Why do you need Makelele when you already have the combo of Keane and Vieira? It is just overkill, you just need two. If it is Keane and Vieira, you can play two man MF if Makelele is in then perhaps get an AM

I don't think Kaka would have been such an obvious upgrade to be fair. Very different from Rui Costa but I'd not say better.

He would fetch more votes, NQAT. I have no idea why people have not clocked it yet that Costa is not that highly rated rightly or wrongly.

Never bothered too much about that aspect of the game but could very well be true. Personally I rate Rui Costa above Kaka skill-wise, even if Kaka would have been an easier fit in the team he is going for.

So I'd not be able to call either choice good or worse, more a preference of which style he wants to play.

Like Del Piero, he peaked in the 90s. I was actually mulling over this the other day with the whole regen thing... Stacks of quality #10s that retired or went into decline in the second half of the 90s: Maradona, Francescoli, Laudrup, Hagi, Stoichkov, Savicevic, Baggio, Cantona, Le Tissier...

Hard for Rui Costa's peak to be as memorable in their midst. No one replaced them really and it was in that vacuum that Zidane, Rivaldo, Ronaldinho, then Kaka captured the imagination. They were pretty unique in a decade devoid of players of a similar standard. Then the two freaks of nature arrived.

All this high-press stuff with everyone required to put in a shift is actually eradicating or leaving no room for the good old genius guy upfront who couldn't be arsed that much. Funny enough, Guardiola was among the first to denounce it admitting his stamina and workrate weren't up to the rhythm of the "modern game" (early 00s as opposed to 90s).

Shame really.

12 hrs it is then, all bids , new or raised from 0800 hrs BST follow 12 hr clock
Bids that came in before then will expire upon their 24 hr expiry or at 2000 hrs BST whichever is earlier
