So Chelsea sign a 24 year old defender from the Championship and send him back on loan? What is that about?

Young as well, failing that Martial.

And who will cover for Rooney?

Seriously we lack numbers while top quality players who could cover that role are either on loan or sold for next to nothing

Jim White needs to feck off. He's actually a nice bloke but still

Don't know why people keep saying he's not a winger, anyway it looked like Young will deputise after his cameo at Swansea.

He doesn't provide any width. He just cuts inside constantly. He's a 10 spends a bit of time on the wing

Martial as well, failing that Wilson.

---------Rooney----------
Memphis - Herrera - Mata

---------Wilson----------
Martial - Fellaini - Young

Throw in Periera and Lingard and we do have options. We have enough numbers, that's not the problem, it's quality.

Why was there so much inactivity this deadline day?

Just a couple years ago it was fans flocked outside every stadium and 2/3 huge transfers expected to happen. Late twists etc.

This one was very quiet and boring. Is there an actual reason?
Only UK window open and 6pm
Wait till next summer if it's not a bank holiday... Full on Muppet meltdowns till midnight

That's not how things work doesn't it? Fatigue will kick in, 2-3 players will pick injuries which will take time to cure and in the most inconvenient times. Can you imagine if Rooney and Memphis pick an injury prior to an important game against lets say Barcelona? Should we be forced to depend on the unproven talent of Wilson especially since we've got a quality winger in Januzaj whose currently rotting at Dortmund?

I'm just sat here watching SSN whilst that repeat the same questions over and over again to Henry and Redknapp

Not the greatest Deadline Day, but there's been worse.

I wouldn't consider Janzuaj a quality winger but in that scenario you've put forward we've lost arguably our 2 best attacking players and would probably field:

--------Martial---------
Young - Herrera - Mata

I agree that's not good enough to play Barcelona but if I take the 2 biggest attackers out of the other teams in the league how many are better?

---------Falcao---------
Pedro - Oscar - Willian

------Walcott------
Ox - Ramsey - Ozil

They don't inspire much fear either, the only ones who can handle it are City with their abundance of riches in attack. I'm not disagreeing with you, our attack isn't up to scratch, I'm just saying we have enough bodies to cover injuries at least..

Why is everyone so upset over Januzaj? It's just a loan isn't it? Will only do him good.

So we let Januzaj go on loan and we sell Nani for peanuts so we can play Periera as Mata's cover? That's a lot to process

I'm not saying that's the plan. Just that I would like to see him there, because he won't play on the left while Memphis is here, and I doubt he'll get many chances as a 10. He was really good on tour imo.

Hopefully! This hasn't felt like a deadline day at all. I feel like a kid who missed Christmas.

It has got kinda lost in all the madness but it's just mind boggling and we are a few inevitable injuries away from regretting it.

We are exactly one injury to smalling away from losing out on the champions league again next season.

We're upset because he's good enough to compete for a first team place with us NOW and we will need him soon enough

I just think it is odd he went to Dortmund. Would be pretty happy if he was definitely going to start but he will be on the bench unless they pick up an injury or two. I think our squad coverage is probably ok with Martial and Wilson backing up Rooney up top and Fellaini, Young, Lingard and Pereira backing up Mata and Memphis. You do wonder if things would be different if we had an injury or two though and we will surely get them.

A key point that the club clearly sees is that young players need regular football at a decent standard to develop and the under 21 league simply does not provide that. With a single striker system that is why we might still contemplate a champo loan with a recall clause for Wilson and it could be really good for him. Kane for example made strides on loan. Need that recall clause though.

LVG preached about having 2 quality players to compete for every role. We dont have that

Perhaps he thinks he does
Rooney... Wilson
Depay... Young
Mata... Martial
Fellaini... Periera
Schneiderlin... Herrera
Carrick... Schweinsteiger
Smalling... Jones
Blind... McNair
Shaw... Rojo
Darmain... Valencia
De gea... Romero

Not saying I think it's great But if he has faith in the youngsters then you can argue he has two in each role covered

We have 2 players for every position, its whether you agree they're quality or not thats the problem.

Exactly. Time will tell. Devilish spent years slagging off some of our most successful squad players in our most successful period of history so his judgement is not the best.

Yes, plus plenty of cover at keeper, Lingard, who I think is very handy, Goss, who could play in the league cup, and then the likes of Varela and Powell who could still get their careers back on track potentially. Then some other promising youngsters like Harrop, Fosu Mensah, Mitchell etc.

The squad is actually at a more sensible size now. Look at the backups Chelsea held last year - they barely played more than 18 players. We do need to keep our key men fit but the same is true for most clubs.

What I used to say is that Welbeck, Cleverley, Rafael and co weren't good enough to succeed the likes of Scholes, Gaz, Giggs and co. Under such circumstances, once they retired in masse the team will collapse and we'll be in some serious trouble. We all know how that ended
