Top 4 van Gaal stays or no top 4 van Gaal leaves?

would like to hear the story about Rashford being played so quick. I mean someone must have said. yeah the boy is ready. what a gem we have on our hands. Please dont screw this up. sign the lad up to a top contract.
Rashford has been great, but LvG's record overall with new players is currently behind the curve. Ally that fact with the reality that we're doing worse than last season and you can't deny that the manager is underperforming against his own low standards, let alone the standards expected of a Manchester United manager.

Despite my reservations about José, Giggs etc, I'd even take one of those two over LVG, mate - I pretty much have to force myself to watch United games these days. The cumulative effect of Moyes and van Gaal has put me off the sport in general.

with Fergie we knew how we would come out and play. With van Gaal it is a matter how low we should set our expectations.

that Villa match was darn painful. And those last few minutes. I mean Villa really should have got a point. Mess.

I have not watched tonights match....but some saying we were ok? the Darmain goal looks worth the admission.

palace had absolutely nothing, it was like a training match

Van gaal should go no matter what happens between now and the rest of the season. Even if we win the FA Cup and squeeze top 4, it still doesn't mask the fact his reign has been a complete disaster for 95%+ of his time here.

I can't remember how top four became this year's target. Whether we get it or not, the fact that top four is what we are chasing is the biggest indicator that he has not lived up to the expectations, not even the expectations he set at the beginning of the season. Last year, i was content with fourth, this year the target was supposed to be challenging for the title.

I don't trust the board to make a sensible decision, but the one thing we all know is that they know money, and not winning titles will cost them.

painful you mean.

He has taken all the joy out of watching football for me.
How SAF, Woodward and the rest of the board can be viewing this mediocrity from the stands every week and think its ok is beyond me.

No other top tier team would put up with this nonsense.

The decision (whatever it is) would have been made a long time ago. Whether it's Mourinho or someone else I don't know, but Van Gaal isn't gonna be there next season. The kind of loyalty that would keep him in the job could be expected of Ferguson, not Woodward. It's therefore absurd to wish your team would lose because of this fatuous false dichotomy that everyone seems to be taking as a given. While we are wildly speculating, it's just as plausible that Mourinho is waiting to see if we qualify for the champions league to accept the job, or that Van Gaal gets the boot even if we do (in the unlikely event that we haven't acted already).

i appreciate your sentiment, but the fact that lvg wasn't booted already in december/january shows me that he's going nowhere. especially with our upturn in results of late (modest results, i know), i'm now resigned to united keeping him on for next season.

nothing like having a lame ass lame duck of a manager going into a recruitment period... who'd sign for us, especially if we don't have champions league to offer?

Exactly, we are already way behind where we should be in both performance AND results. Scraping fourth does not save LvG.

I am honestly shocked at the number of people effectively preferring United to fail rather than succeed. I get that nobody is a fan of LVG, and I get that his style of football is crap, but still. How can you honestly not want United to be in the CL next season?

It's an attitude that baffles me.

Short term pain for long term gain.

I would honestly prefer us to miss out on the CL if it means van Gaal is out and Mourinho comes in.

I am completely fed up with the deluded old prick, and simply cannot take another season of him.

Because they've convinced themselves of this false dichotomy that this thread title encapsulates.

Key point for me. When we were on the way up/permanently successful, players were ready to come to us ..... now we're outside CL places, harder to get players that improve the team (CH, MF, Winger) AND harder to retain the top ones we've got (De Gea). Got to get CL or pay through the nose....

We signed Di Maria and Falcao when we were not in the Champions League.

What does the bolded part even mean? If LVG is still here next year, what will you do - do you bugger off and either follow another team or not bother with United at all for a season, or do you just put up and shut up and maybe have a bit more of a moan on here?

While your sensitivities are noted, United finishing in the CL spots is factually better than us not finishing there. That is a factual statement, unless you take it from a non-United supporter point of view.

The whole 'short term pain for long term gain' idea is ridiculous. If United fail to make the CL spots for the second time in three seasons, there is no guarantee of any long term gain. The long term gain to be realised here is staying in the CL until summer 2017 when LVG leaves - therefore taking short term pain (LVG) in favour of long term gain (protecting United's status as a top club. This may make too much sense though.

Totally agree, anyway he's gone, so doesn't matter. Decision's been made and is obvious.
Make top 4, win the FA Cup and he can retire a happy man and we can all look forward to better football and CL if we can possibly make it.

Eh they turned out shite subsequently, but they were both high profiling signings made when we were outside of the Champions League.

We beat both City and Real to Falcao if memory serves.

Nope... City were asked and said "ta, we're full" and the Real rumours were started by Falcao himself by 'accidentally' tweeting "halamadrid". Last second signing, desperation and lots of rumours about injury issues (Di Maria I'll give you and (as said) we paid through the nose?)

Nah City were definitely keen, it was pretty much considered a down deal until we came in. I concede the point on Madrid though.

I gave it a long thought and I think you're right. It's killing us, sucking out all the joy from watching football and setting both camps at variance. Good post this.
