Top 4 race 2016/17

It's still difficult, you've had your easier half of the season and have City, Arsenal, Spurs, Southampton, Leicester, West Ham, Stoke away in the second half of the season while being probably 4 points or more off the pace coming into it.

Not impossible though and the first 1/3 of the season isn't enough time to write a team off.
Easier half of the season? I've never heard that being put forward before.
Anyway, we completly dominated all those teams bar City so I wouldn't be too worried about those fixtures. We'll get our fair share.

Ironically enough the Arsenal fan is ignoring that his team also have to go to half of those teams and then have games away to Liverpool and Chelsea to contend with

I don't know why people keep mentioning Everton like they've got a chance of getting anything vs Liverpool. Arsenal City is a good game because someone drops poins.
You serious? Everton could easily win especially at home.

Easily? They've won something like 4 derbies of the last 36. Haven't beaten Liverpool in 6 years when Roy Hodgson was manager. Obviously they can win, but 'easily'?

Having drawn with us and beaten Arsenal I'd be disappointed if Everton don't get something out of the game against Liverpool

I didn't mean "easily" as in they'll batter them, I meant "easily" in the sense they could definitely win under the floodlights at Goodison on a Monday night.

I don't care about their record against Liverpool being managed by a coward like Moyes & the inept Martinez. Koeman will set his side up to win no doubt, they just have to play with the same intensity as they did against Arsenal after they went behind. Lukaku & co will definitely fancy their chances against that defence of theirs.

I'm sure Klopp will set up to take advantage of Everton's equally weak defence (both conceded 20) but he's got better players all over the park, especially in attack.

Still feel we've given ourselves too much to do and regardless of how well we play we're relying on two teams to pretty much fall away (Spurs who are above us at the moment and then one of the teams actually in the top 4)
At least now, or after tomorrow at least, top four will be one game from being in our own hands. Two weeks ago we were praying.

Everton mightn't be able to beat Liverpool but hasn't it been a while since Liverpool last won at Goodison?

I saw your post, and i don't fully agree with the fact that we had an easier half of the season than the other teams above us.

I calculated the average position of teams still to play for each one of the top 6 and more importantly, the number of teams from the TOP 6 still to play at home and away.

Edit: i put some HTML code to have these stats as a table but it didn't seem to work, and since i can't post images yet, here's the stats as text:

Chelsea:
Ave. Position of home oppo: 12.45
Ave. Position of away oppo: 10
Team in Top 6 still to play at home: 2
Team in Top 6 still to play away: 3

Liverpool:
Ave. Position of home oppo: 9.18

Sorry, but what you said makes no sense. This run of games had nothing with not playing Europa League. After match with Zorya we had Tottenham over the weekend, Palace as mid week game and WBA today. Three games in 6 days.

Tottenham we could have easily drawn that match caught them on an off day plus there is no long travelling involved when playing 3 games in six days in the premier league

So Arsenal actually has the "hardest" second half of the season to come. Adding to that the fact that we've got momentum and his estimate of "probably being 4 points or more off the pace" can be changed to "being 4 points behind at the most, but likely just a point or two off" I'm feeling pretty good about our chances to contend for a top four spot as it stands.

I didn't see us getting ourselves here again this season, but with us having finally found something that resembles some momentum, anything can happen. We just need to capitalise on our current run, and we should find ourselves going into the new year with close to no gap, and top four being very much within our own hands.

Feel we need 6 points out of 6 in our next two fixtures before we start getting carried away, against Spurs we got past the conceding late and loosing leads, against Palace we got past loosing a lead but scoring again late to win, next thing to get past is playing at home against sides who will put 11 behind the ball and win comfortably

The probable return of Mkhitaryan will do much to sort that out, IMO

A rather glib truism given that pretty much anybody can beat anybody in this league.

Going on these fixtures I imagine we'll be 3 behind City but level with Spurs.

Revised my predictions hopefully tomorrow will see City/Arse, Spurs/Burnley and Monday Everton/Liverpool at best draw.

I think Everton will beat Liverpool
Hope so.

This is one of those tricky away fixtures where we have to hope the sides above us drop points.

City and Arse today means one has to drop points. Liverpool v chelsea on new years eve is another. We have 2 very winnable home games so hopefully we can make some ground up.

I can't see Burnley getting anything from Spurs though.

Its good that we're looking like picking up consistency. Feel like we wont quite make it though. Chelsea might run away with the title, while them and liverpool only have the league to worry about so will stay relatively consistent I feel. Arsenal are looking more resilient in terms of grinding out points and face an early exit from CL as well. City are probably our biggest hope to fall out the top 4, but its hard to see that tbh. Quality wise, I dont think we are any worse then anyone in the league. If we had no europa league then I feel like we probably would get it. But problem is, europa league will return in february and I would be surprised if we dont go very far, and its a great chance to win a big cup which also qualifies us for CL. So why not? Our league form will likely suffer from it, but thats not a reason to rule it out.

The match against St Etienne will be on the weekends of the EFL Cup final (if we reach it) and FA Cup 4th round, so our league form will remain unaffected at least until March. Should hopefully mean we can get a good run of form up to then and a sizeable and healthy lead over 5th.

Can't see Liverpool falling out of top 4 tbh. They don't have Europe and it is Klopps second season.

Easily? They've won something like 4 derbies of the last 36. Haven't beaten Liverpool in 6 years when Roy Hodgson was manager. Obviously they can win, but 'easily'?
Doesn't really make a difference, apart from the psychological maybe.

My first post in the main forums. Well my name PepG suggests that i am big fan of Pep Guardiola and thats why i fancy City in England but i sort of expected at the beginning of the season that both Pep and Jose will have transitional year and their real battle for the title will be next season. I didn't expect that both will struggle so much and so long with their respective clubs but that's the reality in the Premier League.

It seems in the recent games that Mourinho is finally finding the right formula for his team, so i think that United will finish in Top 4 comfortably. I think that is about to happen at City too, so 3-4 place finish for both Manchester clubs at the end of the season is my prediction here.

If Arsenal draw tonight and Liverpool lose, I think the league becomes a scrap for positions 2-4 with Chelsea running away with it. I think that's ideal for us, and then anything can happen.

Oh no, not another one.:)

Joking aside, I agree that next year we will see a proper battle between Pep and Mourinho given that Peps style works. Personally, I think Pep is overrated and will never last in England.

Just seen we're only 4 points of 2nd. Anyone reckon we could win the league?:)

Hope they didn't give everything they had against us. It usually happens like this ;) :p
It can do, very often with smaller teams you'll see them give everything against one of the big boys then lose a few days later to Stoke

But I think Everton have genuine quality through their team, a manager who knows how to get a team playing well and unless Everton have a particularly bad day, I think they'll cause Liverpool more than a few problems. Lukaku up against that Liverpool defense in particular will be interesting
