clearly going to be backup. Because I don't see anyone displacing Shaw from the LB position at United in the near future.

Rodriguez is world class and would never accept a back-up role for Shaw. He didn't shine this season because he has been often injured and clearly suffered from the death of his Mom.
Rodriguez is excellent, could become the best full back in the world in a few years, as much potential as Shaw and attacking-wise he's insane. He could probably cover at right back if needed and we might even train him there once Shaw has recovered.

Rodriguez won't move in January. First of all Wolfsburg won't sell him. Secondly, he wants to play the Euro 2016 and is a guaranteed starter if fit. There's zero point in moving. Thirdly, Real Madrid have been interested in him for years, and IIRC he has an exit clause for the summer so we can expect clubs battling for him with top offers in the upcoming months. Considering that his parents are from Chile, he may like the idea of playing in Spain.

"Van Gaal was overheard saying he was not particularly impressed with Vardy's performances over the first half of the season but his recent form has been very pleasing and lines up perfectly with his philosophy."

Lol, so what has he done that has impressed Mr van Gaal ? Kept the ball ?

Yes!! Like a new signing!

Which one? Obertan or djemba djemba?

Hes not the answer to our woes. In an attack already reliant on martial and memphis, another inconsistent teenager finding his feet is the last thing we need.

None of them are teenagers.

Agree completely. We need a top class winger and striker. They are going to just use him and Will Keane. United is turning into a madhouse presuming the top notch players will join in the summer. Arrogance right from the top. If we don't get Top 4, why would someone join us when other clubs have taken on top managers and we might be yet another project with Giggs. We are turning into a Loadsamoney club, all talk but no substance. They need someone to go into that boardroom and bang a few heads together. No idea who, me likely.

Really weird that some would love to see us sign Rodriguez which'd basically push Shaw out of the club. Yes, Rodriguez has the bonus of being great from set pieces but I'd rather see us stand by Shaw and if we were to sign a leftback (we've already got enough options there even though most are injured right now), I'd prefer to see someone who wouldn't have a big problem with being a squad player. Rodriguez would most likely cost at least £40M anyway as Wolfsburg don't need to sell.

I think we've made do at that back thus far and should continue to do so until Shaw is back. We seriously need to get a couple of signings in our attack though, that's where we are falling short.

Can see this thread being very long with nothing at the end of it.
If there's no value in the market it would be just wise to not do more than cancelling Januzaj's loan. Many clubs won't sell even if a player may be willing to move, and many players won't want to risk their nomination for the Euro 2016.

That's true, but a few will be desparate to salvage it, a la Mata in 2014. Chances are those types of players won't be good enough though (not saying Mata falls into that category before people jump on me).

Wolfsburg won't sell this winter. In summer though Rodriguez' exit clause is something around €25m IIRC.

That's the issue when you need quality from the start. I'm still convinced though that if there's no top notch player you could get now, it's wiser to refrain from buying one just for the sake of buying. Actually I'm convinced if LvG was flexible enough to play a system that suits your players rather than imposing his philosophy on them that seems to be holding them back, you shouldn't have to worry about coming in top 4 with the players you already employ.

Rodriguez signing won't make sense, at all. He is already on a different level to Shaw.

Ighalo says he would be happy with Man United move. I would take him

I predicted a few months back that we won't buy anyone of significance, in January.
The only thing that could change this is if LVG thinks his job is on the line and he panic buys (same way that Moyes did with Mata).
Basically LVG is after Galacticos and these are not available in January.
I do see where he is coming from. I mean, if Mata, Rooney, Memphis, Martial are scoring 1 goal per game - a lesser player won't make any difference.

There are better players than these in their positions (Mata RW) that are accessible in January, the Galactico excuse doesn't wash

I couldn't be arsed checking their exact ages and knew some pedant would correct me. I'm still 100% right about them being unreliable and Januzaj only adding to that issue. I notice you failed to respond to that.

And to be honest, martial aside, the other two may as well be 15 with the attitudes and temperaments they seem to have.

Who have you got in mind?

Who have you got in mind?

I would take Berahino/Ighalo as squad players (back up challenge to Rooney - we currently don't have anyone)
At RW Nolito, Bellerabi, (we're obviously already looking at Mane), Feghouli to name a few (I believe they are all better than Young, so when/if we get our Galactico RW in the summer they can replace Young in the squad)

I can see both Shaw and Rodriguez working together on the left flank. Rodriguez offers a lot going forward so probably he can be transformed in more attacking position ala Bale.

@Enigma_87
I don't think that would work and also don't think that's Ricci's aim if I recall an interview with him correctly from last summer. That doesn't mean he wouldn't join United in the summer but if so as a LB starter. Although I still reckon he'll end up in La Liga after the Euro.
